we had to leave early coz we had to come back to scotland

their were a few nobles but the gt2 was far too fast in pickup speed and brilliant round bends

yeah I agree, give an EVO and a 996 Turbo to two F1 drivers (equally skilled) they don't give a monkeys about what the cars are worth, the Porsche would whoop ****! Don't talk about 390bhp EVO's coz in standard form there is no such thing. Unless you are talking about an EVO Extreme S. Still imagine tuning a 996 Turbo up to the max, I think you would be talking 900bhp+

As I have pointed out in other threads and other forums... the Noble probably will never get an MOT... that is catastrophic depreciation... and is it me or does that Porsche (pic first page) look like a bulldozer or some sort of shovel/gardening implement?

Porsches at the 'ring you're 'aving a larf an't ya!

These car are 'ring specials' the suspension is set to give great times... the bloody things almost live there... they should be the fastest damned thing there... set the geometry for the slowest parts and then you will post amazing times... try to see a little further than the end if your noses FFS!

LOL!

A Porsche! Talk about crap cars. Nowadays they have the same headlights as a Boxster, which gives them the same look ugh. I absolutely waste these POS on the road every now and then when they do try. And so does Gerrit on the ring. With 360 bhp! LOL

Cool

Production car record is set by a 911 GT2.

Fastest time by an amauter driver is in a standard GT3.

Crap cars rule

'Production car' is fine... the Porsche has adjustable suspension as a production car, so, leave a production at the track and hone the geometry to get the best of... my guess is that the car that rolls off the production line is set for general fast road use and not for a track... do you agree?

Production car does NOT preclude setting it up for a specific track... it remains a production car...

Perhaps seeing it another way may help you see through the hype...

Even in F1 the guys who have a home track to practice on have an advantage... their rivals have huge budgets yet it is still recognised as an advantage...

Porsche consider the 'Ring to be their '2nd home' and Porsche are fully aware that so many 'car nerds' believe (wrongly) that it is the ultimate 'test' of a fast road car.

So the tiny expenditure of 'gift cars' to various drivers and 'works assistance' gives them a kudos to the naive that makes such small outgoings a fantastic 'return'.

Question

believe (wrongly) that it is the ultimate 'test' of a fast road car
2 questions for you.

Why wrongly, can you think of a better example?

Have you ever been there?

Q1/. Because it is a race track!

The best place to prove and hone a Racing car is on a Race-track.

The best place to prove and hone a Rally car is on forest tracks.

The best place to prove and hone a fast road car is on a fast road.

Stating the bleedin' obvious really!!!

Q2/. I have.

Talk about double standards and blinkered approach. You're happy to allow modding Evo's etc miles beyond where it 'came off the production line' and at the same time try to classify the Ring as a pure racetrack and therefore discount it as a test of a 'Fast Road Car' . Whatever that is. I've seen the videos, there is very little of the racetrack look about it to me, the majority of the track looks like a country road, the only exception being that its one-way.
As said before, modded EVO's etc are fine but thats what they are, modded one off cars. Porsche manufacture and deliver cars as daily drivers that are in 'vanilla' form in the top end reaches of 99.9% of enthusiast's modded car spectrum. At the same time they deliver world class reliability, looks that are a global icon and all in a comfortable'ish' fashion.

Cheers

I believe...###Porsche has managed to keep alive a bad design that is a Global Anachronism that even they can't kil themselves (despite many attempts) It's reputation is such that many people are in awe of what is basically a Volkswagen Beetle for the Ubervolk Its faults are too numerous to cover on this forum... I could right a book... But as you say most people don't buy the car... they buy the name. On that one point we are in total agreement.

Here we go again.
The 911 and more specifically the 911 turbo, is without a doubt, for anyone that has driven or passengered in one, awesome in almost every way. I would challenge anyone with an open mind to drive one and not be seduced. As a complete package it is astounding.

Do you mean that its like a beetle in the same way as a McLaren F1 is, in that its got a German engine thats in the back. I cannot believe you equate a VW Beetle to current day Porsche's. If you want to take it to that point then all cars today are no different from Model T Fords.
Porsche are currently one of the few Global car manufacturers doing well, possibly the only one specialising in high end vehicles. Obviously you know better than all those 'fools' who are buying the myth.
Best of luck "righting" your book.

Not so. Early 996s had the same front end as the Boxster, but newer 996s are different.

But as you say most people don't buy the car... they buy the name.
The name helps, no denying, but year in, year out, the 911 is voted the ultimate/everyday supercar by magazines for a reason.

If we're poking fun at the derivation of some cars, likening a 911 to a Beetle, then the same can be true of Evos (Mitsubishi Cedia ? whatever the hell that is) and don't Subaru make tractors ? At the end of the day, most Porsche hatred boils down to jealousy

I drove a 911 with ceramic brakes and can confirm that the brakes don't fade despite many hard stops from 100MPH. The car itself was a big let down for me. I was thinking of buying an older Porsche myself and this put me off.

Claudius/Mycroft,
What pish you talk, no facts, no reasoning,no foundation to your argument.Little boy's talk, Porsche's are rubbish, Why, just cause I said so.......
Similar Words you could use to 'right' that book on The Problems of Porsche 911's through the ages. Its a certain Blockbuster.
I'm happy to talk about cars all day and not get hyped up about a my cars better than your car. However this whole thread has just been 2 or 3 folks making single dimension statements and then once someone shows a bigger picture or challenges the statement its just boils down to 'cause I said so'.
There is good reason for the cost differential between everyday cars and 996,GT2,GT3 and 911 Turbo's. Its down to quality of components, R&D, Engineering standards,Performance capabilities and don't forget after sales service.

Regards
Cammy
