I stopped playing about 8 years ago when almost all my gear got nicked. No insewerants = no replacements! 
I've always had cheap guitars around since, but never got back into it. Since seeing some of the threads on here recently, i've been bashing away at an old Fender acoustic. Getting tempted to buy a decent electric to save the fingers! 
Hmmmm, wonder what those 80's neon coloured Jacksons, etc, go for...

The 80's San Dimas Charvels are very collectable at the moment.
I fancy one of the 1984 reissue Kramer Barettas.
Available in Red, Black or white (Can be painted as per EVH's in the 'jump' video ).
Real Floyd Rose and Semour Duncan Pickup.
I think there about £500.00.
I would like to add an American Standard Strat to my collection - I have owned several but I never ended up keeping the Fenders.

Personally, I prefer a couple fewer strings.
Flea gets my vote as best (bass) guitarist.... awesome technique and a good ear for a melody.
I use a Musicman Stingray 4 and a Modulus Flea 4. I sold a Warwick Streamer 5 to get the Flea as it is one of the original Lane Poor models and I had to import it from the States.
I pump 540w through a 1 x 15 and 2 x 10 Gallien Krueger rig. REst of the band use Gibsons, Fenders, Parker, Rickenbackers - all through (very bloody loud) Mesa-Boogie amplification.
We are playing Saturday Night (15th March) at Maxwells (on the outer ringroad) in Loughboro if anyone fancies a little live entertainment and happens to be in the area!

just seen this thread and im going to say that John frusciante IS the best. he can do all the flashy stuff but where he is god is the feeling, timing and tone of his playing and solos.
Flea is the best bass player full stop.
and the best band live are the chili peppers. saw them on saturday and they were the best. they absolutely flawed me

John frusciante is the best
For bass players I know Flea is up there but Les Claypool from Primus is in a league of his own. I have never met the player yet who can play anything like him. Les Claypool did for the bass what Hendrix did for the guitar.

One lung, I was there on saturday too - bloody fantastic show - have been going to see them for the past 10-12 years!!!
Glad to see someone who agrees RE John Frusciante, and also definitely agree RE Flea. All in all, the chili's have imho the best musicians in the world!!!

For those 'quiet' guitar moments Dave Gilmore from the Floyd does it for me.
Solo in Comfortably Numb and Another brick in the Wall part 2 are songs in theirselves.
How about EVH's solo in 'Beat It' by M.Jackson ?

IMO You can't beat Buddy Guy for heart & soul in every note he plays. John Squire could have been great if he had lived up to his early promise, The Seahorses? what was that all about FFS
One guy not mentioned yet who never got the credit he deserved is George Harrison, some of his solos were full of 'feel', especially around the White Album era. Brainwashed gives you the impression of a guy getting it all of his chest before the inevitable.
Bass players. John Entwistle, the best by some margin, although Flea seems to get better & better, I can remember thinking f**k he's good at Reading in the early 90's
Also, if your into Rockabilly, Brian Setzer is well worth a listen

Technically the Jazz guys are the best IMO.
Al Di Meola (That guy can pick big time).
Alan Holdsworth (Very smooth and fast legato style).
Frank Gambale (The master of 'sweep picking').

Jazz, although not strictly my taste - I have heard some amazing playing, from which the foundations of modern rock are based.
I used to listen to Robert Johnson quite a bit - could never get round the sheer intracey of his playing. The hardest stuff to play usually is the simplest, cause you can't replicate emotion.
However, I can play some 'easy' Yngwie material. Although usually end up air guitaring instead - remember that?? LOL!!

My mate Miles plays lead in Harry formaly known as Dirty Harry .... you know the new band wiv the very cute girly singer.
In my time I must have seen all the greatest on stage (except Hendrix cos even I'm to young for that lol) and Miles is one of the most talented axe men I have EVER seen.

Just to balance all this 'emotion' type stuff - anyone still remember mr Chris Impellitteri? One of the fastest players around, 2nd only to a guy in an ill fated band called 'Nitro'.
His 'Stand in Line' album is a great album with Graham bonnet (ex Rainbow), Pat Torpey (Mr Big) and 2 other guys.
The Nitro album was real ear bleeder LOL!!

As an old guitarist... I'd have to say that Zakk Wylde is the best rocker around today.
For those in doubt, have a peek at Ozzy - live at Budokan (dvd).
Makes my hair stand.

Blue Murder - What a band ! Great guitar sound !
For me the best recorded rock guitar sound is :
Dokken - Back for the Attack LP.
Recorded using a modified 1970's plexi marshall head.
Has anyone seen the Roger Waters DVD ?
The guitarist on there - Doug Brammel is very good, little bit like SRV / Hendrix / Gilmore.
One of the bset concert DVD's I have ever seen.
