I think i spoke to Rayman via email. Wasnt your fmic like £800??
I just spoke to disco at Impreziv. THey are currently trying to build a fmic for scoobys. They have built loads for skodas and now concentrating on the scoob.
He reckons the Skoda ones work out to about £600 but cause of the pipework on the scoob, it will work out to about £750 (but he could do it probably for £600 if there was enough interest).
FMICs are just bloody expensive!
What about a really good TMIC - i mean real good! Not like the STIs. One bigger. It obviously wont be as big as the fmic but then again, (as told by a good mate), it wont me laggy

I can't believe that someone in the UK can't produce something like the APS/AVO/MRT topmount for far less money than it costs to import one from Australia!
I'm sure it would be a more popular option for people not wanting to go to a front mount if the price was more attractive.

Might be worth speaking to the guys at allisport.com. I had a word with one of them at a land rover show recently and he was very interested in getting into the subaru intercooler scene. The products he had on display (although for land rovers) looked fantastic quality and reasonably priced....in fact he almost passed out when i told him how much a FMIC for a scoob was!!

I would also like to see a TMIC that will replace the slanty ones on the older models, that cools as well as - if not better than the STI8 ones

I too am a bit of a Land rover headcase, and as was reported here earlier, the upgrade intercoolers for Land rovers are a lot cheaper, I am looking at one at the moment that enables a 120bhp turbo diesel to run higher boost for 180bhp! Cost???? £250... fitted!!!
I shall be talking to the guys when they fit it and will take in the slanted intercooler I have to give them an idea.

But rayman FMIC is about £850 (if its the one im thinking of)!
I can probably get Trust FMICS for about £750 but still, i want cheaper than that! lol

Sorry for the TMIC comment, seems to have got this off track somewhat, so I'll try to be more constructive.
As for pipe sizes, the norm is 2" from compressor to IC and 2.5" from IC to TB.
It would be interested to see Raymans I/C with the bumper back on as I seem to remember that the lower hole is about 700x180, I know Andy Forrest's (double core) I/C is approx 700x220x80, so 600x300x76 is not making best use of the available airflow.
I think the APS Type-R bar and plate design is worth looking at, I'm not sure about the size but looking at photos and the overall volume it's about 660*180 which again makes good use of the available area.

The pipes core thats runs on my system is 2" 1/2 from the turbo then going to a 3" back to the inlet. Pressure drop at the intercooler is 0.2psi at 15psi. Pressure tested to 80psi. The same intercooler is currently running on 700bhp syline no probs.
I am trying to get the pipework made in UK, to make it cheaper. Hard to get decent quality.

This has been quiet for 24hrs so I'll add some more input
How much power are we aiming to support with this FMIC?
Rayman, your FMIC has a volume of approx 13,600cm3, I'm not suprised it uses that size of pipework and can cool enough air for a 2.6L 700BHP engine.
IMHO that size core is just too big for a 2.0 making 350-400BHP.
The APS core is just over 9000cm3 and there are a few ~400BHP cars around running these.
Anyone know the dimensions of a std Evo 5 or 6 FMIC? They can also support 400+BHP (proven quite recently on a scoob I seem to remember) and are not that big.

for 735£ including delivery +vat for five units or
700£ including delivery + vat for ten units.

Bigger (in terms of volume rather than surface area) would mean more lag as there's more volume for the turbo to fill before the manifold pressure increases. Hence why a large FMIC isn't recommended with a TD04

Oversizing the I/C will lead to increased lag as there is more air to pressurize in the system, oversizing the pipework will also increase the volume of air in the system and CAN lead to reduced flow velocity, although larger tubing will decrease the negative effects of flow restriction due to bends etc.
The quoted 0.2 psi pressure drop for rayman's I/C is exceptional, but pressure drop isn't everything. Look at the difference between the MY97/98 and MY99/00 OEM TMIC. The cores are the same volume and the 97/98 is the least restrictive of any TMIC fitted by the factory and yet it is far less effective as a cooler than the 99/00 unit which is one of the most restrictive.
As with everything there is a compromise, in this case bigger is only better upto a certain point.
Also a larger fmic takes up more space, requires more cutting of the bumper and potentially more complicated pipe runs.

Chrisgarner, sounds like you have got a good price on the HKS FMICs. I have been following the thread in general and its definitely done well.
I still wont pay that (well not yet) just in case there is a way to make it cheaper.
So i understand about all the lag with the FMIC. But if you get a bigger TMIC, will that still work well but with less lag? I dont know who does good TMIC - do APS do any?
