bit like non-company car drivers choosing diesel cars. Unless you drive to the moon and back it doesn't really save you money, bearing in mind additional cost of diesel car, and cost per litre.
i haven't done all the maths, but i cover in excess of 300 miles a week, every week. i put as much as 6 tanks of Optimax in Scooby a month (@ now over £40 a tank). so i bought a Pug 306 DTurbo a few weeks back (500 miles per tank @ £50 a tank with briskish driving).

yes i added to my insurance, will have to tax and m.o.t both cars next year and paid £2700 for the car. but its saving me approx £120 - £130 a month. this more than covers tax, m.o.t and additional insurance premium and leaves me around £250-£300 quid up on the year. meanwhile Scooby gets less wear and tear and is at less risk of damage for a mundane daily journey in traffic in which i get no particular enjoyment.

when i get back into Scoob at the weekends its a real joy. the Pug is frugal and fun on the right road. its extremely chuckable and has more than ample pace for the daily grind. so i do see a financial benefit to owning it - i get the additional benefit of a load carrying, park anywhere (lower theft risk than Scoob) daily motor.

plus if Scooby goes in for work longer than a few hours, there's no car hire (assuming a courtesy car isn't provided) or public transport inconvenience - i hate public transport and use it as little as possible (like never, unless flying somewhere)!

my fuel bill is currently £160 a week (always, always optimax™).
daily commute five days.
firm gave me a fuel card for optimax and oil
total fuel bill for the year is 22% of £2200 which is nice!
