Eldar,

Can I borrow your dog.

Mufasa,

Thanks for the link, the PIR sonic detector looks good but at £50 its not cheap.

Cheers

I did hear a suggestion years ago about laying a few handfuls of the old fashioned mothballs around. I gather cats dont like them and some around the edge of the pond might do the trick.

Don't bother with an ultrasonic device. I have one and it doesn't do jack, complete waste of money IMO. two neighbours to the one side of me both have numerous cats and they do my head in, walking over my car, crapping in the plant beds. I personally think they are filthy little bleeders and am going to try lion crap next, probably followed by a sack full of bricks and a jaunt to the canal! Joke btw but I do feel like that sometimes.

I don't get cats in my garden and have a lot of birds and sometimes squirrels visiting. We have a row of conifers down one side-maybe they don't like the smell of them??

Question

No sure fire thing then.

Back to the electric fence thing then. Whats the legal position if any "Harm" should come to these cats while protecting one's own property and pets?

About the nearest I have come is spotting one pawing the pond when I was driving up the side road next to my house, (End plot). Cat saw me, paniced ran across the garden and across the road, filled with rage I floored the car but missed it by a few inches. I was only doing a few mph in second, if I'd been in first I'd have got it. I'll admit I would have felt guilt when it was dead but the rage of the moment and all that.

Of course, legaly, that would have been a tragic road accident but I'm a bit more concerned about the legal position if any device I fit causes "Distress" to these things.

Just got an e-mail from a neighbour. The local authority classify anything a resident does that causes distress to other residents or damage to their property as a breach of new law that has recently been introduced by the Government to combat nuisance nieghbours.

He suggests that those of us who have this problem, I think it will be about ten of us on our street, write and sign a letter into the council. There are three or four houses who own the cats.

Might be worth a try.

Now theres an idea. Perhaps I'll write to the local council, they plague me becauise the new neighbours to the Hall I chaor don't like the noise from parties. Well why did they think the house was so cheap?

I must have the only two cats in the world that do their business in their own garden.

In terms of pets I guess it's each to their own. Not sure I would spend £1,750 on a fish, but then you wouldn't spend £250 down the vet getting your cat fixed.

I think as far as cats are concerned they are outside the law as far as owner's responsibility is concerned, whereas dogs are the responsibility of the owner.

Our cat's have collars on them, so any half respecting animal gets an early warning and if it's bright enough does a runner.

The water in bottles thing does work, a mate of mine swears by it.

At the end of the day though nature takes over in the animal world and it's survival of the fittest. Maybe some chicke wire around the pond angled at the top would work.

All the best.

My cats dont have collars

they prefer stealth mode

that way they keep the (live) mice away (10 miles of farm at the back of my house)

I still get the mice in my back garden, but only dead ones

Cool

Had a chat to the neighbours this morning, so far I have eight who are willing to take things futher with the local authority.
Next door are away for Easter but he wanted me to sort him out with an electric fence so that should be nine residents.

As mentioned before chicken wire and netting would solve the cats getting at the fish but would spoil the whole effect of the pond and after spending a bit of money on it I would prefer to enjoy it as it is.

Only thing I have done is to make the garden secure so childen can't get on without me knowing. I love to have kids round but don't want them near the water unsupervised.

I've got some spare snares. But they're only for keeping wild rabbits off the vegetables they do make an 'attractive' collar too should the ******* escape with it still attached.
