JB: Not to score points but to reiterate and perhaps assist you. When I have been at Star there have been traction problems necessitating passengers to load the car down just like everywhere else and Jim is the only RR operator of all those I have met that keeps belt dressing to aid traction.
As I have already tried to explain, my STi has never run straight Optimax from the day I got it well prior to any mods. The SUL map as it was known was based on Optimax and 1ml per litre NF. For a rolling road day I would add 2mls per litre for safety but not for any performance advantage and nothing was done to the SUL map. The 533 bhp result was on this map and fuel. The second map was for 102 RON race fuel and there was a noticable performance improvement. As I think I already explained to you the car felt far eager to pull away from T junctions in second gear and it was noticable through the seat of your pants in other areas. The 585 bhp 464 ft.lbs result was achieved on that fuel but there had been several other alterations and remapping of the previous race fuel map to achieve that result. Like I said, I do not put great store in the Prosport torque figure of 499 ft.lbs but that was on the same fuel again and with the time lapse there had been more mapping including Bruntingthorpe.
I have supplied this same fuel to several other Scooby enthusiasts.
One thing I do wonder about is why you ran the Ion turbo with a TD04 wastegate actuator ? I would not have thought that was condusive to getting best results from the Ion.
These comments are intended to be helpful and I did feel sorry that your choice of turbos, gearset and engine(s) had caused you so much trouble.

John H :
your own expert says well lane reads higher. get over it.
By definition an 'expert' is someone highly trained and informed in a specialist skill. I would consider my rolling road experts are Mervyn at Power Engineering, Barry at Well Lane, and Gerry Gaffney at Dastek. In fact I believe Barry has attended courses at Dastek but I have never heard any of them suggest the accuracy at Well Lane was other than acceptable.
I did rip the centre out of an AP Organic uprated and in part that was because it was operating well beyond published design parameters. I replaced it with exactly the same as I was impressed with its ability. This happened at Bruntingthorpe where you certainly don't drive like a ***** if you want to exceed 180 mph but it has little relevance to mechanical sympathy off the start line which is irrelevant at that venue.
Thanks for your good wishes with the new engine.

Maddog : Will some of us get the opportunity to meet you at the forthcoming rolling road day ?

Thanks Harvey. Agree on the points scoring. It says a lot about the integrity of your bottom end that you can do the stuff with the race fuel. Andy wonders if the cylinder pressure profiles are smoother, so it may be a head gasket saviour, I don't know. The 2.5s in the US running big turbos and publishing results are generally running this and seem to be holding together, on the other hand I don't know how many of them do the top end work that some Euro cars get, and that is where I've had the trouble with gaskets, jousting with Porsches both times, not embarrassed to admit the first one was "only" a Cayenne Turbo Whatever, there is a lot of work to do on the big capacity engines to get the reliability that you've had.

Just info and feelings on the actuator... not to be confrontational, hope this is of interest (although maybe not the right thread, sorry guys). The actuator was switched because the minimum boost I could run was about 1.5 bar in the midrange in a high gear when the car was exercised and things got hot. This was a 1.2 bar rated actuator, and it dropped down at the top to near this. I think this would be ace for a 2.0. For the 2.5 it produces torque that is tremendous fun at 1.5 bar if it is dry, in the wet the lower three gears become pointless. Considering it hit 1.5 bar in the middle of summer, by now I think it would be a 2.5 gasket busting 1.6 bar. Until there is a solution to this (and if there is I will fit better pistons and go for it), and to maintain reliability I am usually only running at 1.25 kg/m2, with an occasional 1.4 kg/m2 setting which I rarely have need to use. It sounds tame, but it doesn't feel it - this gives surprisingly good torque delivery and makes a nice road car that can run my 15-20000 miles a year I think without too much worry on straight Optimax, as long as I don't go chasing silliness again on an engine that isn't up to it. The spool up is identical with both actuators using the AVC-R, when I last checked about 2750-2800 RPM for 1 bar in top gear without using the brakes about 100 RPM later in 5th gear - AVC-R and heat wrapping did help, so the balance is like a well sorted VF28 on a 2.0. Target boost can hold all the way to the top, and can go beyond the point where it starts to level off in power without using additives. It also allows a lower boost setting of 1.0 bar if I want it, which might be handy in winter - can't go lower because on the 0.5 bar actuator it creeps to 1.0 at the top. No problem in this really, can't expect the internal WG of the P20 housing to flow enough from a 2.5 away from the turbine wheel, 20G couldn't either. I think the P450 is a reasonable choice for a standard internals EJ257 with a weaker actuator, just the upgrade from the 20G isn't quite as much as I might have expected, even when I did run more boost. The 20G in particular is great on the 2.5 because it has no surge issues and there is virtually never any lag to notice, I don't think I go any quicker except for pure top end stuff running the same fuel overall. Under load I don't find most Scooby engines like to be below 2000 RPM, but the 20G was already producing considerable boost down there. Always difficult knowing how much of that to trade for stuff up top. I still honestly don't know which I prefer, depends on mood and usage. T-uk in some ways thought it was more balanced on the iON and thought the 20G got through the gears too quickly - especially with 7000 RPM limit and low profile tyres with the massive low down torque, the iON is more linear with a higher rev limit and taller tyres, not quite so manic always grabbing the next gear. Thankyou for your help in selecting it, apologies for being too oppositional on occasion, I can get dug in in argument like all of us can, and it gets us nowhere. We each want to go fast, we have our own slants on it, but you do a better job of it than me.

Sorry Harvey, won't be at Well Lane meet.
It's pretty rare for me to be able to go to these kind of things, that's why i'm quite happy to browse throught the net on things that interest me.
Enjoy your day though and to everyone else. Hope you all get what you are hoping for.

I'll put the list up early next week.

To the newbies:

Don't let all this serious banter put you off, these really are fun days and you can meet lots of fellow enthusiasts and maybe even make some new friends. I have met many really nice guys through organising these days whom I would probably never have met otherwise.

Anyone is welcome to attend as spectators and no one should feel intimidated or that "they are not worthy" even the big boys started somewhere.

I remember when Dave Wallis's car was bog standard (Well Lane 1) and now look at him!!
Hi RICH, did you send e-mails as I have had computer problems over the last few weeks and didn't receive any if you did.

Reserves are exactly that but it is quite normal for three or four people, maybe even more to be unavailable on the day. At No. 38 however, Dave Peck is the etarnal optomist.

Mick,

We are only allowed to run 25 cars in total, so if everyone turns up who says they will then NONE of the reserves will get a run, but in the 9 RR days that I've run so far, this has NEVER happened.

Someone always drops out.

There's no guarantee of running if you are a reserve but the top 10 reserves all have a fair to middling chance of a run I'd say.

Cheers
