Well i have lived nor far from the old Smoke all my life and you can love and loathe the place.

As has been mentioned, theres loads of very good places to go and eat/drink/party. Quaglinos, Langans, Jamie Olivers place, Cafe de Paris, i could go on and on. I have DJed in many clubs around London and mostly the people have been friendly.

Yeah there is the "OI YOU MATE" crowd, who might not be that friendly to an out-of-towner, but you try going north and see the reception you get as a Londoner there.

The traffic congestion is a pain in London, but theres always a good and bad side to everything.

As a place to live in and work, London is for the young and well off. I lived and worked there for quite a few years, and the frequent after-work socialising and buzz the place gives off seems to be very much a London thing. I still work in the city but live in the sticks now (getting older, now married), but London is still great as a place to earn loads of $$$ and is a great hub for keeping in touch with friends.

Big Sis works in the City and is my guide when I visit. Have been in on my own and ridden in on my bike and driven also, and find the weight of traffic a big pain. I think the underground (from a visitors point of view)is an easy way of getting around and wish my home town had a public transport system as good.
Generally head for the west end and the museums which is top. Gennerally like to visit but wouldn't like to live there. Too many people in one place.

A good place to catch TB

The rest of you should be grateful to us Londoners and our city, as we subsidise the rest of the country through our taxes, contrary to what someone said above.

The south East is richest region in Europe, We ought to declare indepenence, and cut our benefit bill, then you'd all be sorry!

LOL @ ZOOG .
This country was built on manufacturing, Not just pushing paper around. Try and get a job in IT or Banking in the Smoke. They are drying up fast.

Form the horses mouth (DTI)...

"Manufacturing accounts for about 20 percent of GDP and employs about 4 million people in the UK"

Anyone who thinks that Insurance and Banking will remain in this country is in dreamland though, everytime I get cold called, its from India or beyond.

I love London for a weekend, but I couldn't live or work there (or any big city for that matter).

I hope Edinburgh is decent though, I'm planning my stag do up there

Planky

If you can get the BBC to cancel Eastenders forever then you are forgiven mate

Nothing against the people at all Planky, just found as a whole that nobody spoke to you in London and it was a bit unfriendly.

Apologies for being a Xenaphobic (sp) scots ****

And that's why it takes me 50 minutes to get to work in the morning

It's far enough out that I can go mountain biking straight out my front door and not too far out of town that it's only a £20 taxi fair home if you've been on the sauce

Suppose they'd call it leafy suburbs 'dawn sarf' mate

Never understood this no-one spoke to you stuff? Do you expect strangers to come up to you and say "Welcome to London laddie!"

I have been to Manhattan, and no-one spoke to me, but it did not stop me enjoying it.

London's a great place I love visiting, in fact I am going tommorow and have booked to go on the London eye. Followed by a meal and beer! Quality.

Much as you might not like it, I think Zoog is correct. I read somewhere a while back that the area within the M25 is the most affluent area anywhere in Europe. Also London contributes far more in taxes than it actually receives back.

Gary.

Davyboy

I'm talking in general (as you well know) ie. shopkeepers, people elbowing you in the face on the tube and not bothering to apologise. Everyone avoids eye contact etc etc....

Just seemed pretty grim to me

Maybe I'm just used to country life, where people actually still say hello to each other in the street and don't live in fear of talking to strangers in case the are mugged or raped

And having worked in London I found the office environments (various offices..) to be a lot more anti-social than up here. Only my opinions

Cheers

Born and lived in Putney for 6yrs loved it as a kid, moved to Bracknell lived for 12yrs loved every minute of it.Moved to Boston Lincs and now live in Peterborough and hate it,due to lack of money I cant do anything about. I am a removal man for a living and spend quite alot of time on long jobs which I have to stay in the town we are working for a few nites. My sister lives in Manchester who I have visited and stayed at many times and nothing comes close to London/South east.

There is just a buzz,a feeling when I go back to london that I havent found anywhere else.

I suppose home is where you feel more comfortable and we all have different places that make us feel that way, wouldnt London be a crowded place if we all wanted to live there...ow it is,I wonder why???

Super Si, yep if you buy drinks in probably one of the most expensive hotels in Europe, then you can expect to pay top prices for the drinks... you weren't in the Windows bar on the top floor were you???

And if you look at Jack Clarks pic in the centre is the building with the arched windows, I occupied the office behind the biog arch on the left for a few months. Absolutely the best office in the country!!!

I now work in Docklands and there is nothing like the feeling of coming out of Picadilly tube at 8.30 pm on a Thursday or Friday evening.

Also Super Si, why go to London where there are some of the best restaurants in Europe and buy a kebab. For your info next time, head down past the Trocadero towards Picadilly, hang a right up Shaftsbury Avenue and there is a Kebab place under the grey Nat West building. Interestingly you only hear foreign and Northern accents in there though as any Southerner wouldn't go near a kebab in London...(unless it was by recommendation)!!!

super-si

If you're considering Scotland for a trip, IMO you'd be better going to Glasgow 'it smiles better'D
Shopping is just as good, if not better and the people are much nicer (Edinburgh folk seem to be a bit up their own ar$e)
If clubbing's your thing, I can highly recommend The Tunnel either Friday or Saturday night and there are rakes of good pre-club bars to try.
