Bandwidth is, despite what the carriers may tell you, pretty cheap. It is just a case of this being passed onto the consumer
Actually I'd have to disagree - proper uncontended quality bandwidth is still very expensive. The profit margins in consumer dsl are wafer thin.

3.8 megabits per second
Communications 3.8 megabits per second
Storage 464.7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.2 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

Don't have broadband at home, but thought I'd try the test at work.

Downloading real time video and service packs is a delight!

You know, it makes me feel all warm and squishy inside knowing you lot have wonderful speed-tastic interNERD connections!

And it is official - had an engineer over, line is fine, modem is fine, laptop's speed when connected is fine, home puter is not.

I'll have it back then

There's nothing wrong with the rest of it, so it must be a config issue to do with networking..........

or the card...........

I'll say no more than that I work for a large global carrier and we have contracts and agreements with pretty much every major supplier in the world. Don't believe everything you're told. The fact is we are still paying way over the odds for broadband in the UK.

How are we paying way over the odds for broadband? I pay £23 a month for 512k ADSL and before that approx the same pm for 600k cable. I can join various freephone dial ISPS for around £15 pm yet I am only paying £8 more for an always on connection that actually makes the net worth using. I am more than happy to pay that and have had broadband for about 4 years now.

Most countries have had ADSL for a lot longer than the UK so its bound to be cheaper. You also have to remember that BT monopolise the local telco loops still (no matter what u read) and this means ADSL as well. In fact is there an ISP that offers ADSL over anything other than a BT line???

Further up the scale and BT are starting to lose out. Many carriers are a lot cheaper than BT now when it comes to T3, STM1, STM4 connections etc. But that doesnt mean squat to us joe public who must use adsl or cable.

Simon.

BTW -
Downstream 4940 Kbps (617.5 KB/sec) 5335 Kbps (inc. overheads) Upstream 236 Kbps (29.5 KB/sec) 254 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Pretty pap from work. Should nip into the POP and link direct to a core router via GIGE and then try it. Probably wouldnt be that much better though as too many bottlenecks to contend with.
