We had a dog and 4 cats together with no problems at all.

There was a dog initially, which ignored the cats and even walked on them when he went blind, much to their dismay and then when he unfortunately died, we bought a puppy of the same breed some months later and while the cats were a little shocked at the exuberance of the puppy, they soon learned to get out of his way when he was in yo-yo mode.

Now the only problem is when he wants to play and drops his rubber toys on their heads.

LOL So true, we bought a giant rubber chicken for our lab, and she just doesn't understand the cats don't want to play with it when she drops it at their feet, covered in drool etc.

You can see the cats go "YUUUUUUUCK"

in general he doesn't seem at all interested in cats. he's a slightly dumb, stick fetching type beast.

Avoid brown cats, and keep them on the move in that case

Then there's a big chance he/she would do just fine.

My vote would be "go for it", you can be sensible for the rest of your life after that

I think if we had got the cat first it may have been a different story, but at the moment she hates the puppy and he just chases her everywhere!! To be honest if your getting the cat from a kitten, they will adapt to the dog a lot better than if it was the other way round (like mine!) It is very frustrating because my cat was very loving and always near by, but since we've had the puppy she never comes downstairs anymore due to fear of the dog. It is actually pretty upsetting coz she does have a lot of love to give!!

Sorry for going on.......my advice would be to go ahead with the kitten. The dog will soon love it!!
I agree 100%. I have always had dogs first and introduced kittens with no prob at all. This last time already had the cat and introduced a GSD pup, still after 14 months the cat is very wary and has distanced herself from us Most of the time, if I am near them both, the dog will leave the cat alone... but if I'm not watching, the dog will chase the cat

My mum had a cat and my brother found a Chiwauwah dog, they couldnt stand each other, dead funny when it got territorial over the place in fron of the fire, there would be a lot of posturing and then they would lie not looking at each other for hours and one or other would forget, stretch and youch the other and they would jump up, it was like John Candy and Steve Martin in Planes Trains and automobiles when they share a bed and wake up in each others arms !
