Not fixed the misfire.

But I did get the diamon ignitor firing the MY97 coil block on the bench. There was a definite improvement in spark quality over the coil pack with the same setup.

So I think we will end up with a wasted spark coil block.

Curiously, I have some info from Motec that suggests a Dwell time on only 1.8ms for the coil on plug coils. SO I am wondering if the 3.6 the ECU currently runs at, isn't overheating the ignitor and causing it to degrade in performance.

On the Microtech I changed from time base dwell to duty cycle base and had to go up to 55% to clear the misfire caused by the inadequate bosch coils. They still run cool !!

Hope all goes well tonight then..

I keep swinging from "Not going to RR it as it is how it goes on the road that counts" to "Wonder how many ponies are waiting to be unleashed under the bonnet, where is the nearest RR".. not that it is finished yet but you know what I mean.

Andy,

The problem with long dwell times is the heating of the ignitor block, as it's that which is held on during the dwell period.

Am looking forward to it. It was a shame we didn't get it done last week, but thinking about it, some daylight and more time should give better results and leave me more relaxed.

Plan is just to fit the later coil and leads straight away. i suspect the misfire would go if we fitted brand new coil packs and ignitor, but that's ££££.

Paul,

Am I reading this right?

You can stick the newer twin coils and ht leads straight on??

Confused?

Simon,

No not straight on.

For a start, Franks car has the later manifold, so that at least give him somewhere to bolt the coil.

THe motec is wasted spark, meaning it only has 2 ignition drivers, it uses these to drive E1+E2 and E3+E4 as common pairs.

Common the outputs and take I1+I2 and I3+I4 to the coil, which has 3 wires, +ve ignition switch 12v and 2 neg firing lline

Good that it can be done though, might have saved me some money had I realised..

Bolting it somewhere is not a problem.

Mole Grip Hands! lmfao!!!!

Well work up a stupidly early time for Sat at 8am! When i finally got out of bed, drove to Robs and then onto Pauls.

Paul and Rob got straight to work with the engine and changed a few bits round.

Then went out mapping. It started to misfire and wasnt to happy as we changed (well Rob and Paul did) the coil packs and the ignitor module.

Paul did some amazing work with the motec and we were back on. Paul was mapping, Rob was watching the boost gauge and i was just grinning!

After quite a few hours mapping, had some lunch late and more mapping on the roads. Paul was turning the boost up bit by bit (by a Dawes Device or something similiar) so he can get the fuel mixture right so he can map the Motec boost later.

Things started to go right. My baby was flying. Bearing in mind it was 292bhp before with about 250lbs of torque, it was definitely moving quicker than before and i couldnt stop grinning.

We had to drop Rob back as he had work but you can see ROb didnt want to go. It was starting to get interesting and boost was great as Paul was now mapping the boost limit through motec and had taken the Dawes device off (as the fuel mixture was sorted now).

One point we were running 1.65 bar and oh momma - it moved

We dropped Rob off and me and Paul went back out on the road for some more fine tuning. Paul did some more mapping and we were done!

Went back to Pauls, was about to call it a night and Paul asked if i was up for launch control - of course i was. Went out to the country ride, and we did launch control. As it was wet, my wheels were spinning but i have to say - i loved every minute of it. Paul was cracking up and i was just sitting their with a big fat grin on!!

So basically, im mapped to 1.4 bar now. It stays at 1.4 bar but drops off to 1.3 in some cases. Launch control is done to. I will go to a rolling road this week to see what it produces but after speaking with Paul tonight - i think a bit more is more to come

The next thing to do regarding motec is anti lag which i will speak to Paul later.

Ive got a few bits to tidy up on the engine to - i believe samcos are on the way

See my big thanks list in Dealers and Third Parties

Unsure on the misfire.

In the end, the misfire was there on 2 different sets of (admittedly oldish) coilpacks, and again, but to a lesser extent with 97/98 coil block and ht leads. Plugs gapped at 0.62mm, I know people have gone to 0.5mm, but I still think we should have been doing better than 0.9bar.

The engine could do with a decent few earthing straps I suppose.

In the end the dwell time was pushed right up, I realise it's not the 'correct' way to do it, but the best in the time available.

Further research will be done in this area, especially when I can get a scope on the ignition of a standard car to see what the dwell time is like.

Wow!
saw the car today and it looks the ballocks!!!
I wont give away the results in case they are classified , but suffice to say it was a comfortable win and the operators were very interested in the spec.

well done guys, its a superb machine!

Unhappy

I could make excuses for today but there is no need, glad it wasnt my money spent at SAS today... Quite pleased with power figure for straight optimax but going by everyones Torque figures today something was wrong.. At a guess i would say that all teh cars today were from 30- 60ftlb down on actual figures, i dont know if this was due to incorrect load set up or not??

Dissapointed with Torque figure as i know it is incorrect.

For example, a car ran 320/319 (iirc) at PE, but ran 320/250?? WTF at SAS today... Maybe a better example would be the 214lbft for an STI5.. I dont think so!!

I NEED LAUNCH CONTROL ON MY CAR!!!!

My Scooby today at SAS = 319 bhp & 257 lbf- ft.

Power Engineering = 319 bhp & 320 lbf-ft.

I know PE reads high but
