the 8.6 secs you quote is the conservative VW figure,the car was tested by several mags and got a sub 8sec time every time.
Having driven both,the Golf T imo is faster than the Sport,considerably

Whatever...
The 150bhp Golf gti turbo is not a hot hatch.
Its a nice, relatively torquey shopping trolley
Drove one before I got the Scoob - was very, very dissapointed.
Gti - talk about diluting the badge
Typical VW - all hype and perception, no substance.
And as I've said before..LOL...they are not any more reliable than the competition. Bits still fall off, and the doors on the 3dr are simply to heavy for the a pillars and the hinges. Fact.

I agree in 150 form its not a hot hatch...
No bits have fallen off mine and i bet not many people would guess it had more than 100,000 miles on the clock. and the engine has amazing potential so in that respect it is over engineered.
I'll let u all know when the 320 bhp makes it go bang....

yeh i find those quotes hilarious - where are all these twisties that you can go flying around -
I'm a regular visitor to Ireland and there are some good roads to have some fun on especially where i used to live when i was a kid
even when the Golf was just remapped with the K03 if would have to be a much lighter or much more powerfull well sorted car that would make much ground on me...let alone **** all over

Yeh the APR stage 3 kit is 280 - 290 (i think) JabbaSPORTS IHI kit is 280 - 360 depending on spec and engine code - older 1.8T's have a better head design. I keep hitting the rev limiter at the moment becuase the power characteristics have completely changed - before i knew i had to change up because the power was falling off as u got to around 6000 rpm but with the IHI turbo it just keeps pulling - the last bit of work jabba need to do is raise my rev limiter and increase the boost to 1.25 bar and it should show 350 - 360 on the rollers

My T5 wasnt the best fun in the world either but it was amusing how quick it was for a big boxy Volvo and the handling was hillarious and you quickly aclimatise to the smell of burning rubber.

I tried a lot of cars before getting my S3, I loved the Impreza but I just thought I`d get bored of it quickly, the running costs really put me off. I also tried a 325Ci (too smooth) a Jag X-Type 2.5 (not really me) and an S60 T5 (really impressive but I just couldn`t).

Mike, are you getting a used one? Mine was a `99 T and had the Recaro interior which VW later dropped (A mate had a Y reg without it).
The seats in mine were excellent, better in fact than the leather electric Recaros in my S3.

mike, sorry if this thread has taken the edge of your purchasing experience, didnt mean to slag the car off, I was just expecting it to be quicker than it was so was a little dissapointed (cos I quite fancied one) but as a package I can see why people go for them and I suspect you may be the kind of guy that gets it chipped, now that I would fancy a go of.

I had one for a short period. Great running costs but...
Drivers window broke, and the other one had just been fixed before I bought it. Very very common problem. Doors creaked and groaned, just inherently too heavy for the hinges. It also had some quite bad rattles and the dump valve was always sticking (WRC noises) It rolled too much also. Recaro's were also quite uncomfy I found... but they looked quite nice.
Was very nice and smooth though.
A chip, and some decent springs would have sorted it a bit.

drove my mates a few years ago, desperately boring I thought...I was comparing it to a Clio 172 I owned briefly at the time. We both agreed that the 172 would have ate it up and how slugish the golf felt. IMO. on the other hand, nice strong reliable car.

Yeah, it is a 99 S that I have just bought and I am delighted with it. The DV is opviously pooped as it gives a nice chatter when I life off the gas, but other than that it pulls a lot smoother than my Mk3 did.... and yes I will be getting it chipped at some point. 195bhp and 240lb/ft will make the car better than it already is.
Oh, and yes it has the Recaro interior. If the car wasn't worth it, I wouldn't have driven from Aberdeen to Manchester for it!!

My girlfriends got an X reg 1.8T, with recaro interior. The cabin is a very nice place to be, the quality of the materials used are head and shoulders above the Scoob, has to be said.
I'd rather be in the Golf for the daily 6 mile grind to work and back (which I try to do when she doesn't use it for work) than my car, also the Golf is well suited for her 200 mile motorway commute to Northampton once a week, and the 350 return trip to her parents every month - enough poke in a sraight line, combined with tall gearing and low down torque its a great motorway cruiser. Add to that its refinement about town its the perfect compliment to my scoob, which is everything the Golf isn't - ballistic driving experience which, due to my mods, isn't a joy in rush hour traffic be it at standstill or 85mph+
The std Golf has the straight line performance of a hot hatch (not the hottest but you know what I mean), but its size doesn't make it as nimble as a 'hot hatch' should be by definition. A great all rounder for the typical daily commute, sportier than most but its refinement and size comes at the expense of rawness and weight.
I think its great, but if I could only have 1 car....IMO

Cheers DBM - Simon Coe is the Upsolute man and I've already been in touch with him.... a touch over £300 for 195bhp & 199lb/ft 
He's in Scotland in 3 to 4 weeks, so I will decide what I am doing about the chip soon....
1) to do it/to not do it, and 2)to tell the insurer/not tell the insurer.....
2 is easier to decide when it is a serial port tune such as APR or REVO as the VW chip is still in place.... Upsolute fit a new chip....

Checkout Jabba and AMD price is a little more expensive 400 - 500
but you get a before and after rolling road report and they will pick up on any problems if the car has any before the remap - your also going to the them for their own product rather than just somebody that fits the product of another company..
