For 58K I would have a Tuscan S much more of a purists race car and save myself 10K. In fact if the Tuscan S was the same price I would still have on over an CSL anyday of the week. TVR dont make a compromised slow cars, like Ferrari everyone one in the range is a race car. People say reliability but forget that shouldnt come into it if you purist and enjoy the fun factor and noise which IMHO the M3 simple doesnt cut it against the TVR.

Godamn the "batmobile" CSL is one of the best cars I ever set eyes on!
A friend worked at Munich Legends and took me out for a burn up in Ashdown forest in one, for me an unforgettable experience, such a raw car and quick for an old timer.

"IF they'd change the body and uprated the interior to distinguish it from the 3 series then it'd justify it's very high price. Who wants to spend the best part of £60k on a car that looks pretty much like millions of repmobiles that 'grace' our roads."
Neil Smalley:
"For sure it's a fantastic car with a real pedigree but with Aston's Bentley's, Porsche and Ferarri's(admitedly not new) around that price it's got it's work cut out"

This must be a competition to find out the most ignorant so-called "car enthusiast" in scoobynet.
Just what did BMW Motorsport fail to do that doesnt to justify the asking price? The M3 CSL are hand constructed in limited runs, they developed a rapid track day car and is still drivable and practical for road use.
The E46 chassis is just as good as a chassis from a 996 Carerra. And more stiffer than the kind of chassis produced for exotic supercars that push 500 HP 10-15 years ago. And the CSL model is even stiffer than ever for that revised suspension for more track orientated handling. How much more "pedigree" do you want? How many practical track cars have Aston Martin, Ferrari and Bentley made???
Finally, the M3 CSL isn't trying to be a "pure race car". So spare us the comparisons with TVR's and Homologated turbocharged Rally Scoobies. Pure traditional race cars or "sports" cars are essentially two door two seater machines, lightweight, simple, and with minimal technological assistance. It's just the misinformed journalism perpetrated by some people on the internet and on print who makes out the CSL is BMW's primary effort for an all out track car, when in fact it is a top development of a capable, refined and road practical platform.

Cosworth makes some good points - although the bit about ignorant car enthusiast is unnecessary and ignorant itself.
The problem is you don't see too many Porsche's and TVR's acting as Taxis outside Frankfurt Airport
BMW have a fine sporting pedigree. Their problem is that they are also trying to make mass-market cars. You inevitably will get some dilution of the image if you try and sell the same model for 18 grand and 58 grand. Obviously they want the 'halo' effect for the whole range (after all, they are not making these out of the goodness of their heart), but some people will always struggle with this. It's a nice looking car, but you'd have to be seriously **** to be able to spot that it wasn't a 'normal' M3. In fact telling an M3 apart from a 330Ci isn't that easy with a casual glance.
Personally, if I was in the market for a 60 grand car, I'd be looking first at Porsche and maybe the lovely new Aston Martin (if they decide to make it )

I got one aswell
It just says class, faster than my last scoob, more toys and the quality, don't even ask compared with the scoob.
It Deffo does not look like other 3 series, The bulging arches and bonnet the four tail pipes the chrome side grills the massive chin spoiler the sexy wing mirrors and the option 19" Alloys
( you can't fit them on lower 3 series and the do look different from normal 18"s)
You need the M3 Vin to order the spare parts anyway will cost a fortune to copy the M3.
The scoob just dont apeal to me any more the styling is not to my taste and its too boy racer and MAX POWER. That huge scoob on the STI is horrid.
Its the natural route I know quite a few Evo and scoob owners that have gone and bought an M3.
I would'nt go for the CSL though , just can't justify the price on a lower spec car(no air-con/cd player or leathers ) even though its faster, but not by that much.
Any all cars have a budget bog standard one, 318ci - M3, Imprezza GX - Imprezza STI.
Its probably more easier to copy the STI from your bog standard imprezza.
My next dream car would be the 996 C4/or Turbo or Merc SL55 AMG now that you would really need to win the lottery!

James,
just a quick point the CSL is way, way faster than a standard M3- it laps the 'ring 30secs faster! I watched a BMW testing day and the CSL's were visibly faster than the standard M3, straights and corners. It is also meant ot have far better steering feel and better brakes.

I've had both, and its horses for courses.
Loved them both to bits for different reasons and can understand an Scooby owner buying one and vice-versa.
My theory is as Scooby owners get older, the move onto M3's!

To say that the CSL is lower spec is missing the point IMO. The extra money has gone into lightweight materials etc etc and new engine tech. This is a car designed by engineers not by marketing people - the way most iconic cars are born.
The extra cost of the CSL has gone into the engineering and the driving experience rather than luxaries. This car will be absolutely rapid!
Got one too if i want it but not sure, i can hear a s/h 335 calling and considering have already got a M3cab coming cant decide whether or not to take it!

It's the most focussed BMW M for quite some time, in fact it's a proper CSL (coupe sports light I think) and lapped the 'ring in a similar time to a 911. They will be collectors items and as a technological tour de force are worthy of praise from true enthusiasts.
Just read some of the specs, the price may be steep but for those that can afford it a performance bargain.
edited to add:BMW says that the CSL lapped the circuit in well under eight minutes, beating the standard M3 by almost 30 seconds. In anyones book that is effing quick!
