Blimey - A level stds have improved again!
My two pennies worth...
If pass mark %ages have been increasing for the past 20-odd years, thus implying either students are getting brighter or teaching methods are improving or both, why is it that a fair number of univerisities have to put their incoming 1st year undergrads through, effectively, remedial studies?
I am not devaluing the student's efforts. Far from it, they are achieving great results from the material presented to them. The problem lies in that material. A private tutor spoke on the radio yesterday morning saying that in the last 10-15 years the curriculum had been hacked to pieces; refuted, of course, by some politician or other on the same programme.
So, to those who got their A levels yesterday congratulations and well done. But you have been sold short by a culture (not blaming any particular colour, politically) that prefers to put bums on university seats rather than bringing the 'cream to the top'.
This is, of course, IMHO

Considering that the number of students going into higher education has gone from something like 10% to over 40%, I would say that:
a) University has got easier
b) The value of a degree has been reduced by a factor of 4
