Look here another one went *snap*- this is very common and the FIAT dealers are as much to blame as the design itself.
These cars were OK when new and covered by warranty but an old one-you would have to be insane.

Sorry buddy but its not 'VERY common' in the least.
Back into mycroft's pocket before you catch a chill.

What do you drive by the way, so that I can pump some warped views on it in return

it is very common Juan(ker)

so there! I drive an old scoob wagon feel free to slag it off all you like. It has many, many faults and is in no way an ideal car. Thing is I don't give 2 hoots about peoples comments about my car its just some old shed I run around in.

ho ho - both you and mycroft seem unable to use people's names without trying to lower the tone. Yet another common trait. Do you guys live together?

Anyway, no need to search for warped views. The FCT is definately more reliable than the scoob. The defence provides exhibit(piston) #3.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. Each is good at its own thing. Just trying to compensate for the rubbish coming from your corner

I didn't say that it was more or less reliable than a scoob Jaun- just that the cambelt is a very weak point.
Please feel free to express your point of view whenever you like. Mine is that an old Fiat Coupe is a good way of throwing money down the drain. They are well known for it in the trade.

any OLD car is a good way of losing money.

My point is that the later ones are as reliable as any other car, yet outperform most. They don't suffer from cracking manifolds etc.

That said, I wouldn't by a 5K one myself.

Have owned both jap rocket and FCT previously. The FCT took some getting used to but planning on getting another one soon. Why would I do that if they were as cr@p as you say.

If you actually have a good read of their board you will find that most people like to try and stay in the FCT family when changing cars, often wanting to change their current model for a newer or better spec'd one. Odd that when you say they're so poor. You'd think everyone would be scrabbling to dump them.

Not at all mate.
Depends entirely on the values of the person doing the looking.

You think because I drive a Fiat Panda that makes me a lesser person? Bit sad isn't it?

Anyway, to get back on topic....
Fiat Coupes - Speaking from experience, You get a lot of car for the money.

Fiat Coupe 20VT

Excellent value for money!!

I paid 6k for mine. It's now done almost 80k miles, has had the full cambelt service (engine in for less than 400 pounds), has full service history, has had no major mechanical problems, is still running with it's original turbo (despite running a constant 1.2 bar), it's original clutch and still draws admiring glances. There are no signs of rust anywhere on the car, yes there was a thread about rust, but in fact it was more a case of "flaking paint" around one of the rear lights!

6k for a car which offers unique styling (if you don't like it then fine), fantastic performance (Scooby equalling - unless either are modded), good economy and if something does let go then for what you have paid you can have plenty of money left to mod and upgrade.

Unfortunately there are a lot of "Scaremongers" who exaggerate certain situations, e.g. Cambelt Service - Yes when the first 20V's required a cambelt change then Fiat did charge the extortionate sum of 1200 pounds plus, but most of us "2nd Owners" were wise to this and a decent mechanic can perform the same service with the engine in for around 400 pounds.

The sad thing is that a very small minority become enveloped in this and continue to preach these old issues and claims to others.

It's as simple as this, if you fancy owning a 20VT, then for the money there is not much to touch it. There are plenty of alternatives as mentioned already such as the 200SX, but at the end of the day it is down to personal choice.

Dear Mr. Mycroft and others,

As some of you probably know Mr. Mycroft is talking about me - the 'Fiat Coupe Webby'. Over time we have all learnt to know Mr. Mycroft. Although quite sceptical about negative comments after his first few posts on our Forum, I did not only get signals of 'my' visitors that he was acting behind my back, but also got messages of other Forum founders and members telling me to keep an eye open. And yes, although always being friendly I experienced a lot was going on behind my back.

And Mycroft strikes once again. Because his but last post here once again proves a lot. Namely, I did not get rid of my Coupe. Why? It was not MY coupe, it was my company car and "I" did not get rid of it, it was left at that company when I left. Which is pretty normal in that situation I would presume. And NO I did not exchange it for a Panda or Soarer (sticking to the same level here) but in my own ways was sensible enough to buy something cheap namely a Fiat Punto HGT. Which to be honest scares off quite some visually impressive cars. And that's keeping it standard (well except for the air filter yeah). I'll tell you even more... I should have kept that 2000 2.0 20v Coupe Turbo Plus because it was CHEAPER to run. Uses less fuel and never did any part fail on me. Very unlike my latest HGT.

It seems to me however Mycroft never really adds to the conversation other than 'Soarer' or 'you and your car suck'.

Fortunately I do not stand alone and someone got so excited by the idea Mr. Mycroft now has his own fansite. Or something like it. If you know what I mean...

But whatever, just jumping in because I don't like it when people tell blunt lies. All the time.

Cheers mates - keep the Scoobynet quality up - ignore him.

Mycroft is a very narcissistic, unpleasant, disagreeable and unlikeable individual, whose only clear talent is consummate arrogance. Almost certainly those outward traits mask a fragile, inadequate core, with self-loathing.

In short, he's got a personality disorder. Neeeds to see a psychiatrist, if he hasn't already.

nah I find him very amusing, I find peoples anger and bitterness towards him even more amusing.

Why on earth would anyone let someone on a BBS annoy them. Its not real life.

anal_lube -

a) people aren't wound up. They're merely correcting mycroft's errors. It seems most of what he says is erroneous possibly through ignorance, but more often just because he talks complete bull. Are you the only person who hasn't noticed this?

b) How did your meeting go?

c) why not buy a soarer then you can have the same car as mycroft as well as the same bed?

the guy who was meant to email didn't bother Jaun as far as the meeting went

I'm not a huge fan of soarers although I guess they have their merits like most other cars

Jaun a quick question: what have I done to upset you? you must be hurting really bad to carry on this ****, still never mind I'm sure I provide as much amusement for you as you do for me.

Also regarding Fiat Coupes the cambelt job really needs to be engine out or it just snaps again. This is very common particularly at FIAT dealerships as they are totally useless. The only way to keep costs down is to find a very, very good specialist.

Very interesting thread (skipped over a lot of the bitching posts though). To add my two penneth, I moved from a Coupe to a Scoob purely on reliability. Well, not just reliability but the fact that when something went wrong the garage was rubbish and could never fix it! I would say the following is likely to be true:
1) Subarus are generaly more reliable than FIATs
2) Subaru garages (although costly) are more likely to fix any problems.

This does not negate the negative comments about Subaru reliability or quality of garages. Nor does it suggest that there aren't brilliant FIAT garages and the Coupe you buy won't be 100% reliable. However, you could proabably go into the Net and dig out figures for warrenty cost per vehicle from various mfrs and you WILL find the FIAT group fairly low in the league table.

Coupes are great cars and if the Internet resources were available when I had one I may have kept it. Reality is that used car prices will reflect the build quality and realiability of those cars - it's a free market-thing. So if you like the Coupe and don't mind the possibilities that it will be more hassle than the Scoob then go for it! I bought myself an Elise a little while back knowing full well it could be a real pain in the neck reliability wise - didn't stop me because I felt I could put up with it given how much fun it was to drive.

Have fun!

Andy

These cars are beautiful to the blind, reliable to the feckless and good value for money to the penny-wise - pound foolish.

My apologies KJ, I was under the impression that you owned your POS, but now it makes sense if some-one else was paying the bills... me bad!!!

Enjoy your motoring equivalent of a Neopolitan Ice Cream... I believe that many a coop owner can be found down on the floor screwing the nuts off a Neopolitan in the Summer. Suckers
