Yeah, what's wrong with that? That's what I do most of the time, at least when I have a deal on, though I don't do Bank Holidays and only a bit at weekends.

You're serious? Who d'you think's paying for you to "chill and think about what I want"? And if you're getting stressed at 21, just wait until you have real responsibilities, when you have a significant number of people working for you..

If they've asked you to work 14 hour days, tell the boss to bugger off - they can't make you do it. But if the job is something that you just take 14 hours over, then as you say, you've bitten off more than you can chew, and you should change job, simple as that.

I work long hours because I enjoy my job, I enjoy the pay, and I'm pushing the share price up. If it goes well, the options will mean I can finish work early, which will be nice. But I knew the job and what it entailed; if I couldn't hack it, I'd not dream of claiming stress.

Sounds like somebody has no life outside of work.

Sure if you love your job that much..work every hour god sends you. Just don't come crying when the rest of your world falls apart. You kids retalliate for a lack of a parental figure who is always at work, a wife who has a bit on the side through being so lonely. All income and all you can do is spend it on material poessesion.

If you like it fine. However...if you have a boss that expects you to work every hour under the sun, when your work contract only states normal work hours (9 'til 5, 5 days). And you don't want to, but literrally forced because your "letting the team, down", threats of deadlines, lost contracts, loss of jobs due to that. It's somehow my fault that I am not willing to make up on my bosses shortcommings. I spent far too long "towing the line", before literally losing the plot before realising it's his problem, not mine.

Oh to answer the original topic question....sounds like he doesn't like Mondays. If you think he's such a good worker and worth keeping on - cut his sick pay and let him have his monday off. See where that leaves him

You'll note that I said "when I have a deal on". This isn't all of the time, but when it's happening, then I certainly don't have a life outside of work. Having said all that, it's periods of intense activity (4-6 weeks) followed by at least as long of normal (8-7) days.

That's all very well; but you can bet your life a junior exec wage isn't even half of what you are on. I don't own a house and I don't have many material possessions I can call my own (well compared to most people on here). When you are putting your all into something and getting nothing/****e salary in return to show for it, it's a bit disheartening!!

I am stepping back and going to stop going the extra mile. I used to spend a bit of time on sn in the day at work; but i stopped that a while ago. It's not as if I am sat doing nothing, I took on too much work - that's my fault. But for people to expect that all the time just isn't fair.

It's not just work - there are underlying matters that affect everything. As Ali said, there is a life outside of work.

I hate my current job, in IT, thats why im looking to get out. I am seriously getting involved in something I enjoy that will provide a decent income, and yes, seriously, it is to do with adult film distribution.

It dawned on me after I had a few days off how much I truely hate my job. I believe alcoholics refer to it as a moment of clarity. I started worrying saturday morning that I was back in work on Monday. I realised how much I detest the place and its making me miserable

The job is not good because my boss treats me like a skivvy, even though I am 100% more knowledgable on our systems than he is and prevents me from learning on the job so he can try and keep my wages down. Id get up miserable, go home miserable, and go to bed miserable. Its no way to live. Other problem is the market is flooded with wannabe IT pros that rates elsewhere are just stupid. I've seen second line at £6. FFS Its almost that much for tesco part timers

Now I come in and hate every single sodding god forsaken minute in this place. TBH I would never be rich doing what im doing, or even moderatly well off either so I decided to get my **** together and work for myself doing a) something I enjoy and b) something where I can work my own hours and profit from myself rather that work for these plebs that just scream at IT "My feckin PC aint workin, fix it now".

So find the job you want and move. Stress at work (assuming that's the root cause of most of your problems) can vanish with a change of scenery. I know, I used to suffer from it myself, though physically rather than mentally.

Life's way too short to be doing a job if you don't like it. And assuming you can't find a perfect job (who can - it's still work after all), then find the one you dislike the least and do that.

....but finding the right one is such a pain in the ****. Are all employers the same these day?

It's starting to appear so

I am reading the other threads for inspiration

Seems as though a lot of people aren't/weren't happy with their job.

I am planning on doing a trade next year so it will be worth sticking this one out. Either that or go it alone.

I am starting a small sideline at the moment. I am currently the legs/**** for Joey D's (up and coming designer in Edinburgh, very funky) flyer campaign at the moment for jeans (Joey D wants your jeans - he recycles them and makes some amazing stuff and because he is in such high demabd he wants peoples old ones!!). I done it for free but thinking of going into it part time/take the work when I can get it.

Just because someones only 21 doesn't mean they don't have real responsibilities! In my old job out of an office of 4 I was the only one to work full time and got landed with all the work plus supporting 5 QS's and 3 Planning Engineers and doing menial ****e they couldn't be arsed doing. Comments like 'get the young one to do it!!' don't exactly make you feel appreciated but used!! I have plenty of responsibilty in & out of work, I think your generalisation of young people is a bit unfair.

In the FTSE 100 company I work in he would be 'managed out of the business'. There is a defined and fair sickness policy, 3 instances or more than 10 days in any rolling 12 month period and you're on a verbal warning at managers discretion (and he would be), one more occasion in the subsequent 6 months and a written, one more in the next 3 and a final written, one more ya gone bye bye.

So every Monday for a 6 weeks and he'd become a government statistic

UNLESS there is a genuine underlying medical reason which would be discussed in his first return to work interview and passed to the Occupational Health Service to deal with and provide recommendations to top brass like me ...

In short - every Monday is a key P155 take day to have off - i'd have him out of my business in no time - coz Im well 'ard .

Most young professionals don't have huge responsibilities, because they're just out of college and have the management ability of a pile of leaves. Clearly this doesn't always apply, but it certainly did in my case.
