cheers for that, its good to know i'm not alone. there seems to be a concensus that this problem is related to the wastegate somehow.

Subaru should be getting back to me this morning so i let you guys know what they say.

 

Have just spoken to my Scoob dealer.

the good news is that they have spoken to technical and although they have never come across this fault they have given them a nice list of things to try in order to resolve the problem - which they are more than happy to do!

the bad news is that as the problem only occurs between 80-100mph they refuse to road test it to see if the problem has cleared. so it means that i have to be permanantly on hand to take the car out to see if its better!!
which is fair enough i suppose.

so its booked in for a day when i have some time off in the not so distant future.

i'll keep u guys posted!!

 

Frenchboy - you can compare to my Standard WRX (which is proven to deliver 260 bhp) if it would help?

- I would be most interested in the differences as from what I can see on the RR's I have the same (if not more) bhp but slightly less torque .....

I'll let you know if I come up with a cure for the jerky decelleration thing. PPP well worth it IMO.

No real offence meant re the driving tips - I just get a bit synical when some people who get a scoob turn into a driving god overnight!! It would have been nice if just buying a fast bike made me a quick moto x rider when I was racing, took yrs of practice and real racing experience, even then as a good club rider at expert level I realised how cr@p I was compared to the really good club/national riders! There's light years between most of us and the likes of Richard Burns etc.

Know what you mean barney, i dont kid myself that i'm a great driver. i feel like i'm barely scratching the surface of the car's capabilities. i'd love to go out on a track with a real driver to show me just what the car can do.

with regards to the ppp, since i had it at the dealer the other day and had the ecu reset, it does feel a little better. but havent had a chance to get it on the motorway yet.

 

I've been lucky enough to be driven round Mallory Park by a couple of top racing drivers in various cars on a private corporate track day, De Marcos LM 500, Caterham 7, Lotus Carlton with 550bhp, Ultima Spider. Ginneta's - I got to drive some of them too with tuition - made these £150 Red Leter Day experience's seem very poor. I couldn't believe we actually got round the corners when a Chap called Bob Sands took me round in the Caterham, saw him on Top Gear the week after so I think he was pretty good, racing in the TVR Tuscan class - certainly made me see the difference between boy racer and racing driver!!

MadMark- you say your WRX is standard but didn't you say you had a Prodrive back box? Doesn't that make a difference? I'd love to think my standard 03 WRX has 260 BHP.
Has anyone dyno'd one with a normal exhaust??

I know people who have a ppp and don't get that sort of figure ! I think it all depends on how you run the car in .

A scoobyworld afterburned is a exhaust
There are 2 different schoold of thought on how to run in a car.
1 is to keep the revs below 3000 rpm for the first 1000 miles
the 2nd is to give the car repeated bursts of high rpm's on and off throttle.

It has been reported on a few sites that the 2nd theory will give the most power from the engine, as the first 20 miles are what dertermines the power of your engine (how well the piston rings seal)

No considering my car had 20 miles on it when i got it i have no idea how it was driven ?

Speedmeister - sorry mine is pretty standard, as it has nothing other than a Prodrive backbox.
I know of 2 bog standard cars - one produced 226bhp and the other 230bhp.
I might be able to dig up some graphs as both guys are on here ....

A good exhaust with a Sports Cat or a full decat can add about 40bhp typically, and just a backbox normally adds 10-20bhp.

I ran mine in using a low rev / low boost approach for the first 500 miles (kept below 3,000rpm), kept below 4,000rpm until after the 1st service and then ragged it mercilessly since then. It probably hits 6,500 rpm at least 10 times a day ..... and loves it! Have done nearly 18,000 miles in the year I've had it!

Can anyone tell me what the quoted 0-60 is supposed to be. Ive heard 4.4 sec mentioned and does a decat affect the warranty?

just read your thread m8 at the moment im driving a vectra 2.0 gls goes well till i put on (air con) same as your scooby feels like brakes on drives different any thoughts any one ?

 

Is your backbox the subaru WR sport one? I heard thats different from the PPP one, which you can only get with a PPP?

If its the WR one, how is the exhaust note? Did you get anything else done, or just that fitted (eg change cats)?

I'm thinking about changing the backbox on my WRX - can't afford PPP - wife wants new patio

 

I bought an MY03SL+PPP from new the PPP was fitted at the 1000 service. 3 days later I had problems with the Waste Gate Solonoid sticking and causing lurching problems.
This was replaced a couple of days later and the problem STILL occurs albeit occasionally if I have to momentarily lift off with WOT.
I've only ever used Optimax from day 1. I've tried SUL once due to low fuel on the way home but the difference in grunt was noticeable and went straight back to Optimax.
My car does go like stink and it's going on a rolling road this Saturday so it will be interesting to see the figures for both BHP and the power graph, especially as the downpipe has been replaced now. I'll let you know how I get on.

 

With air con turned on all cars go slower, it's a common symptom toigye.
There is just more power drain from the engine to run the unit thus less to drive you along.
With turbo cars, this coupled with lagg produces a sluggish feeling up to 3000rpm.
On my friends KA, she has to turn the aircon off to overtake! LOL.

on my03 wrx in the owners manual it says

"To improve acceleration and gas mileage, the air conditioner compressor is designed to temporarily shut off during air conditioner operation whenever the accelerator is fully depressed such as during rapid acceleration or when driving on a steep upgrade" page 4-14

 

One "mod" I've already done to my car is take the slack up in the throttle cable.
It may not add BHP but certainly has affected throttle response.
I was surprised how laggy the car was starting to feel - not surprising as I was taking up slack before the throttle opened.

In this day and age isn't it too difficult to install pre stretched cable?
Funny how the simplest things cause what appears to be major problems.

Also recommend tightening up the clips on the intercooler hoses etc - mine were relatively loose ......

 

Well as promised I would post the figures for MY03 WRX SL + PPP + H-S downpipe after going on the rolling road yesterday. I was expecting 265+ but look what I got....

Torque 241

The downpipe has obviously changed my torgue into the car it should be but as for the 260bhp Pro-Drive claim it would have are way way out.

£1600 not very well spent if we go by the figures above. To rub salt in the wound, a standard WRX made 226 bhp. Also, a guy had his car on another rolling road and the difference between both R/Rds was about 0.4 bhp so I cannot even blame the R/Rds for being inaccurate.

I have logged a call into my dealer who I have to say up till now have been fantastic with the slightest issue. I hope they continue to be this good with sorting out this problem.

I have to say though if my car is so quick now what the hell will it be with another 20-25 bhp??

I'll post up what occurrs with my dealer as this unravels
