Which Octane Booster, If Any?
#31
I have to agree with Kev, I have a 99 type r sti 5 and for the last 20,000 miles I have only run it on optimax, and it appears to be fine. I believe that the ecu in this type of car learns what octane the fuel is and alters the ignition if it is knocking. After reading some of the threads about octane boosters IMHO I reckon they dont work, how can a bottle of, say 200ml, alter the octane rating in 35-40 ltrs of fuel? Apparently some of these octane boosters are just Knock sensor foolers, they work by slowing the flame front in the combustion chamber down so that there is less knock. After reading the threads in the GTR register I bought some pure Toluene from a chemical supplier, I have only used it once at a 5% mix, and it made a real difference, the cost is roughly the same as optimax per litre. As long as the engine runs fine with this mix I will continue using it.

none of you heard of Millers Octane plus? only £2.98 a bottle. One bottler per tank, says it raises Optimax to 99.6 RON.
Get it from Demon Tweeks. I had 10 bottle for xmas
Not used any yet though

I also run an sti 5 Type R. I have experimented with several octane boosters over the past few months. Recently bought a stock of NF from Steve after seeing the good reviews. Running with it now over the past week and I have to say I am well impressed. No noticable performance gain but the engine is running noticably smoother at high revs and low gear pick up is good. Knock on starting from cold, (well tested this past week), also seems to be reduced. I have to recommend it as an added layer of 'protection' in conjunction with good synthetic oil (motul, castrol or silkelene).

Just a quick question for steve..... i've used both NF one shots and normal stuff too, i find that my knocklink is less active with the concentrated (about 1ml-2ml/litre) than the one shots. Is this expected? The cost works out about the same.... just more hassle to 'dose' out the concentrated formula.

I used NF & optimax & it ran like a deflated pancake, switched back to proboost, the Torque came back & would pull really strong.
NF is more of an oily liquid & doesn't evapourate like fuel would, Proboost does & quickly @ that but according to G-NASHERS tests not.
Now im confused
