well you have a point there but it seems to be the case that you are the only one who has found no difference using 95 RON fuel.
Fair point and acknowleged but I wonder how many people have been suckered into using SUL purely on the basis of what everybody does without having even tried NUL.

Cheers

Tried both in my standard MY99 and to be honest I do notice slightly better economy with Optimax , and perhaps a little smoother but no noticable performance increase , I am using Optimax at the moment just because I want to look after the car as much as poss .

this has been a really interesting read, i've still got one question for my00 uk car, do i need to disconnect the battery over night to reset ecu when filling up with sul. Also should i use optimax or just normal super unleaded as they sell plenty of both where i live in maidenhead. I'm getting the idea that the BP ultimate stuff isnt going down as well with you guys.

I'm gonna give this a go for a while and see what happens

Stonkin.....on a MY00 car the ecu 'learns' quicker than older ones so I don't think you will need to reset ,it should only take a tank full or so and it'll be sorted .

Also a bit of info here ..http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm#2.4

I have used normal, super, Optimax and BP Ultimate in mine over the 2 years I have had it. In terms of smoothness, Optimax delivers the best performance in acceleration. In terms of efficiency, SUL and BP seem to get the most miles from a tank. I only use normal if I'm running on fumes and nothing better is available.

Mine is a standard MY97 UK Turbo. I think the Super I use is from Texaco - seems pretty decent. Just costs loads more than Optimax for some reason!

Stonkin.....I use Optimax , mainly because of Price (it's just above 80p a litre at my nearest Shell , whereas my nearest petrol stn want about 86p a litre for their SUL !!!!) , I believe Optimax is rated at 98 ron ( as long as it hasen't been lying around in the tank for ages) and most other SUL (ESSO, BP ETC) is 97 ron . But as I said earlier I don't notice any difference in performance with any of them , just a little smoother

Well i usually get about 320 miles to a tank of NUL. Stuck optimax in, and ran it all through. I've since put another full tank in - drove exactly the same as with NUL, and 270miles for the tank. Not sure where the "better economy" comes from.

Cheeky barsteward greg. I can't afford to go over 2500 revs. I need to rig up a light, similar to low fuel, but its low £ light, for when i rev over 2500 LOL

I have a UKMY00 ppp and have always tried to run the Scoob on Optimax. I have also tried BP Ultimate but last weekend I filled her up with a full tank of Sainsburys SUL. All I can say is the car definitely seems happier on the SUL - ticks over better and the acceleration feels much smoother too. At a difference of 4p per litre I'm afraid I will be sticking with the SUL rather than optimax for the time being Just my 2 pennies worth

Default Optimax

Just run a full tank of optimax and reset ECU and I can notice a change the engine seems to idle better more stable engine revs sweeter and seems quieter I can hear the turbo and exhaust more. I will be sticking to Optimax its only 80.9p a litre compared too 76.9p for normal cant complain really.

I've heard some anecdotes of BP Ultimate being more prone to det than with Optimax; eg. Knocklink lights up more with Ultimate.

Anyone else noticed this ?

Yes, Optimax is a higher RON (98.6) than Ultimate. Ultimate is only a conventional SUL, and is rated at 97.

Put a tank full of ultimate in mine and she wasn't happy, might have been a bad tank full not sure, but i am not too keen on trying it again.

I have had my MY03 WRX for 2 months now, the first owner used to put only Optimax in & I remember that the drive home was great !

I then started to fillup with Esso SUL for about four weeks, but the car seemed to be getting smooth, but not as savage when givig it some berry's !

I then switched back to Optimax, & I am on my fifth tank allready (jesus ...they ain't too good on fule are they !!!) and it feels like it pulls harder again, and possibly a little bit louder or maybe its just me.

I will keep trying other options, but only SUL 97RON or above !

PS .. I get about 230 miles from £40 worth of Optimax, Is this typical ?

I'll see what i can manage next week after running a few tanks through. Mine might improve. I've noticed Optimax in Cheltenham is only 1p more than NUL in kidderminster so thats good. No Tescos points though

I probably average 230/240 on £40 of Optimax. 190 is not typical but I do see it occasionally. I've also seen over 300 but again not typical, cant sit on the motorway at 70/80 for a whole tankful, it is a scooby after all

I put in £30 Optimax at a time and do a range of mixed driving from motorway congestion, hammering the hell out of it on back roads, motorway cruising (not saying at what speed) and I generally get 200 - 225 miles from mine. If I put in £40 I would expect to get circa 300 miles if I was not going crazy all day long. A bad £30 worth for me if I hammer it is about 180 miles.

Brian.

FWIW I know someone at Shell so I asked them about Optimax. Apparently they did a survey on fuel in pertol sations and the average RON for Optimax was 98.2.
