Cheers guys.

I was on my lunch break ******. And i'm offshift now.

Sam, i'm glad you are happy with the adaptors and also your car. Be sure to post your RR result. That's two rounds of good feedback from two sets of adaptor kits now so i must be doing something right. Paul's gotten in touch with his own valuable feedback as well.

hey all,

carl, well done for some top posting in this topic! they are some of the best post i've read on a car forum.

i've signed up here as i'm going to stick a scooby lump in a project alfa romeo just for a challange but i also own a pulsar. before the fmic there is a good way to help keep the heat soak at bay with the dreded interwarmer on top.

get some 1mm alu sheet and make a plate to fit under the IC. dont mount it too close or it prevents good air flow. this mod is a bit easier on the pulsar's inline 4 engine but i see no reason why you couldnt do it to the flat 4 too. just an idea and maybe worth a try. plus it'll only cost about 8quid for a sheet big enough for the job.

good luck with your project and i hope you do crack 300 soon.

Luke.

Hi Luke. I'm gearing myself up for having another go at the car come January/February. I like what you're saying about channeling a smoother path for the air exiting underneath the TMIC.

I'll be ordering my thermocouple soon so that will let me get my charge temp gauge installed. Then i have a few items to manufacture from sheet ally that will hopefully drop the temps. I will be experimenting with your idea also.

Shielding the filter is off the cards now, i have (a slightly more expensive) but better plan. I'm hoping to be able to test everything (including STi TMIC + tilt kit) back to back on the same day using the charge temp gauge to see what really works and what doesn't.

we have managed a good 314bhp out of a 98 scoob UK with out a a lot of money spent
and did this with tec 3 and some other bits a pieces i.e
VF24
Walbro pump
reg
full decat
green filter
2002 wrx ic
apart from that std ...
we were well happy with the results and no big spending on boost controlers and so on.

no big spending on boost controllers is because the TEK3 utilises the oem stuff doesnt it?
but you need (or rather should) fit a 3 port solenoid shouldnt you?

good figures btw

What about the risk to the head gaskets as these are the composite type and not steel like in the MY99 engine IIRC?? Was it also on the std 380cc injectors too??

The reason i ask is i have an MY98 uk turbo with boost controller (1.27 bar), full HKS decat and induction kit currentlly running 280 bhp, was looking for some more power but also want reliability as a daily driver

Graham, the 'next stages' will cost me no more than £150 all-in. Well maybe £180-ish including the header gaskets. The bulk of the rest of this cost being taken up by the charge temp gauge and the APS CAK i've bought. Neither of these i really need but i want to be able to see just how effective the charge temp mods are and really don't fancy my chances of making a good job of the filter shielding.

My fancy boost controller cost me nowt. Not sure i would have bought one if i was going to be paying +-£260. I must actually plug Jamie @ H1 Performance.

Dad will be supplying the sheet ally which will let me get the other bits and pieces made and i have absolutely no plans to upgrade the intercooler or turbo.

Chris, i wasn't aware TEK3 was available for MY98? It wasn't run at Well Lane also was it?

Awkward plastic clips that don't want to be disturbed.....
Are you going to make the inner wing splash guard more readily removeable? When I 'de-resonated' my Sti the clips holding the guards together looked like they would not tolerate being repeatedly removed.
Thought the APS kit came with a K&N cone?

The kit did come with a cone Graham but it is erm, well used...

I'll be buying brand new clips from Subaru as i broke most of mine during Round 1 and previous.

Previous guy ran with the splash panel off?
Will look forward to seeing if you feel the APS is a move forward over a stock panel filter with resonator removed.
Have you found the bhp/lbft you are 'missing' yet?
I hope to have caught you up in about a month's time.

Graham, i hope to see any differance on the CT gauge as well as feel the change. I'll need the map tweaked anyway which will coincide with setting up the AVC-R and the other minor cooling mods.

Grant, the only thing i've done to the car is get it filthy and stick the 16's on for winter. Been a bit preoccupied with a sick Mum, work and injector collars since the power run.

As for the APS filter... it looks as though it's been run-over rather than run without splash guards.

Carl, you do know not to give it boost on the new APS cold air induction until it is either mapped or you add at least 25% fuel !! ?

Aye don't worry Andy, it won't be getting fitted properly until the day before i come down to see you.

Dad got me a dremel-type tool for my birthday, should come in handy for the headers.

EDIT

Merry christmas by the way everyone.

If you are going to port the stock cast headers you will need a lot of Dremmel bits + a lot of time.
I used a vicious die grinder at work with a bas@ard of a cutting burr and blasted the job in 60 mins but it sure made a lot of swarf!
Must admit to not noticing a lot of difference for all the effort (is 60 mins a lot of work?) but spool point was better by a few 100 rpm.

Merry Xmas to you too, enjoyed your thread a lot.

Hope you all had a great Xmas.
As for porting headers, I don't know whats the acceptable time but Harvey Smith did a lovely job on mine,

I have some headers already ported, much more then you could ever do with a mere Dremel. £40 inc postage to anyone that wants them.

you wont regret that Carl, the stock headers (after a liberal grinding) make for a lovely punchy feel in the mid range, I think Im now heading over to tubular designed equal lengthers, alas I feel the power band could be moving a little up the range but hoping for a bigger gain when it gets there!

I had what you said a while ago in mind Andy. After stumbling over this thread i'm going to try and get an up-pipe taken care of aswell as wrap headers/up-pipe/down-pipe. If it made that much of a difference to Rich's car for <£100 it has to be worth a shot!

Spent far too long last night searching for the best price on some wrap.

Oh, thermocouple arrived as well.

Carl: I've had wrap from Agriemach and from Proven Products recently. Agrie is about 1.5 x more costly.
There is a big difference between the two, and i would say the Agrie wrap is the better (denser weave).
What a boring job. Told last night that ceramic coating is far better!
