I've just finished my ECU interface and have sent and received some data successfully.

The baud rate _is_ 4800 baud.

Hmmm,

Bit of lateral thinking was required, or perhaps just sleeping on it... The request does have start & stop bits, it's just that there are gaps between the packets sent by the select monitor. Probably because it is refreshing it little LCD display all the time.

If you are interested in contributing to this project, please mail me now, since it's going to be impractical to distribute graphs, logs and other data via the bbs. I.e. this thread may go a little quiet.

Cheers

Thumbs up

well done steve,

Its interesting that you find you can only communicate at 4,800bps.

I am pretty sure the select monitor connects at 9,600bps....or 14,400bps if its a new model (based upon the testing I did).

Did those codes help you out ?

regards

Ian.

Hi Ian,

The baud rate may depend on the ECU version. Mine is undoubtedly 4800 baud - I have a digital storage oscilloscope to watch it on ! The codes you supplied are for the OBD-II standard. Unfortunately the 99/00MY ECU is not OBD-II compliant, so the codes don't tie up.

What car model and year did you expieriment with ?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Adam,

Wow, it must be a pretty impressive project after two years of development.

Don't keep us in suspense - tell us who it is and what it does !
Which model years of car does it work on ?

Steve

P.S. He has stayed very quiet. Is he working on a commercial project or something ?

Well, I can now log anything that the select monitor can, using my laptop.

Anyone know what the 'Primary Control' parameter represents when retrieved via the select monitor ?

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the sparse updates on this thread - I've been a bit busy lately. Anyway a few updates in one...

The project that Adam M mentioned wasn't a dash display for the standard ECU, but a display built up to go with an aftermarket ECU as a one off by one of the well known guys on this bbs - Pectel I think it was. So AFAIK, the only commercial display for std ECUs is still the Techtom. Anyone seen any others appear recently ?

I posted seperately on the drivetrain section to ask what the hell primary control is. I think it was Pete Croney who replied. It is the 'wastegate actuator duty cycle' to the rest of us.

The MY01/02 is an interesting one. Whilst it supports OBD-II, it also supports some Subaru specific protocol. If you plug on a select monitor, you can choose between OBD-II and standard scooby diags. If you compare them, you see just how poor OBD-II is - the update rate of OBD-II is so slow in comparison. Be glad Subaru did their own thing too. I have not yet had time to look at this MY, so there's a project for someone that way inclined !

I am working on both laptop and dashboard versions of display. The laptop version's working pretty well, as the guys from the recent PE Scooby Dyno day will confirm. The only thing I haven't done is document all the Diagnostic Trouble Codes, but there's no technical hurdles left - just my own time constraints now. The dashboard version is in the early stages, since it's easier to prototype features on the laptop version in a high level language, rather than in assembler.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, both products will be available commercially some time this year, if I pull my finger out. If any of you guys are working on projects, please continue to use this thread to post info or queries - I'm happy to help if I can.

Cheers

Steve

Hi steve, glad you are still at it.

I need to talk to you at some point about a supplier of ready made ODB->serial connector cables. I think I have a place that can make them pretty cheap.

Ian.

Mail me.

Multiplex Engineering is pretty cheap, but US based.
