Apple , you had me thinking about pads so I have just rung Mintex and they say the M1230 is a small step up from standard and no where near as good as the M1144's , they also say its not available in the MGB585's , Mintex said only the M1144 and 1155's are available in that shape pad

 

M1230 isn't available in MGB585 as it's a newer material which isn't put on an "old" part reference It's classed as a "heavy duty" standard replacement material for cars of higher speed and / or larger GVW. It's used a lot for white van man due to the driving "style" but is still kind to discs, clean and low / no noise which unfortunately M1144 isn't all the time

I thought I'd gone through some of my old contacts (I'm ex-Mintex) and found somewhere to make me some up but it's not coming off at the moment I'm working on plan B - still interested in a kit but sourcing some alternative material...

How do these red brembos Ian is offering us compare to the standard bug eye gold brembo's?

Do you think it is worth paying an extra £400 for them (front and rears)?
I have been offered a set of the gold ones at a reasonable price, talking to Alyn@ASPerformance today he has put me off the gold ones a bit, saying they were a lot heavier that the subaru 4-pots and would be more prone to overheating and the brake fade / warping / cracking of disks associated with it.

I'd appreciate your comments and may be interested on joining this GB depending on the outcome.

 

Just to let you guys know that I have ordered the stuff I am after from Ian: 335mm Brembo Kit & Rear discs/pads. My rears are shot and my fronts are 'restricting my enthusiasm' Approx 320bhp with manifoild & dp to go on yet!

It seems like it should but can someone confirm the 335 setup will fit below 17" speedline turinis? (they were originally bought as a higher clearance wheel)

How do we sort out the discount if we order "early" or do we pay full whack and Ian sends out a rebate depending on how many take up the offer?

Is Ian working to the names on the list as anybody and his dog could ring up and get a set cheap - good for the punters but I doubt Ian would be too chuffed about his (lack of) profits after a while

Does Ian still not accept Credit Cards ???

I seriously want a 335mm kit but have zero finances.

 

No he doesn't take credit cards but you can pay with a credit card cheque usually found attached to the bottom of your credit card statement ,email him for details

Does he take debit cards, i.e. switch etc or is it just less hassle posting a normal cheque?

 

Does anyone know if you can put the standard discs and pads back on to sell the car as standard after this kit has been fitted (as you have to drill and tap the hubs??)

Also, I've been looking at the posts after the previous group buy on this kit and I'm really confused as to which pads to get.............

-In general the Ferrado's are regarded as being the best,but on such a large disc, they seem to 'squeel' alot at very low speeds and can occasionally cause 'wobble' of the steering wheel due to uneven build up of pad deposits on the discs!!!
-The Mintex don't seem to be regardrd as being as good, but don't squeel as much or cause wobble, but they do create alot of dust!!!

Now I'm all confused as to which pads to order???

What pads is everyone else going for?? Does anyone know if we can request EBC red ceramic pads with this kit???

As Jumbomechanic asked - I would like to know if possible to revert back to standard after tapping the caliper holes ?

Also any idea on how much Ian would charge to fit this kit [ I have found he is not too far away ] ? I wouldnt be comfortable tapping the holes myself !

I reckon the Ferodos are the ones to go for - have run two sets on standard discs and although they can cause some wobble from pad deposits occasionally - it soon wears off again.

 

When you tap out the hole the hole size stays the same , so you can fit your standard brakes on at a later date , all you are doing is cutting a thread into them .

Ian charges £95 to fit this kit including dot 5:1 fluid

The red stuff ceramic are not available in this pad shape yet , if you ask Ian he favours the Mintex M1144 pads , but its your choice.

He doesn't take any plastic , says he's been stung too much in the past with credit card fraud.

Finally caught up with Ian so ordering my kit today

He also mentioned a special deal of rear discs going cheap if bought with a front set:

Newage rotors, normally £195 - yours for £150 a pair
Classic rotors, normally £145 - yours for £100 a pair

Can get grooved, drilled or grooved and drilled...

(dunno whether pads included tho' - you'll have to contact him to find that bit out)

What a difference, i'm still bedding them in but even with normal braking it shouts confidence. The added bonus being they look stunning!!

Does anyone know what make the rear discs would be?

You say 'rotors'? Does this just mean rear discs (I'm a bit thick!!)?

Are the rears one-piece (ie. like standard OEM rears)?

don't know about the disc make...

rotors = things that go round = discs (just me going back to my old braking days )

I'm sure I've seen a thread with pictures on somebody fitting a set so it's worth having a search...

I think they're one piece but best check with Ian.

 

The rear discs he sells are a one piece discs , exactly like the standard ones but either grooved and or drilled

 

Couldn't be bothered to read the whole thread but just have a few thoughts for you guys/gals since I have this 335mm kit.

1. Ferrodo pads are well dusty so be prepared to clean your wheels at least once per week.
2. These will fit under "CERTAIN" 17 inch alloys. RB5 rims no problem. Have heard earlier 17's don't have the clearence, need
3. These disks may vibrate and squeek like mad for the first 2 months or so. You need to give them the usual few hundred miles run in then you need to go and thrash the pants of them, they need loads of heat build up to get them sorted. Feels like they are warped but they aren't, trust me.
4. Certain people's (I know a few people with this kit) brakes squeel like mad during light use even after you have ran them in, so stopping in traffic becomes a nightmare. Keep your brakes calipers/pads cleaned and greased and it is less of an issue.
5. Get some extra pins with your kit. If you clean your brakes or remove/refit your pads regularly you will wear these out quickly, the pin ends needed straightening and bending each time you remove/refit pads.
6. If fitting them yourself, make sure your hub surface is SPOTLESS as the bigger discs will emphisize any irregularities.

These brakes do work well, much better than standard, and they look good. To keep them looking good clean your bells regularly and paint your calipers.

How long has Ian said for delivery? This can take quite a while as he is a very very busy man.
