tato_dc,

Open mouth with a splitter, but only just protuding into the flange, the Open mouth car was using a splitter, maybe i should have writen that too

the power is also better with a straight splitter, doesn't make sense but it does work better.

Same as james has done, or here,

cheers

wow!

duel pules entry and twin WG's :O

Given the way they open the gas flow is all good, not like a IHI turbo.

This is a rally car ? turbo has inlet restrictor in it.

Jason, if your talking about the original one at the start of the thread?, it's mine! thanks for the constructive comments It's not there to look pretty!

dave, I would suggest you go for an open neck with the splitter, I'm no expert but this was the advice I recieved from someone with knowledge of many downpipe styles. Apparently open neck with straight splitter is the way to go.
See msgofaster's posts in this thread and mail him if you want confirmation.

I just read this thread and it's all very interesting. Very nice mod james

After reading it I have a question though. (anyone who can answer it is more than welcome to do so ) Would it be convenient to mod a d/p so that it would release waste gate gases through a different pipe? (so that you wouldn't have to worry about how the gas flows would join together, because they never would join.)

Why don't exhaust manufacturers offer this kind of d/p? Or do they offer something like this?

Thanks Kotaro.

Yeah it's possible to do the mod you say, it is mentioned in the thread where i say to andy f about it.

I was thinking about converting another d/p i've got into one with a seperate wastegate pipe, i really need to get my hands on an td05 exhaust housing first though.

Give it a go mate and let us know how it goes!

thanks for the quick reply

Ooops I missed that post about the separate pipe :P

Hopefully, if everything goes alright, I should get a 1st gen legacy turbo sometime this year. At the moment I'm just trying to learn about mods, but I'll certainly try to do that mod (and lots of other ones :P) when i have a scoob

basically I think the idea of the splitter is to make of the IHI exhaust housing something like this:

I can assure you that the Wg doesn't open this far either !!! if it did then twin pipes might work, fact is it only opens 15deg, next to stuff all. Garret do the same divider and also WRCar has it too only the WG pivots from 90 deg to IHI and opens from the bottom with the lever in the side, and the WRCar turbo has a much wider divider.

With regard to separate dump pipes, been there, done that, works just fine, if a little noisy, but I must admit that I did "cheat" a little, I was using a 1000 BHP external wastegate I ended up returning the flow into the downpipe, it was an absolute nightmare to map, you just couldn't hear the engine at all over the noise from the wastegate, and that was with a little silencer in there! Boost control is lovely though

Of course, the right way of doing all of this is to not use a wastegate at all The turbo pictured below has no wastegate, it alters the A/R ratio of the exhaust housing to control boost. With no wastegate, all the gas has to go through the turbine, so no issues with rejoining flow You get all the benefits of really early spool up with good top end flow

Cheers,

Pat.

Bringing it back coz someone has a product that is pretty much smack on what Michael has been talking about with regard to the splitter:

From no less than Cusco And it is for the STi7.

Claims include: more efficient flow from turbo back, less boost drop off

Hi Tony. The DP looks exactly like the APS one ie with straight splitter.Seems like more and more companies are going that way.I even heard a rumour that the JDM STi8 has the splitter as standard.

Blimey

The might be able to put a splitter in a downpipe but look at the state of the backbox and centre. Looks like they need to buy a pipe bender

Hi All,
Anyone know how deep the IHI.VF-29 is, how long would the splitter stick out of the Dp for the above turbo.

Just trying to see what i can do to the Dp,before doing anything to the wastegate(boostcreep)

Thanks
