I am going to take it nice and easy on the way up.
Once its warmed up it seems to run fine.
I phoned the nearest dealer (cutlers, no longer a franchise, but still repairs) and they said they would have to order the part and probably charge a fortune.
Its strange because this fault appeared from nowhere. When i get to the clinic, there will be no sign of it as the engine will be warm, but i am hoping they can track it down. I think the maf is the most likely source.

Greg - I had no trouble ordering a MAF sensor insert from the Hylton Subaru place in Worcester. Piece of **** to fit, too.
Guess yours would be a different part no. to mine though. (MY99 UK model).

Well i have been up to the scoobyclinic today.
The car started normally this morning but was still a bit lumpy when cold, but not as bad as it was. As soon as it was warm it was just like normal.
When i got up there they checked for any error codes but found nothing. Of course now it was running perfect. They dont think its the maf as it would still affect a warm engine.
While i was up in scotland i used two tanks with octane booster as i could'nt get optimax up there. I had never used this before. On the return journey i filled up with optimax when it was available and then filled up again on the services. The car ran perfect while away and on the journey back. Got home and stuck it in the garage for a week untill the gammon day
. Then starting problems and cold running problems.
The booster seems too much of a coincidence to me. Perhaps it will take a few cold starts to reset the ecu to recoginise optimax again. This is just my theory.
The clinic could not find anything wrong. I could have left it up there so they could try the cold start tomorrow. The other option was to bring it home and see what develops (choose this one).
So hopefully the next few days will sort it one way or the other.
I will keep you posted.

greg your model car does not adjust as it goes along... so putting better octane fuel in it will not make a difference unless you reset the ECU so it can learn those as the 'optimal' settings then it will back off when lower grade fuel put in it... My car did this on a random basis and then would be ok... it turned out to be the maf ... does not show anything on faults as it is not faulty... the sure fire way to see is to leave the battery disconnected overnight or better still do an ecu reset. You'll find out on here by searching... My bet, however, is a crank position sendor starting to play up or a lambda sensor going... you've not long had it teked have you??? my bet is that due to the re-programming things are running warmer etc. so therefore will shorten the life of certain componants like lamda sensors. I would say changing the maf every couple of years is a must really along with an ECU reset..
Doctor Fizz.
I certainly concour on the ol' MAF thingy. Mind would idle roughly now and again, and rather than risk it leaning off on boost and destroying the motor, I spent £70 quid and it fixed it.
Could it be an HT lead braking down, coil packs, moisture affecting an earth, etc?
