What on earth would the local plod know about tracing down an internet scammer?!?!?!?!?!!
My first e-mail to NHTCU:
Hi,
Not sure if you can do anything or are interested in this seeming opertunity.
I am selling my car and received a seemly innocent e-mail from a potential buyer asking for details about the cars condition which I replied to but not giving any other details about where I live.
I am pretty clued up on with computer, internet etc, so did a trace of the e-mail, low and behold it originated from nigeria, suprise suprise!
Anyway, Received a reply from the so-called 'buyer' asking for contact details so that he can arrange to 'purchase' (in other words scam me) the car.
Would you be interested in dealing with this so that perhaps you can nick these damn muppets and hopefully lock them up and throw away they key?
Was thinking that by arranging a for him to 'view' the car at my house ( the address of your nick in otherwords) and pass on the details to you so you could deal with these scamming scumbags.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Phil
There reply:
Dear Sir
This is not a matter that can be dealt with by this unit. However you may
be able to secure some assistance if you contact your local police. I would
caution you however that this particular fraud is sometime worked in a less
obvious way. The attacker agrees to send a cheque in advance for a higher
amount that that which is due, says it's a mistake, and asks you to return
the balance once you have banked the cheque. Some weeks later when you have
sent the money you will find that the cheque was in fact a forgery and has
bounced.
At this point you have no money and have paid the suspect a lump of your own
money for the privilege.
Therefore your best advice if you cannot get local police interested is not
to proceed with the transaction. However if you do chose to do not proceed
with sending anything anywhere until you are completely sure that any funds
have fully cleared.
I hope this is of assistance to you

Its a scam. String him along if you ask me.
Somehow you may be able to sell him an Impreza, but then actually send him a Matchbox model? Not sure exactly how you would do it, but it's possible I guess.
