Intermittent clonking noise under braking?
Wow!I go away for three days and this is the response!!

Thanks guys, we've done a *big* run over hte last few days up to Sheffield/Manchester and over snake pass a couple of times and I've come to the conclusion it can only be the brakes.
Ron - I completely agree - they are the most important thing (as they were our first mod!
) I'll check that out tomorrow (after my lie-in
) , Magnet's got my hopes up

I'll let you know guys - thanks again, much apreciated!

you may even be rubbing the pads on the disc bell, (the ally bit!) if it's only under braking, it's gota be brake related, so get it checked out, cos brakes matter!!!

Well the day came today when the noises got to much for me poor little head, so i swapped the caliper, hub, disc, pads, drive shaft and abs sensor. no more noise now! but on inspection of the old parts i found the calpier had the 12mm bolt missing from the back and the pads were rocking about:O and the bearing had also checked out.

Magnet,
I got another leg! estate this time. I was waitng to get rid of the bad noises before i modded it, so with that in hand...
I installed all the bits from the blue saloon today except the tmic
Good to have some power back
but getting a lot of det at high rpm and i'm only pushing 15psi
I think its the charge cooler, me thinks they are ****.
Gonna try the tmic tommorow, and maybe the fmic (thats been in the garage for weeks) if i find the time!
The blue saloon's in fecking bits, but thats another story all together.
Hows your leg doing?
Peace

My scoob was making a clonking noise under braking - in time with the wheel rotation.
Turns out it was the pads moving about on the guides. Basically there was some runout on the disc. Proably through too much urban use etc.
I tried copper-ease, which worked for bit but it always came back
Proper solution is new pads and re-grind/replace the discs
But I cured it by a very spirited drive to Wales and back. And when I mean spirited, I mean 'till the brakes start fading and you can smell Ferrodo though the air vents - and keep on going
They haven't clunked since
Funily enough my mates MX5 has started doing it and its only 8 months old! Seeing he's only done 2000miles, I reckon its to do with rust building up on the disc which is causing the pads to move about. And seeing that the rear brakes hardly do any work it would take some heavy driving to clean off the sufaces again.
Refering to CV joints, CV joints will normally only clunk (or click) on aceleration from rest. Not usually braking - easy way to find if its NOT the CV joints is if the noise is still there whilst braking with the clutch in, or in neutral - as the driveshafts are under no load so it would be impossible for the CV joints to clunk.
Normally, CV's would only give trouble if:
a) the car has done 80K+ miles or
b) has been driven with split CV boots (you would only find out by the load of grease on your alloys or a MOT fail)
