Piston slap sound file here. Can you make it a sticky thread?

Would it be possible for an 01 wrx to have this? Mate of mine has one and he gave me a shot of it and i went out to start it in the morning and it sounded just like that but without the tappet sound! It dissapeared after about three min of idle! What do you lot think? Cheers

What oil does he have in it? Hope he hasn't got a 0W/40 in it. It's too thin for scoob engines. He should use either Motul 300V 15W/50 or Castrol RS 10W/60 or Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W/50 all fully synthetic. The Motul had the best oil pressure out of the three on track with the same number of laps, it was found.
It's unusual for a MY01 to have piston slap. I'd change the oil first to one of the above, then have a listen and if the noise was still there, I'd take it to the dealers for a warranty fix.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

I don't know what oil Subaru is using in the UK. The standard oil here in Greece is not very good and only semi synthetic. Even my dealer recommends the Motul oil and says the standard oil is not very good.
There have been numerous threads on oils on the bbs and the top techies have come up with the three oils I mentioned as the best for our scoobs.
The noise would have nothing to do with the petrol.
It would be wise to take it back to the dealers and get them to check out the noise. There does appear to be a problem. It could also be the cam belt tensioner which sounds similar to piston slap.
Let us know what they find.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

I wish that I could put a sound link on of my 02 sti engine thats gone bang - the big ends have gone, now that would have you all crying if you could hear it!
Luckily it is being fixed under warranty as the car is only one year old, but it does make me think how brittle the engines are on scoobs

Ian,
Ask the dealers if there was any piston damage. If so the engine was probably detting which would put strain on the bearings. If this is the case then the scooby engines aren't that brittle as no engine can withstand sustained det.
Let us know what they say.

Got car back today and it has no slap at all.
Worn out pulley was causing some ugly sounds but I appear to have suffered no crankshaft or piston damage. Phew!!!!

St33ly,
Great to hear. Better the belt than slap anyday.
Scooby1973,
Haven't heard of any suggestions to avoid it. It's a manufacturing defect on MY 98s. Don't know if the pump helps, although I can't see how it would.
Cheers,

Hi George, how are you there?
Hope you enjoy your visit to Australia.
Send me a mail friend, don't forget us!
By the way my brand new car has a slight (piston slap type) noise that is probably belt but it dissapears after first few minutes when the revs drop below 1100-1000.
Cheers
