Rover Metro gti more adjustable than WRX??
#32
Well thats not exactly surprising based on the fact it hasnt got the beautifully balanced transmition system using the DCCD. Come on IM, give us what we want! (fat chance)

LOL @ Dave!
i knew it was a sti 7, but there was no way on this earth i was going to post a thread:
"metro has better balance than a sti7!!"
Id of been stoned like in "The life of Bryan!"
Best to plead ignorant, it was a wrx!
John there might be summat in that!

having picked myself up off the ground, where i have been in uncontrollable fits of laughter, i have to say that i never thought i would see the day, where the comparison to a scoob would get to the point of "metro" status.
fair cop though, any car driven properly can be made to shift and vice versa.
funny really, as the other weekend i had a gti metro in front of me, and you know what?0, he want goin' bad!
respect to all metro gti drivers, who know what they are up to as i have to say i was suprised at this things pace. so much so that i saw no point in dispensing with him.
if nothing else, for the fact that i was having fun watching the chassis on this thing try to cope with all the twisties! top marks to the lad that was driving it - i honestly thought he was going to end up in the hedge any moment, but he made it stick with suprising grace!

Always keep an open mind folks ... and above all don't believe all the anti-brit motoring media stuff many "spit or swallow" and even some of the more respected car mags espouse.
Some Metro enthusiasts have fitted K series 1.8s (incl.VVCs) and even Honda VTecs into the much maligned Metro. Be advised, with some brake and suspension upgrading to suit, these babies are well nippy .... without looking "obviously" like an overstated modified car like so many tarted up ones tend to do.

Hell the corner well!
This wasnt supposed to be a scoob v metro!
MG john, that would be cool, vvc in a metro! im getting into the stealth car business!
on the back road stuff if its tight, it is quite hard to loose some cars you never expected to be in your morrr IMHO
Dave H! how you doing! i was down the club lastnight for a few frsmes! beat pete again, 7-3 he he!
Going today for a couple of hours!
and no you wont see me doing the rounds in a metro...well not in this life time

metro could well be more adjustable because for starters its not a turbo so throttle response is instant, also gti has the 1.4 16v k series engine in it and with the reworked front to rear piping on suspension is a lot more stable than the earlier metros
the calipers aren't the 4 pots though. they were only fitted to all the austin metro's with the independant front suspension ***** and the cross linked rears. the reason was that they had to have both front brakes working on each of the twin brake circuits as it was seriously unstable with just one front brake working

Hi - a mate of mine told me about the thread and thought I'd add my two-penneth.
Firstly on the WRX v GTi. The Metro didn't have to be that great as personally I don't think any of the Impreza's I've ever driven are that good on track. The latest ones being MY2002 UK WRX and WRX STi.
You just can't get them to do anything other than understeer, without being agressive. A point perhaps well made by the fact that in 2002 I've almost lost count of the heavily damaged ones at trackdays - including one being rolled at Donington by a driver appointed by IM to show how capable they are!
Maybe thats why IM feel the need to get all high and mighty about the use of their product on trackdays?
However as a road car they make perfect sense as you don't (or I don't anyway) drive with the same level of commitment. Then the torque of the motor and good traction become more useful.
As for trackday manners - My own view is that trackdays are for fun.
Now whilst lack of magazine space prevents a full story being told, for what its worth here is what actually happened. We lined up in the pit road for the beginning of the session. The Metro first out and the guy in the WRX was next.
After 3 laps we were still in front however with the WRX champing at the bit down the straight on lap 4ish I waved him by. Only to then almost shunt into him at Paddock Hill bend - he braked so much. So at Druids he waved me by and gave me the finger!

Phil you muppet.
Come to donington in 2 weeks and have a drive of my STi5 RA, you will change your mind in about 3 corners about SOME Impreza's.
The TypeR/RA is a very diferent animal to a UK spec/P1, especially in the chassis/transmision balance department.

Hi John - yeah I'm sure the adjustable centre diff will make some difference how much I have no experience of it so I don't know.
However isn't that just typical of the wierd situation IM create for the UK. Obviously from a commercial view point they sit quite pretty but given that the UK has the biggest number of trackdays worldwide an Impreza would seem an obvious weapon of choice and IM won't give you the best that Subaru can offer.
A Jap spec STi 5 may well be better on track but then you have to live with more hassle in owning it.

Going off thread I know - but it isn't that difficult to work it out; if any STi v.7 / WRX owners want to send abuse personally!!
Maybe the gimp giving me the bird wants to send some hate mail?!

Not at all Moose, Phil knows what i mean by that.
What hassle is that phil? The fact you get much more car for your money or the fact you have access to a network of specialists who know the cars better than most oficial Subaru dealers or the fact you dont have the agro of IM trying to invalidate your waranty? I paid £9K less than the equivilent age and mileage P1, and mine is a far superior package to a P1.
I can get parts for my STi faster than main dealers can get parts for a P1, you just have to know where to go and who to use. The days of imports being hard to run are well and truly over. You even have ECUTEK software (the same software prodrive use for the PPP now) to remap your OEM ECU in your STi5/6/7/8 if you feel the need, but as the P1 uses the same map as an STi5, some people dont see the need as long as you use good fuel. My STi5 engine is bog standard and has done 4 trips to the Nurburgring plus many track days. I have put 18,000 miles on it in 9 months and the only things to be a problem is a baulky 4th gear syncro (it was like that when i bought it and was replaced with the car off the road 2 days) and a rear wheel bearing getting a bit rumbly (was like that when i bought it too). I can have parts from Japan in 3 days if i need them.
Driving a TypeR/RA is a totally diferent thing to a P1 or UK turbo. There is more to it than an adjustable centre diff. For a start the torque split is 65R/35F rather than 50/50. Add to that the fact you have a plated rather than viscous rear diff. On the TypeRA you also get a plated front diff and a quickrack.
You really need to drive one, you should understand how diferent the car will be to a UK car because of the transmition system alone.
Try doing this in a UK spec/P1 Impreza. (or a Metro)

John - that's mega!!! I've never seen an Impreza on track at that angle without a violent "pitch in" or by using the handbrake.
I have given up on the search for a P1 as the prices are simply a p1ss take. I have been looking for a STi5/6 Type R in Blue for a few months now but I just can't find one - I missed one that Warrender had by hours!!!
Interesting to see how ownership is quite easy and you are right IM's policy on trackdays is crazy - although I really can't see how they have a leg to stand on. I mean who in IM is going to assess people's ability to drive on track when their own appointed driver rolls down the Craner curves (with his father on board!!).
The problem we face in making this car more available is that many current owners of UK cars get so precious about UK Impreza's that it is easy to see how IM thing what they import is so fantastic.

Let me know if you can tell me the where abouts of a nice V5/V6 Type R in Blue. I can find them but not in Blue!! Sorry but its a car mainly for my girlfriend to drive and she "likes the blue ones best"
Anyway to keep it on thread I'll kick off a new thread re: IM....

Thanks John.
Re: Sideways. No the fastest way isn't to have extremes of anything and think being sideways is too much oversteer. But like John says O/S is great fun!
Remember we were comparing to a 1992 Metro. Meet a Ford Focus RS on your trackday and see how frustrated you get with all the understeer when trying to keep up.

I have a question about the STi5/RA's - how do you get on with the gearing over here then. Are they short geared to go to the Jap limiter (115mph ??) or once converted to MPH they are ok ???
I must admiit - i have always fancied one and looked at a few but there seem to be quite a few 'dogs' out there (same as any other performance car too)
btw- the picture is the t1ts
