It's the same with insurance here in Oz too. I was offered a loan to buy the Scoob from HSBC (them knowing all details of the car) but when I asked them for insurance they said no chance!!! I'm 28 with FNCB and no points ever...
Edit to say: The Clio was great fun though, so don't underestimate it if you have no luck on the Scoob insurance!!

Yeah... whatever mate... just had my slow, near enough std, MY99 uk turbo on the rollers... 240BHP 233 lbs/ft Torque... thats a real slow motor.... get a grip
It may seem slow to a 300+ BHP STi or something... but its still a damn site quicker than a Saxo.
On a more positive note, if you can afford to insure/run it... go for it m8 you'll love it... even if its a not so quick UK car

having just changed my VTR for a STi i can say that the power hike for me was huuuuuuge! 
x3 to be exact! only had it 2 weeks and already thirsting after more power!
in the saxos defense, i must say i had mine for 4.5 yrs and in that time other than normal servicing it only needed a new rad and exhuast, shoody build quality....?????
if my STi lasts the next 4.5 years with only a Rad and Exhaust going i'll be a very happy man! (slightly different cars granted)

oh and im 23, i was only 22 when i bought the car, it cost me a grand with tescos to insure it then....and now also. Thats with 6 years NCB and 0 points.....

And in that video footage you get the best part of owning an Impreza in my opinion - the SOUND - glory in it!!!!

First time buyer
Hi, this is my first time on here and this thread was a very interesting read. I am looking for an impreza to buy before christmas (shopping around and getting all the info to get the right one). I am thinking about my budget of around £6 or £7k which should give me a decent '95 ish car. For this budget and as my first impreza, what would people recommend?
Also with regards to the insurance, i'm 21 (22 in july) and i have had no joy online and the only quote i have had is from www.footmanjames.com who quoted £2800 on a '93 £6k WRX. Hope i can find cheaper!

I would also look into running costs aswell... any scoob will cost you quite a lot to keep on the road (in petrol costs alone
)You should also take into account that imports are setup to run on 100 RON petrol, so unless the ecu has been remapped to run on 97 RON (Optimax/SUL) then you will need to buy octane boost otherwise you'll soon have a knackered engine. Do plenty of research and you'll be fine. Have a look at the clubs section on here to find out where your local club is, they will prove to be a great source of info, get in touch with them and Im sure they'll be more than happy to have you along to see what its all about. Best to find someone that knows their stuff when going to look at a car aswell.

So the cheaper option is a UK car but looking in places like autotrader most of the cars appear to be imports. as i'm just starting, what is the UK equivilant? is it the 2000 Turbo? i can always start at the lower end and work my way up!

If you look on the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club (SIDC) website on the FAQ (link above on my previous post) section, you will find the model history and specs etc. But yes 2000 Turbo is the UK model.
Nothing wrong with the UK models at all. IIRC, the later ones, especially the MY99 are often regarded as the best ones to buy. Like I suggested, have a look at whats for sale on here, chances are you find more realistic prices and hopefully, the cars will have been owned by enthusiasts which means they will have been looked after properly. If/when you go for a test drive, watch to see how long they let the engine warm up for before taking past 3-3500 rpm and see if they let it warm down properly before switching the engine off. If they dont do either, walk away cos they probably havent cared for the car properly (and scoobs need lots and lots of TLC
)J
Edited to say - when you buy one... hope you have a good bank balance cos it wont be long before you'll want to start modding it.... when you get to that stage... theres no going back, the list of mods is never ending

A large enough loan should do it! Thats how i'm planning to start. After all i am a poor student and this will be my graduation present for myself. haha!
