You can make a cheap and reliable tracking system yourself. Its very effective and cheap compared with mainstream systems. Also much harder to locate.
Am looking into it at the mo but so far the spec would be:
GSM tracking via net
Listen into car at any time
Battery backed up
Small.
Am going to set one up in my car as a backup to the active tracker I already have installed.
Will keep you posted.
BTW didnt you have any physical security such as a disclok/barrier lock??

Physical security makes no difference.
The last car I had nicked was an XR2. It was my first car after finishing uni and took me ages to get it - my auntie bought it from new and it was mint.
Had it for 5 days and some Scouse scally nicked it from Blackpool
It had immobiliser, steering lock and handbrake lock - there was no glass anywhere so i think they took it on a wagon or something. Found the shell in Crosby six months later. Was third party only as well so lost £1500 in 5 days.

BOB'5: Officer, I've been tracking my car using my own tracking device and it's in a garage at this address. Any chance you could retrieve it?
Officer: Not without a search warrant ... brrrrrrrrr
Insurer: Your own tracking device you say, sorry it's not on our database.
An interesting project but not of much practical use.

Not all insurers require trackers.
Is more discreet than the usual tracking devices.
I have an active tracker btw anyhow and will be using it as backup. Also hardly worth spending £££'s in installing a tracker and another £££s in subscription on runaround cars.

DIY Trackers like TrakM8 are available which use GPS over SMS/GSM
or
www.webtechwireless.com for a GPS/GPRS tracker
For the TrakM8 you need a P&G sim & for the GPRS you ideally need a contract sim.
The Webtech allows additional sensors to be fitted (alarm going off, boot opening etc) & has the added benefit of acting as modem for a laptop or PDA

A combination of technology, physical devices, vigilance and common sense is needed.
The biggest single anti-theft measure would be increased sentances instead of the slap on the wrist criminals currently get.

Having read all the previous posts since Sunday i feel i should comment, really feel gutted for the violated scooby owner in question, and i have my eyes peeled every day hoping that i see your scoob.
The fact is this is'nt an oppurtunist theft this is organised . And as a fellow Scooby owner even if it's only for a few weeks i really feel for you, But at the end of the day it was always going to be stolen just because it was in the wrong place at the right time, What is worse coming back to an empty parking space or being confronted as you put your car in the garage late at night by the crims ? I know what i would prefer, After confronting someone stealing the spare wheel off my brand new Discovery late at night there has only been ever one option for me since then. I was'nt hurt in the attack but the fact that he was brandishing a wheel brace made me see sence when he threatend to ' remove my head if i moved another pace ' says it all. One Transit van, three blokes a look out, the thief and the driver. We are all full of bravado at the time we see what's going on but common sense kicks in ! They stole 15 4x4 wheels that night and they was'nt caught because they had done a recce and knew where to run if they was caught.
I had a new wheel two days later and my head intact.
Don't give up on Scooby ownership, You're insured and get another one. If mine was stolen i would'nt want it back the fact the thieving scum had been driving it would be enough for me, I would just think Ok You won't break me I'll get an even better one !
As for the comments on the Tracker failing i don't know, was told in a pub once if the car is covered in tin foil the satellite can't recieve a signal ? Might just be pub talk but who know's ????
You can't be at fault for what's happened, Like i said wrong place right time.
Feel for you mate but don't let the B*****ds grind you down.

SG: no probs mate....I do work at a snails pace though....let me get it all set up on mine first. What do you think of this additonal feature.....being able to listen into the car cabin and 'talk' to the driver/offenders
Some of the best security is the simple DIY type. Things like simple trip switches are very effective and an absolute pain in the **** for theives.
Also cannot stress enough the peace of mind a disclok gives.
An alarm/immobilser simply isn't good enough.

Gutted for you steve.
Not sure if anyone as said this but most of the time the trackers are found in a field because there all fitted in the same place on P1`S.

DW, not yet mate, will keep LADS up to date.
R.B. good to hear from you mate. Your right in what you say and thats part of the problem. With all the chasing round to find out how this happened i've become a mine of useless information about these things!
Dosent need anything as sophisticated as tin foil to get past them i'm sorry to say. The basic spec of the unit, bearing in mind its age, gives ample opportunity to the thief.
cheers
Steve.

T.M., first things first, sorry to read what's happened. General question to people talking about trackers etc.....would you really want your stolen scoob back, given the way it's likely to have been treated in its absence? I promptly said goodbye to Tescos when they insisted that I fit a tracker come renewal time. Can't come to terms with the idea that I'm expected to pay an extra premium to be given back something that, in reality, I'll never want to see again should the unthinkable occur. For me, prevention ( multilock, disclock etc ) is better than retrieval. Understand fully your despair T.M., but it might be better in the long run not to get it back, if only for how you'll feel about the car afterwards? ( Don't take this the wrong way, genuine sympathy for your situation ). Good luck!

Micared, thanks for your words.
believe it or not, we would actually consider having it back, depending on condition. I spent a huge amount of time working on this car never mind the expense. To add to that, my teenage daughters both came to care for the mota and even learned a little about how she worked and helped with maintainance.
Even considering offering a reward for safe recovery and successful prosecution, a significant reward even.
cheers
Steve.

Sorry for your loss dude things will pick up
I know exactly how it feels.
I had a Version 5 WRX STi Type R and had Leda suspension fitted. I went to the Donnington Trackday in 2000 when that RB5 was taken and was shocked that it could be taken at such a busy venue.
Then a few weeks later i came out of my gym at lunchtime to find an empty space where my car was! Taken in broad daylight! I made the mistake of leaving my work keys, house keys, cards, mobile phone, mini-discs, cds, some clothes etc in the car.
2 weeks later my brothers Evo 6 was nicked from his drive..they broke in and took the keys!
I do feel sorry for u dude.
Barrier Deadlock it, Disk-Lok it, RAC Trackstar it but do not let them put u off
Good luck

gutted to read this Steve, i know how much the P1 means to you and the girls.
If there is anyway i can help if you get the car back, let me know.
Security at Donington is beyond a joke now, it's rediculous how often cars are being taken from inside the barrier "secured" padock area, Donington need to get their act together, a system as mentioned earlier with passes isnt rocket science.
