WELL!

By this time I would have had 3 cigs. Today none Although, I am slightly crabby already....

What doesn't help is that Im sat right outside the smoking room Sod's law really!

Just polished off a bacon, egg, sausage and tomato sandwich and could really do with a cuppa and a ***. I think I will stick with my ribena and keep chewing the end of my pen

fresh orange, fruit, fizzy water ... when craving ... not coffee or tea or things that you associate with cigs.

Cool

Have been clean for just over 2 years now after being a nicotine addict for around 15 years at the rate of a pack a day. Work colleages initially laughed when I said I would quit on a certain date as they viewed me as a professional smoker.

Patches helped with the controlling the temper and initial withdrawal symptoms, but finally will power was what was needed with the support of family and friends. The Allen Carr book was as boring as hell, so never got past the first few pages. He is an accountant by profession and it comes through in his writing style too!!

A side effect of being an ex-smoker is that my waist size has ballooned from 32" to 36+ during the period, but is now stabilised and falling through a healthier diet (minimal snacks).

Good luck!!

Suresh

Would *everybody* who smokes give up if they could?

A mate quit when he worked out how much he spent on **** a year.

For the record - I don't smoke and never had, but I find the smell of smokers sickly, and I make the girlfriend have a shower before going to bed if she's been on a night out.

I used to smoke about 40 a day and so did hte missus

I really wanted to give up but wanted the wife to give up so I made a deal with her that we would give up for new year, 4 years ago, and that we would spend the money that we spent on cigarettes on a new car for her, that way we couldn't afford to smoke

I haven't smoked since new years eve 1998

I quit a year ago today!

Reason , had to go into hospital for a knee op and thought it was time to stop. Did the quitting and starting thing for years but this time last year just felt right to finally quit for good.

First couple of months were a bit of hard work but it was important to find other things to do when I would have ordinarily lit one up.

Have no probs or cravings anymore and must admit can't stand the smell of the things anymore (tbh I am appalled that I wasted so much money).

Firstly, giving up is a doddle. Realise that and you'll be fine. Quitting is only difficult because that's what the world and his wife keep telling you. Try and formulate some kind of plan so that you're doing something else when you'd normally be smoking a ***. Instead of going out for a *** break surf on Scoobynet more (more? ) or something. I found that certain cues sparked off my wanting to have a *** so ditching these helped to change the focus.

Secondly, forget about the possibility of putting on weight as it'll give you another reason not to quit. I'm sure you're gorgeous anyway but you'll be 10 times more without a *** hanging out of your mouth

Thirdly, if you smoke 20 a day (about £130 a month) then why not use the money for something cool. You could treat yourself to a massage or facial (oooer ) once a week as a pat on the back for lasting another week. First thing I did was buy my partner a Gucci watch on 0% over a few months. Not sure what does it for you but you get the idea.

And lastly good luck

Took you a whole day before the appeared

Do the math - what it costs financially and what it costs you health then just STOP. My gran randomely stopped from 40 a day and hasn't looked back. She WOULD be dead by now if she hadn't of that there is no doubt in her mind.

Not sure you want to follow my plan, but I gave up ciggies when I was 24, and smoked Cigars instead.

Now a Cigar at 7am is not that appealing, so I tended to smoke evenings only. Then it became drinking only.

Finally gave up two years ago when I realised I smoked a cigar for every pint I had

I tried Zyban once, i almost crashed my car, i was just not on this planet. I found the side-effects very scary and only lasted a week, I'm not saying it'll be the same for everyone but I'm not trying that again!!

Anyway good luck girlie!!! I'l probably be trying to the same soon coz i dont actually enjoy smoking that much anymore,i feel really unfit and short of breath, it smells bad! Plus i'm looking forward to having all that extra money!!<some more incentives for you >

I hope its going ok, even if it isn't dont feel too downhearted if you've succumbed, just try again. Everytime i've failed in the past, I've smoked more than i would have done usually in a frenzy of self-disgust and disapointment (horrible feeling).

I didn't quite do cold turkey

I used to smoke 15-20 B&H a day
Told myself to quit in 4 weeks
Started smoking 15-20 Silk Cut straight away
Was down to 7-10 Silk Cut in a fortnight
by 4 weeks I stopped.

Only had mini cigars on the odd occasion during the first Xmas and New Year - I gave up in November 7 years ago.

Worked for me, good luck

Need to be a little careful if you go down the zyban route. About 1 in a 1000 people have a fit while taking it. It doesn't make them epileptic, and when they stop taking the tablets they don't have any more fits, BUT if you are one of the unlucky ones who has a fit you will lose your driving license for a year (or longer if you have PSV/HGV license) Therefore if your job/mortgage/livelihood depend on driving think long and hard before taking zyban. I expect for most on this BBS losing driving license would be a disaster

I gave up almost 6 years ago. Used to smoke 30 Rothmans a day.
1st week, used one of those inhaler things. Got sick of using it (tastes horrible). After that it was willpower all the way.

IMO, only worth using 'aids' such as patches etc. for a few days, two weeks tops while you get out of the HABIT of smoking. Ultimately the aids are still giving you nicotine (the addictive bit) so you still have to go 'cold turkey' at some point, the aids just delay the process somewhat.

Don't give up giving up Claire! I will have to give you a virtual bitch slap otherwise!

Stick with it. A woman that smokes it extremely unattractive IMO. It really puts me off. I used to make my ex who smokes get out of the car, I wouldn't stay in the same room if she smoked. Kissing was a no no!! I made her consume a whole packet of Polos before I would go anywhere near her. Her hands and fingers had a yellowish colour to them. The plastic items in her house had turned a brownish yellow! The TV and a few other items had a horrible slime inside it! The smell when she opened her front door used to hit me like a sledge hammer.

Hope that makes you feel better!

I gave up smoking on August 5th, so nearly 4 months ago!
I left the Hypnotists and threw my **** and lighter away as I would never need them again. I am now a NON smoker not an ex smoker and you know what smoking really STINKS!

I smoked since I was 11 years old and gave up @ 32 after thiking about it for ages, I got a real case of the flu and was in bed for 2 weeks so after that I said bo11ox I've done the cold turkey might as well carry on and Quit!
I have also had mates who smoked for longer and more a-day than me and they used Alan Carr's book on how to stop smoking and said it's brilliant so we went from a gang of a dozen or so people who 60% smoked to one lone smoker who we all take the pi55 out of and his wife is battling against breast cancer right now after never smoking, so hopefully he will be next to quit.
Anyway if you find it hard get down to Waterstones and save your self!

I gave up 17 years ago, I was smoking 20 a day and was just fed up with the chest infections, cost etc.

I went Cold Turkey in the morning and handed all my ****, lighters etc to a guy I was on a course with (as a gift, which made him up ). Then I got about half a dozen packs of Victory-V's, and every time I got a craving, I'd have one of them instead.

It got me through, but cost me a couple of fillings, It was worth the trade off IMO.

I still crave when in smokey environments and always consider myself a smoker who hasn't had one for a while, any other way and your kidding yourself IMO.

Cold Turkey is the only way, Patches are a waste of time as your still getting your fix. You need to be stong and aware that your only 1 *** away from being a regular smoker again.

I think all the patches, tablets, therapy etc are a waste of time.
How many times have I heard "the patches dont work" or "the tablets didn't agree with me". It's always easy to push the blame onto these things rather than admit that it is YOU that has failed.

To give up only you can do it through sheer willpower. Maybe these other things may help a little but ultimately it is the individual that has to want to do it for themself.
