I had it done about 8 weeks ago - my front tooth at the bottom had apparently 'died' several years ago, although I knew nothing about this until it became infected at the root. Was in agony from the pain - ended up at the dentists 3 mornings in a row with me waiting or the staff to turn up outside the front door!

The actual root canal treatment itself was painless - as someone said previously, the most uncomfortable part was the injection at the start.

All fixed now Only cost me £38 for 3 visits to the dentist and £18 for hygenist, which I was very pleased with. Perhaps they gave me a discount for failing to fix it at first time of asking!

Yoza, Ozzy described it pretty accurately.

Cut cavity to access the canals.
Clean and shape the canals with files.
Sterilise the canals chemically.
Fill the canals.
Fill the cavity.

FYI I don't feel a thing

BTW, crowns are available on the NHS although your dentist may decide not to offer them if he is a tight so and so.

NHS root therapy on a molar shoud cost the patient around 85 quid IIRC.

Don't have any aneasthetic - its much cheaper ... I don't bother, just tell him to do what he has to do and make it snappy ... times money!!

Had crowns, wisdom teeth out and canal work .... no need for injections - feels better afterwards and cuts the cost down. Its just mind over matter, my dentist doesn't mind and I don't matter!

get it pulled - I had 9 root canal fillings done last year after 6 weeks of treatemnt for an abcess - All in I wanted to die for about 12 weeks. I got it pulled and most of the pain was gone immediately (once I got use of my face back) - It was the big molar at the back. I only miss it now for opening beer bottles

Mine cost £300 / tooth on back teeth, going private. Only discovered I needed it when an absess formed under an old (NHS filling. The absess hurt, lots. The root canal was OK, although I got jaw ache from having my mouth propped wide open for 2 90 minute sessions (they pitch a little rubber tent around the tooth to keep it dry and free from infection whilst working. You get a quick bit of pain when the screw reaches the very bottom of the tooth, as the nerves under that aren't as numb, but otherwise OK

Remember all the screw things etc, but being private, she took a lot of care, plus electrical tests and x-rays to make sure that there was no root left in any of the teeth - it's allegedly little bits of root that cause the infection.

Had this done on two molars (back teeth). Neither have been crowned, just got a very white looking (not available on the NHS) type filling on top of the root work, as the shell of both teeth was OK.

Another Root canal question. I had mine done today and i've been told to go back in 2 weeks for the filling and whatever. Thing is, the dentist has only put a dressing in the tooth-a piece of cotton wool!!!!!

Won't this get infected??? Anyone else have this?

I had an accident with one of my teeth, just over a year ago, which in turn I even had to take time off work with. In the end I have landed myself a bill worth £481.50 for the a$$hole to put me through excrutiating pain, infect my root twice (the whole of one side of my face was swollen massively), infect my tongue, cut my gums all round, and give me a crown. After my crown was fitted I had to have it removed again because, by some freaky incident got another infection, so had to let it drain. I am still not totally convinced it is ok. (NHS by the way)

I'd go private if I were you, it will cost more, but you get what you pay for.

Just go and get it over and done with hon, go private and you will feel much better after it.

Although I must warn you, the get these things that are pretty much like 1 inch screws (Actually, come to think of it I am sure I saw my dentist at B&Q the night before! ) which are slightly wider than the hole up the middle of your tooth. They Screw it in REALLY tightly and the yank it out as hard and as fast as they can. It is the sorest thing I have ever encountered in my life (And being from the slums of Edinburgh that is friggin sore! )!

Im sure the perverse ***** get a kick out of you squirming in their chair sqealing like a pig!

I had one done a couple of years ago after breaking a tooth. I was bricking it when the dentist mentioned I required a root canal. Had the treatment done over a couple of visits. It is basically a realy deep filling, they use a machine with a probe to measure the depth of the root and then a wee file is used to scrape the root out. Never felt a thing. The only time I just about %^$ myself is when they lit the Bunsen burner to heat up the wire which is used to seal the root off. They pack latex into the root then melt it to seal it off.

Mixed experiences in this thread.

I will be having root canal in just under 2 weeks. This is for a tooth that I thought just needed filling (as it became slightly sensitive). I was told that the decay is too close to the nerve so root canal must be performed.

I am scared. ...some of you are evil.

had mine done 2 years ago, to be honest my tooth ache was that bad it was a relief to get it done(went on holiday same daywhich could have been nasty) the nerve was dying hence the pain. was'nt too bad just like haveing a filling, took two sittings, one after the holiday. dentist sent me on my hols with some anti-biotics(sp) incase i got an abcess whille i was away. at least she gave me some pills i could take with booze

I had some sort of hard stuff moulded round my tooth, same colour too. Looked proper so it did! Dunno what it was, but if the tosser even tried to put cotton wool in my mouth I would have told him to bu99er off!
