C - ah yes, obviously I agree with you about the standard car, but who here is going to leave it standard?
Take a look in the members gallery and see what can be done!
At the end of the day, when I bought my bugeye I could have had the sti7, an sti5 / 6 or even a 2nd hand 22b, but at the price they were selling it for and the amount of aftermarket parts available it was a no brainer to me to get the wrx bugeye.
I've currently spent about 5k getting it where it is. Another 1k and it will be 300 / 300 or thereabouts so for less than 25k I have, IMHO I have a seriously hot and good looking car. Best of all, its brand new and I've had the fun of doing it all myself, and knowing that nobody else has tampered with it.
I think those that cant look past the standard cars headlights really are very narrow minded. The rear end with a rallytech fitted is seriously sexy, and those arches, IMHO are genius.
Also, I just couldn't live with the classics interior.

Yes I have to agree with siwrx, they are slow, heavy, ugly and handle like total ****. NOT! I love my bugeye! It handles better than a standard classic (I have driven both). The linear and more useable power delivery has you fooled that you are driving slowly. Take a look at the speedo and get your eyes quickly back on the road! Looks are always in the eye of the beholder, some may think your bird is a pig, but you are still doing the wild thang with her! Build quality is very good, after a year and a half, still no noticeable rattles. My major gripe with the car is the ABS kicks in over any slight bumps, but then I could always pull the fuse.......

Edcase - Whilst I understand and agree fully with what you have said about the pleasures of modifying a standard car to your own spec and tastes, I would never have chosen a (trying to resist all fugly and tank related jokes) bugeye over 22B, or many classics for that matter.
I have never driven a bugeye but did have the option of a last of the line classic or a MY01/02 when I bought mine(MY00). It was the looks and what was written in the motoring press that meant I never even sat my bum in the drivers seat of a bugeye. Evo magazine refer to the MY03 as a 'return to form'. IMHO, I feel they and a number of magazines do look at the bugeye as a bit of a dip for the Impreza.
Ed again - sorry mate, I do genuinely like your car.....I just like mine more.:P

Dont wanna get 2 involved but the classic is what it means "a classic" and i must admit looks very dated now! Bug eyes wiv the right mods look luvly, most have lost there money now, just dont buy from a dealer they want far to much for them, alternativly just get an sti7!
Everyones got there own oppinion its ur choice and ur money there both luvly cars in there own ways if it was my money i'd buy newer as fingers crossed there less likely 2 go wrong, but **** happens!

I had a MY99 Turbo 4dr with Scoobysport exhaust and ITG panel filter and it was 'quick' and a super car .. I now have a UK300 PPP and IMHO is a vastly superior car.
I know the new motor has PPP which makes it pulls very hard through the mid-range, but when compared with the standard WRX I think on the road there is very little in it despite the extra weight of the WRX ... the classic certainly 'felt' quicker from in the car. I know when I used to follow Chris L in his WRX with full SS de-cat in my MY99 I could stick to his bumper like glue but would've struggled to get past .. his scoob has loosened up even more now so ...... I also raced a few standard WRX's and there was rarely much in it
The brakes are definitely far superior as is the handling, you can go round corners quicker and with less roll in the WRX ... the interior is far better too ...
What I loved about the MY99 though was that it did indeed actually 'feel' more like a rally car, gave you that big turbo kick between 2.5 and 3000 revs (the WRX is more progressive) and was much more raw ...
I guess it's all down to individual taste but if I had to choose between the two, I'd take the WRX but each to their own and all that
Cheers

Before I bought MY01 UK300 I also took a classic Turbo for a test drive. The classic had 17000 miles on the clock so well bedded in compared to the WRX bugeye I took out afterwards which had 2000 miles on the clock. The classic felt slightly more responsive, and sounded a bit better, but compared to the bugeye, the interior looked very dated. By just changing the bugeye lights, transforms the looks considerably. Bought the UK300 and have never regretted it.

have to admit ive never driven a uk classic turbo, so cant comment on the new bugeye compared to it. But ive driven a fair few stis and jap import scoobies and theyre so much quicker, though i test drove the sti uk not the normal new shape.

Dunc 20,
As Crisp said the weight is slightly heavier but don't let that put you off, with the much better designed chassis, a hell of a lot more rigid it more than make up for the weight issue.
