Andy, you can get DVI-15pin DSUB (VGA) converters for peanuts. Depending on which brand of card you go for, some even include it in the packaging

Would do exactly what you wanted it to do I feel.

I take it that all of you are aware of the 'issues' that Half Life 2 and quite possibly any other games based on the engine are going to have with Nvidia carss that apparantly cannot be rectifies by Nvidia? Ati have a workaround available for it tho for their higher end cards apparantly

Cheers,

Nick

roflmao, chill out marc ! or take more tablets !

only just got the 9500 pro, 3 weeks ago with new pc.

could not stretch to anything more fancy atm. would have liked a 9800 pro but not the cash to do it and the rest of pc at the same time. (esp the hercules one with the bloo pcb and fan to match the rest of my pc )

so the 9500 pro will do me and the games that are around now or coming into next year imho.

new cards around the corner and next gen early next yr according to some forums i've been reading, so i'll upgrade when these arrive.

i know it aint in the same league but it seems to be running everything i want to run quite happily! if u got the cash then great, i did not

now if there is group buy early next yr for a card

Si: sorry, not really. Looks like Doom 3 isn't out until the end of this year at the earliest, and by then the card (and new m/b and CPU that I'll also need) will be cheaper anyway. I'll wait & see, thanks.

sub £250 and i'd be interested, IMHO there is no point asking who is interested without a figure, cos we'll all say yes in principle then when we get a £30 discount we'll say no.

I think due to Doom 3 not coming out until atleast March 2004 now all that'll be out that needs pixel shaders will be HL2, so i'll need one before then which is 2 months away, thing is that the cards will probably be cheaper by the amount of discount we can get now, thats just my position however, there may be others with gf3's still who need a top gfx card now.

However, get me a 256Mb Radeon 9800 Pro for less then £250inc VAT and i'm in!

oh silly me for not reading the thread, agreed on the 256vs128mb argument for now, but textures are starting to fill 128Mb and i'm sure HL2 and DOOM3 will be, my advice would be if you wanna be playing the pixel shader based games they you'll want 256Mb

if your buying a graphics purely on doom 3 here is the spec

Minimum:
CPU: 800MHZ – 1GHZ (Don't expect much)
Grafikkarte: Geforce 3 TI / ATI 9600 Pro (Same as above)
Ram: 256 MB-Ram (Loading times will make you wanna hit yourself)

Standard:
CPU: 1,7GHZ – 2GHZ (Nice, good playable on medium details)
Grafikkarte: Geforce 4 TI 4400/4600 / ATI 9700/Pro
Ram: 512 MB-Ram (Loading times might be a little longer but not unreal 2 like )

Optimal:
CPU: 2,5GHZ – 2,8 GHZ (With that power gaming on 1024 can't be a problem.)
Grafikkarte: Geforce 5800FX/5900FX / ATI 9800Pro
Ram: 786 – 1024MB-Ram (Nice and short loading times.)

as you see the 9800has no probs and that is with a lower spec cpu, the game is more dependant on ram than it is on the gpu

yes, but the game isnt out yet, Carmack will squeeze every last fps out of a card and by March 2004 there will be bigger/better hardware, you REALLY cant quote figures just yet.

Besides, i've got the rest nailed, 1Gb of Dual Channel DDR at 800Mhz effective on a P4 2.8Ghz with HT already, we know about loading times, thats just life but it IS gfx dependant and always has been!

Cool

Or spend £200 on an X-Box, X-Box live and Halo 2 next year - group buy, anyone?

just realised this is potentially inflammatory - which was not what I intended.

I am pondering whether to upgrade my machine at the minute (I'm estimating c£400) for something that I know will need more spending on it and will be out of date pretty quickly or.... buy a(nother) dedicated gaming machine where everyone has a level playing field and therefore you don't need to worry about your graphics card/ processor in order to play a good online game. Other than a love of PCs, if you're only going to play a small number of games, why spend a fortune turing the PC into a good gaming platform when there are dedicated gamers on the market for a lot less?

Of course, I'll end up spending on both ......
