Swimming - Is It Worth It?

Don't suppose you live down in the Surrey/Berks area...?
So seeing as other people have mentioned low heart rates whilst swimming this begs this question does this matter? My current aim is general fitness/weight loss.

Whats this % of max heart rate fat burning malarky?
Surely if you were to eat 3000 cals in a given day but burn 2500 naturally, 1000 from a swimming session and 500 from an evening romp you're body would have to take the deficite from your fat stores thus burning fat
irrespective of the actual intensity?

Ozzy explained this well recently Kenny.
Me, I'll link to another site.
"Many people believe that a long duration of low- to moderate-intensity exercise is the best way to lose fat. That's because at an easy pace, working at 60% of maximum heart rate, approximately 50% of the calories you burn come from fat. If you exercise at a higher intensity, say 80% of heart rate max., only 40% of calories you burn come from fat. The majority (60%) come from sugars."

That's what my gym trainer said about lower intensity for longer times to burn up fat too.
And doing backstroke is an excellent way of clearing the pool if you start to drift slightly

Thats good because I've been having hour to hour and a half long moderate pace cycles and I'd hate to think it was for nothing. Of course even if my body wanted to use sugars for the energy it would have a hard job finding any in my body right now
Face it V5.....you want to be me

I would have thought ozzy would have posted here! Mebbe he only fell runs and doesn't swim?
WRT the fat burning zone, my undertanding was that basically it's a level where you're working moderately hard, but can keep it up (
) for alength of time. IIRC it takes quite some time before you start breaking down your fat stores for energy.
I'm exercising fine thank you very much mark! My body gets every type of exercise imaginable chucked at it every week and is chaning shape, size and flexibility rapidly.......I must be doing something right - Atkin's just helps it on its way
Just been googling, and as per there's two sides to every idea. I've found a site talking about the fat burning zone 'myth' saying
Whilst I agree with the pot, I think it's the time taken that's important. If you only exercise for a short peiod of time you won't burn through your more readily accessed carbs to get to the fat. Therefore you need to be at a lowenough intensity to work for that length of time.
All IMHO blah,etc,blah.
It (energy) all comes from the same "pot". It doesn't matter if you're burning a little more fat or a little more carbohydrate at any particular time in your fuel mix. It all comes from the same calorie pool. The bottom line is, how many calories are you burning.
All IMHO blah,etc,blah.

Is that right? WTF do you need to go on a diet for then?
I'm still 2-3 weeks from my target date which is the start of my holiday and I'm the correct weight for my size and look/feel pretty good. Anything extra trimming up from here on in is a bonus
So I should perhaps say that I'm exercising properly 'now' but I wasn't at all
before!

I remember the good ol' days of a training session in the pool followed by another 'training' session in the union bar. One way to undo all the good work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Swimming is definitely good for you - espeically if you do it after a good workout.
I too swam at county level, but due to other commitments never had the chance to progress on to national level.
The reason you'll find that your heart beat is relatively low is:
1: You're not swimming fast enough, and
2: You're surrounded by water which is constantly cooling your body down
If you're swimming in a 25m pool, aim to do between 50 and 100 lengths per session. Do a sprint length, then a slow length and repeat for as many lengths as you like. Once you're used to this, do two sprint lengths and one rest...
If you get bored of this, incorporate a few lengths of butterfly.
If you're not knackered after this you're super human - congratulations

Andy - my other 'commitments' were definitely a lot more fun than spending time in the swimming pool! Don't think I could have made national level even though

They're just after hits!
