Educated voting - as standard!!
The richer a nation is the more apathetic voters you get.
For those that do vote the main problem is the lack of information you get about any party's policy through the media. Most of it is reporters commenting on how the electorate will react to everything. We are the electorate, why are they telling us how we'll react? But maybe people find policy too boring and they're only getting what they deserve...I don't know.....this is argument is going nowhere..so I'll stop here...lol

I vote according to my political leaning. I am conservative and will always vote as such. Manifesto is a fancy way of getting the vote. Government isn't accountable for their manifeto's failings as they say "things changed" or "we didn't say that" etc etc.
Vote in accordance with your fundamental beliefs in my opinion.
....or cos you like Blairs shoes.

It would be interesting to do an experiment on the public masses like the following:
A vote, like any other but with a difference - Instead of candidates and parties being listing on the ballot paper - the policies and adenda being listed instead. Then the person has to vote to which the agree or like the most - not knowing which person or party they are voting for!
Rules out the need for testing etc...stupid people won't be able read it anyway!
Although would be widely open to spin and PR tactics.
I wonder what the result would be?

party 1 says they will put in £1Billion towards education next year, tick here ....
party 2 says they will put in £2billion towards education next year, tick here....
so we are all obviously going to tick the box for party 2 but we might disagree with the fact they will put up petrol to fund it, all parties have different priorities and 1 good thing might mean we have to put up with 2 or 3 bad things, its all relative. both the tories and labour are pretty much similar, 1 might say they can improve the services if we vote for them but we'll all have to pay for it in another way.

thats my opinion anyhow, its always going to be that way until we get some greatly opposing ideas from 2 different parties.

We are almost in another concensus of politics, much like post-war. Politicians are too scared to be anything other then a moderate liberal. Reason?? You gain votes somewhere, and lose them somewhere else.
Gone are the days of politicians that say what they feel instead of towing the line to try and keep everyone happy.
Any party that says anything other than the so-called norm is seen as "extreme", thus not viable.
They're all wimps basically.

I like Howard's attitude of back to traditional Conservatism though. Whether you are left or right wing, you have to respect it. Atleast he is standing up for what he and his party believe in fundamentally instead of lying to get votes.
Though, I may be wrong?

He's a very clever man. In some ways a good thing, in others, bad.
God, you lot of poofs
I was looking in here again, after a hard days work (ahem), expecting there to be dismembered bodies lying on the floor, and what do I see?! Something that almost looks like an agreement
This is not the scoobynet way, we must continue arguing until the thread gets locked!

I think the most significant difference between the main parties is their attitude towards Eu confederation and the latest Eu constitution.
I don't wish to list the preferences of the parties, pretty obvious anyway. You have to decide whether you support the idea of confederation with the Eu and everything that goes with that, or whether you still wish to have a personal say in how your future life will be controlled. If you lose the power of your vote, then kiss freedom goodbye.
I believe that to be the most important question for the future and they way we vote will dictate the overall result with respect to that.
I hold that voting is a personal duty in a democracy, no excuse to cop out of that. Who has the right to vote is a vastly different question. It is extremely important that people vote for the right reasons as SAP says. Maybe some form of education at a young age is one way. If Politicians were honest just for once and described their policies truthfully with exactly how they would affect us in a way we can all understand, instead of all the half truths which reveal something very different after they are elected, then that might be a good start at least.
