I heard somewhere that when the air on a classic at 70 into a 30 - 40mph head wind it the front of the car and as it went up over the bonnet didn`t go over that cleanly and close to the bonnet creating a huge low pressure point obove the bonnet where there was a big hole in the air , so no air going into the scoop, and also making the front end go light. So maybe they redesigned the front of the new cars so that the air goes into the scoop. The front of my bug seems pretty well planted into large headwinds aswell, so maybe this is another side effect of the redesigned bonnet profile.

was this gap in the rubber seal left like this by the manufacturer for a reason, will closing it up cause any damage or a massive build up of pressure?!
I think that the mirror/door seal noise issues are unrelated to my noise.
My noise is deffo being caused by an excess amount of air being 'scooped' by the scoop and escaping other trhan was intended.

I get the same sort of odd whistling noise in my MY05 WRX at around 100, seems to be coming from the passenger side. Next time I'm up at that speed I'll try using the wipers, and will try to remember to fold in the wing mirror.
