Wife basically gave up work so we could have one.

Her choice.

(Those that cannot understand or empathise with the dog thing need not comment )

Badger - even better, get a woman who will support you while you stay at home looking after the dog!
I was lucky in that when I had to give up my spaniel my in-laws agreed to adopt him. I have always hoped that at some point I would be able to have him back but I guess that would now be very unfair on him - he is now 5, has a wonderful life as they live in a huge house in Norfolk with tons of land. The biggest problem is that I now live with my girlfriend who has a typically-snappy very un dog-friendly Jack Russell. He hates other dogs and I dont think it would work if we tried to get the two of them together. Oh well. At least I can visit Riff whenever I like.

Anyone seen Disney's "The Kid"?

"So, I'm nearly forty, I'm not married and I don't even have a dog?" [well, it's something like that]

RB5320 agreed some circumstances people do have to give up their pets. Aslong as they find them a good home I have no objections. Its just when they abandon their pet. I can't understand how ppl can throw out their pets like trash?? no humanity watsoever.

My granny lives next to some some people who have a dog and keep it in a shed with a pen. Poor thing is stuck in there alday and night. Must get so bored. Dogs need stimulation.

On the subject of cruelty my friend has an alsatian that is so timid it cowers everytime you go near it. why? The previous owners used to stub their cigarettes out on the poor thing. Bloody hillbillies!!!!!!! Scum!!!

LOL this is one of my sensitive subjects.

A subject close to my heart.

I've got a rescue just now. Most people take pups for one of three reasons.
1. They can train them and not get inbuilt probs from the previous owner.
2. They're cute.
3. They'll live longer and so the heartbreak when it dies is in the future.

Our family have always had rescues and for some dogs sitting in a kennel with food/attention/walks is luxury after the way they have been mistreated. My mothers last bullmastiff had had 5 owners in 18months, had been beaten so badly he still had thescars when he died 7 years later. Had been thrown out and left to fend for himself on Skye. Lucky for him he was found and given to a home where my mother got him. He was the softest dog I have known even after all the mistreatment.
I think they should only be put down if aggressive or seriously unhealthy. kennel life must be much better than no life at all.
IMHO

Diablo

When you are old enough to be put in an old peoples' home and our brave new world govermnment, which should be in existence by then, decides that you have reached the age where you should be put down, please put a post on SN to tell us how you feel about being led away to the "Happy Room" just when you are thinking of a bit of a thrash down the road in your STI MY whatever.

I don't see why they don't donate the rescue dogs to someone like Huntingdon Life Sciences. Seems a bit pointless them breeding animals for their experiments when there are plenty going spare in rescue homes.
