Olly - i believe that other forms of pollution are probably more significant than cigarette smoke in casuing athsma. i was just trying to be difficult.

as for passive smoking - my personal opinion is that it will be proven to cause some harm. when it was first suggested that smoking might cause cancer, a sh*tload of "evidence" was put forward to refute this. everyone now accepts this causal link, and i feel that it is only a matter of time before some kind of causal link between passive smoking and respiratory disease is accepted.

I agree there is most likely a causal link, but it certainly isn't the ONLY one or necessarily the major one either. A lot of people seem to band around as fact that Smoking WILL cause Lung Cancer as if it were a certainty in every case. It is more that smoking is 1 of a number of agents that contribute to lung cancer. In some cases one agent is sufficient, in other a combination is required (look back at my earlier links, there is a study there that medical radiation exposure in conjunction with smoking is a much higher risk than just smoking) and in others all the agents the person is exposed to has no effect.

Personally I'm in favour of a ban for the sake of my own health.

I do smoke a bit, mainly socially, but there have been occasions when I have started to move into the regular smoker domain, okay still probably less than 40 a week, but at this point I have always tried to give up completely.

My will power seems to fail when out drinking with mates who smoke, envitably I end up poncing one or two and then typically end up buying a box. If there wasn't any smoking in public places then hopefully I wouldn't fall into this trap and I would be able to stay off the ciggies permenantly. Well that's my theory anyway

 

I am in favour of a ban, cant even stomache the smell of *** smoke and will only go into well ventilated pubs.

as for the eating factor and people lighting up well thats just plain arrogant, in these cases i take to pushing a finger up my nose and giving it a good raking out then inspect the debris much to everyones disgust, no worse than blowing foul smelling smoke in my direction putting me off my food

If you want to talk about the cost to the NHS when banning stuff, ban all foods that are fattening and all fast food restaurants before looking at banning smoking.

Smokers drink more and stay for longer when they visit bars. Banning smoking/smoking areas hurts the entertainment business - just look at Canada as a shining example of this.

Even though I smoke, I agree with banning smoking in restaurants with close tables. I don't like people smoking at the end of their meal when I've just started mine.

I also agree with the banning of cigars in any indoor public place.

A personal observation is that the more fervent an anti smoker - who is all for banning smoking in bar/restaurants - the less likely they are to go to said establishments regularly.

Most people do take several attempts to finally give up the weed. Give her some encouragement, rather than negativity

Personally, the most success with people I know has been through the Alan Carr book and altering their view on smoking (and why they do it) rather than using substitute products (nicorette etc) or deterrents (zyban).

If Claire can keep the substitute products from the front of her mind while reading the book, she can benefit from it too....

 

Hve you ever seen a smoker try to give up? They're always climbing the walls within 3 days!

One of my best mates won't even go to a pub if he's trying to give up because he'll either go and scrounge a cig off someone or turn into a pyschobitch And he says that's just down to being able to smell the smoke....

 

Smokers are often thoughtless. I was sitting on a bench on the platform waiting for a train the other day. A couple came over, sat down, and then lit up. I stood up, walked away and had to stand waiting for the train. Not really a big deal as such but I thought it was pretty selfish.

My main gripe has to be that your clothes stink of smoke after being in a pub or restaurant, and if it's really bad my eyes start to water. I don't want the place to be overrun with rules - people can do what the hell they like in my opinion. I just don't think it's fair for other people to be adversely affected by your actions.

 

If I go to a restaurant and spill curry down my shirt then so be it. I just don't spill curry over anyone else.

If I have too many beers and decide to puke down God's telephone, then so be it. I just don't puke on anyone else.

And it's ok for smokers to blow smoke over me because...?

Don't like the smell of smoke at all, but for some reason, for a whole weekend, I managed to put up with it. Live and let live I guess.... then again tonight, the local was heaving and the heat was intense - I've had to take a bath since getting home to get rid of the smell of tabs.
