MAC vsPC
Its a barren landscape his machine IMO. He never has anything funky to show me, no tasty coding demos or funky desktop themes, his Mac desktop always looks the same.
The "self build" aspect of PC ownership could never be addressed on the Mac side, not now the clones are long dead. Apple are a hardware company, to seperate the OS from the hardware would probably be the end of them.
I think the trouble with Mac users is there aren't as many of us around! A typical PC user will encounter one Mac every so often and that's all you have to base your opinion on. However, we're just as into VCD creation, media streaming, P2P etc. as people on the "other side"
Angry
Mail me offline for your copy of Panther sir
I was going to get into this debate but when i get back to my G4, networked to my PC, then i will sit down and expand.Until then keep up the debate guys. It's entertaining to say the least

angry that Mac looks like a central heating radiator m8, lol
Now this is what 'I' call a case, mucho nicer IMO

class_A yeah that looks neat m8, I'd be even more impressed if it wasnt for Windowblinds, Litestep and a 100 other XP and Linux desktops/GUI's/themes. I do like the way everything zooms into focus, very, very nice, for a Mac

LOL @ Jye. Its not the first time someone has compared it to a heater of somekind. But then again it is very, very now.
Nice box you have a pic of there (no pun intended). Don't like the light though. Blackpool.
Your desktop is a little different to mine

It's like that by choice though, loud colours on the screen can really affect the kind of designs I send out,
sounds like bull$hit but it really does make a difference to have neutral colours in the background. If you want it to display in all the colours of the world, you probably could

Alex,
Since you were helpful last time
One thing struck me you never see macs deployed in a typical client server configuration (or do you?) Its very typical to deploy two or three tiers using PC architecture, The database server, the application server and the client PC, AFAIK there are no broker technolgies (except maybe RMI provided by Java), was just curious. Interesting link you provided about the X11 stuff as well.
Cheers
Gary

Hiya I work for MacWarehouse. Whilst you might think it makes me biased it does not. I'd not advise a Mac for gaming or cad as there is little in the way of software. This is also becoming the case for the newspaper market unless you run QPS. Most new systems are based around an InDesign front end but only on the PC platform just down the the cheapness of the initial purchase.
My mac prefernce comes down to years of using and owning both macs and PCs and I can honestly get far more done on a Mac than a PC. I first noticed Macs when I used to work for a huge OPC resller and noticed one guys seemingly getting loads done but not getting stressed. His mac made him far more productive than us PC users. I was hooked, you see I like getting work done rather than getting frustrated.
I'm typing away on an eMac at work running Mac OSX running terminal server from an NT box and it works fine.
Having experienced both for what I want the Mac is perfect. No crashes no major bugs, a far more stable platform (Mac OSX has NEVER crashed). The new G5 is seriously quick. Forget the Mhz as its just marketing, The speed of the G5 will get faster still when all apps including the OS are fully optomised for 64bit processing. I knwo the PC platform is moving this way but slowly.
I do fear for the day when PCS move from CISC to RISC as I can;t belive this will ever work smoothly or it would have been done by now. Once Intels and AMD processor technology reches its limit the change will ahve to happen and that wonlt be fun.
There is a vast amoount of Mac software available. 6000+ apps for OSX alone. There is ahuge amount fo freeware and shareware and most needs are catered for.
I now would only buy a PC to play games and my last PC was bought to play MechWarrior and I gave up on it as a stable home use machine after I got bored of the game and gave the PC away.
Ultimately if you want to get on and get stuff done and cost is not an issue then the Mac is tops in my books. Don't forget Apple are the true innovator and brought USB to the mainstream, invented FireWire and FireWire 800, made optical mice standard, gave us the first Unix based OS that was easy to use, gave us the first affordable 64Bit desktop supercomputer, the ipod, the first decent looking computer, the iMac, The list goees on.
I'd rather give my money to a compnay that does things differently , doesn't follow the mainstaream and makes quality products that are reliable but with a certain charm.
Thats why I have a Subaru, 2 Charade GTtis and lots of Macs !

PS We'll be hosting an event at Chelsea footie club on 4/12/2003 with both platforms featured so if you are in IT ( not a reseller ) and are interested contact me for more info. Normal food and beer too if that swings it . LOL !

Soulgirl,
I don't quite understand your question, so I'm taking it to mean "How easy is it to create a Mac app when you only have experience of VB-like scripting languages?"
Have a look at AppleScript and AppleScript Studio

a security update from Apple is unheard of (and unnecessary).
If anyone claims an OS is secure and patching is unnecessary, they need their head examined. Everything is vulnerable as no OS will be perfect
Yep there was something on ZDNet the other day about 3 security flaws being found in Panther (or was it Jaguar?)
SG - Im in the same boat as you, seems theres plenty of Dev support on Mac just no easy way to migrate existing stuff. You might want to check out realbasic www.realbasic.com its gonna be the closest thing to VBA and its x-platform.

Shock horror! Microsoft has macs...
Hang on, don't they write software for them too? Perhaps they just write the code and send it to someone else in the hope that it'll work properly

Actually, that could explain some of the silly bugs in the s/w
