John Felstead

How much has your Westy cost you all in? Did you have the lump to drop into it or did you tune up a bought one?

I'm kinda interested in this sort of thing as frankly I'm getting a bit fed up of the stroppy way that my STi produces it's power ("you get 280 bhp on a cloudy day, with a prevailing wind, as long as there's a y in the month") and it's relative non-tuneability.

Cheers

Richard

Richard,

My car is a very rare westfield, it is the fully crash tested and type aproved ZEi220, they only made about 10 i think. My particular car was the MD of westfields personal car and was used in all the press articles and brochures, i even have a back lit poster of it from an advertising campaign on the london underground, used to promote the midlands industies.

As standard the ZEi220 uses the cosworth 4x4 engine running 220BHP, hence the name. The car cost me £12,500 (its was £23,000 new in 93) and i have probably spent £2,500 uprating vertually every system on the car to make it a quick trackday/road car. I need to sort the cooling out as the current setup cannot cope with 350BHP. Once that is done i will stop making changes to the car as its prety awesome now.

The next upgrade is some time with a decent instructor like Rob Mac to get the most out of myself as the car is good enough now to beat most things, I was very surprised just how some simple advice from rob helped speed me up significantly and made the car easier to drive. I was driving like a tosser with him in the car, peer presure and all that, but his advice helped make me slow things down and yet be quicker.

It is a very diferent animal to a tin top car on track, totally diferent driving charicteristics and huge fun.
You can buy a decent westfield with a 2litre vauxhall engine for about £10,000 which will be almost as quick as mine, i just love turbo power though, the torque delivery makes the car a real challenge to drive quickly, its very easy to overdrive the car which i was doing with Rob in with me, but you can get it sideways anywhere you like if you are going for fun and not lap times.

I was lapping dono in 1min 23secs 2 up, i recon after some more coaching from rob i will be doing 1min 20's, thats pretty quick for a road car.

Taking Harj on track was a highlight as i dont think he apreciated before what driving a quick RWD car can be like, its always good to show people the huge fun to be had with diferent types of car. Harj was quiet for a whole 5 seconds, very strange. LOL

Mr Leigh.
Have to say I'd fancy my chances at getting under 6 secs. The slowest time I had at the Revs event was 4.9.
As Mike quite often says, look at the 1/4 mile terminal speed. Think my best was 108, Stefs is around 99/100.
Best indication was a video done at the Revs day. I was miles ahead. (Before you say it Mike, yes, you were 2!!)

Richard,

I probably wasnt very clear on my answer re my car V's a 16v vauxhall jobbie. I dont know of anyone using a turbo 16V in a westfield, it would be a mistake anyway as they are crap compared to a cosworth.

My car will absolutely destroy a 16V engined car on acceleration and top speed, it isnt quite as quick through the corners though as it is heavier, on a track they will be fairly close, probably 2-3 seconds slower. On the road thats another thing all together, my car will kill almost anything around upto 140MPH, bikes included.

My car on slicks will be much quicker on track, i would get a bigger gain than a 16V engined car as my real limiting factor is traction, i can get the car in full power slides in 4th at 110MPH in the dry absolutely no problem, put it on slicks and all that power would go into faster lap times.

I went for the cosworth turbo car as i know the engineering of this config well and have good contacts to allow me to keep the upgrades coming, if i find MikeR's new 500BHP engine allows him to be quicker at silverstone (prety unlikely ) then i can go and get a 420BHP motor put together.

I still think there is a lot more time to come from a decent coaching session though, we all like to think we know what we are doing on track, but i have always had the opinion i can learn a lot more, i an now sure that is the case. God help MikeR when i have learned to drive properly.

Harj, glad you enjoyed? it mate, had bloody good traction with you in the car

I was actually down on power compaired to cadwell park as the heat was killing my boost, i only saw 1.65BAR peak when i usually get 1.8BAR so i was only about 320BHP yesterday. Pitty my charge temp guage wasn't ready in time, as i would have known for sure then whether Water Injection would be the way to go to keep the boost up, my gut feeling is that it is needed but i wont make a decision without the facts.

Biggest improvement on the car has to be the brakes. The Wilwood 4 Pots are just superb, i tried out some Hawk Ferro Carbon HT9 brake pads for the first time at donington. Some Indy Cars use these pads and at £60 a set they are dead cheep. They were just amazing, i managed to lock the wheels at 130MPH. Would never have dreamed of being able to do that at 60MPH with my last brake setup, which was the top spec westfield 2 pots (realy crap). The stiffer springs were good aswell, killed most of the body roll, i will put a front antiroll bar on next i think to give some more balance to the chasis and try and kill a bit of the overstear.

Still lots to do but i am nearly there.

John

I'm prepared to offer you 200 quid CASH for that car right now!!!

That sounds like, erm, a bit of a "handful". In fact, very scary indeed.

add a couple of 0's richard and it's a deal

It's actually quite easy to drive, very easy to overdrive. It's far more natural for me to drive sideways in a RWD car than it is to go quickly in a 4WD car.

I started out by rallying a 998cc Hartwell Hillman Imp years ago and those things were tail happy so a front engined RWD car feels very easy to me to slide on the throtle.

I still have a lot to learn to be realy quick on track, which is one of the reasons i love doing track days so much. The day i think i have it sussed will be the day to give up i think, as i will be deluding myself LOL

If I was you matey, I would wait and use "PROPER" timing gear at SantaPod for your 1/4 mile times

I'll be there

On track & 0-60

Looks like there won't be many cossies. Loads of scoobs & TVRs tho'

37 track places left.

Why is it we scoobies always have to show the cossies up?

Hi Stef, glad to hear you had a great holiday!

Yeah its seems my car is running even better now Last time at the POD I asked one of the guys in the engineering booth about sprint times to 60. He told me that they have the sensors and software on the strip to do that and will soon be running full on tests for manufacturers, seemed mine worked fine.

I was the first to run that day thats why they tried it on mine. It should be fully working and in usage by the end of the year Im told.

You can get STI blocks quicker than that. I know
Wonder if I'll be the first Scoob in the UK to crack 12 sec 1/4.

Craig, sorry to disappoint you, but there have been a couple of runs less than 12 seconds in the UK by an Impreza.

The car run an 11.4 @125mph !

It did have a "few" mods done to it though, enabling it to run 2.0 bar of boost!

The car has been de-tuned to about 380bhp at the moment, and is/was for sale (~£25k)

Unlikely, seeing as the Scottish one has apparently done a 11.8!

Somehow I don't thinks Colin's Focus falls into the category of 1/4 street car racing! do you? Shame really, theres no decent competition out there with 300BHP

Hello peeps! I had a great holiday thank you.
It seems some of you have been busy over the lasy couple of weeks.

Harj.
How did you get a 0-60 time from the Pod? Was there a timer there or something? And we don't ALL need 300bhp do we?

John.
Sounds like your car's getting more mental, gutted I missed Dono but there's always next time....

Bad news about my car though. I was expecting it to be ready on my return, but have been told there are no short blocks in the country until July 7th so it will be at least mid July before I get it back. I'm not a happy chappy.
I'm getting very dis-illusioned with the whole Scooby thing to be honest.....

Stef.
