I'm surprised only one person has mentioned it so far. For me the best sounding car is without doubt the Lancia Stratos.
A singing BDA is sweet, but a singing Stratos is sweeter still

oh yeah metro 6R4's sound awesome, also some of the Audi 5 cylinder engined cars sound a bit different, saw one at croft circuit, sounded awesome....
Also agree the Judd powered cars sound evil too.... saw a Sintura V10 a few years back and was one of the best sounding cars ever!!
High revving big engined cars do sound really good IMO

Aston Martin Vanquish V12 - Awesome. Had one overtake me on the M11 and it was mint. Then I was sat behind it at railway crossroads and even idling it was a beast.
That new MG race car thingy clarkson had on Top Gear with the Merlin Engine that they compared to a Spitfire - sounded ace.
Simon.

on a per no of cylinders basis
4 - Integra type R at 8,500 rpm or BDA escort on 45's
5 - Audi sport quattro group b rally car - simply evil
6 - 6R4 metro or Stratos
8 - Cosworth DFV, the classic sound of F1
12 - Lambo Muira - pure sound

OK, I'm no expert on american supercars but:
The Dodge Charger? and Ford Mustang from Bullitt. Come on, how many of you have never seen any part of the film apart from the chase scene because you just keep playing it and rewinding it?
The Hemicuda? in Nash Bridges

saabdriver, the Mustang in Bullitt didn't actually make the noise on the soundtrack, that came from the 289 V8 in the back of McQueen's Le Mans spec GT40
But granted, it was a nice noise

I remember standing in a forrest above Inverness in the pi**ing rain at 7o'clock in the morning waiting for the car we could hear in the distance for what seemed like ages, popping and bangin of the anti lag and the sweet sound of...................Michelle Moutons' Audi Sport Quattro SWB, made it all seem worth it And I have to agree with the previous posts about the BDA Escorts.
There used to be a 350 TVR near us with stainless pipes and it sounded absolutely brilliant, wouldn't have a stereo in a car that sounded like that!

the 1999 206 wrc at the start of a stage with the boost setup for launch, remember standing very close to one at catalunya.
Alfa ferrari with andy burton going through clark memorial stages. Shame its in a museum now. ALthough the 306 cossie with anti lag isnt bad.
Lancia Stratus, remember my heart beating funny watching the stratos coming towards me on a hairpin, cant remeber the rally though. part of BTRDA possibly mansfield.
The 99/2000 maclaren F1 which whooped like a whale.
Must 60's v8 muscle every one of heard sounded special. Pontic gto, various mustang's. cobra,
I like the ducati 748 sound as well for some reason ??.
oh scoobs are pretty special sound also.

Surprised no-ones mentioned more classic Italians:
Ferrari 312/67 (F1 car from 1967)
Lamborghini Miura/Countach/Diablo/any V12
BRM V16 (when it worked)
Ferrari flat 12 from the Testarossa
Lots of classic Alfa engines
3.0/3.2 V6 from the Honda NSX is worth a mention. As is the Honda RA300 and the Eagle Weslake V12.
Notice how many of the cars suggested use either the Rover/Buick V8 or the Ford V8?
Listen to the BRM V16 at:
http://www.billzilla.org/BRM-loudpass.mp3
Plenty more BRM V16 noises further down the page at http://www.billzilla.org/engread.htm

Take a look here for some movies with nice soundtracks.
There is a Macros GT car (on the rollers), ex Will Gollops 6R4 (turbo'ed) and an E30 M3 on throttle bodies with standoff injectors.
Fairly nice noises.
Cheers
Ian
