Found it. It was called "Rescue on Fractalus". I was also getting a bit mixed up with "Star Raiders", which was very addictive.

"Old classic" on the Spectrum....

Gazza Link

I'm sure the link above has the wrong screenshot (birds-eye view). I remember this game on my mate's Spectrum because it was soooo unplayable (but funny!). The middle 3rd of the pitch was sideways scrolling but as soon as you got into either the first or last 3rd it became a front on static view. Which meant you may still be running sideways from the middle 3rd as you entered the front on view, highly confusing if you wanted a decent match!

Ho-hum back to work....

Does anyone here remember this game for the BBC?

'Granny's Garden'

It was the first computer game i ever played(and completed!) (I was about 6!)

awesome! you can still download it and run it with a BBC emulator.

Me and my mate used to spend countless hours playing football manager on the spectrum.

Also used to take great delight going into Lasky's and typing in

cls sys(1024)

which would lock the computer. Then we'd wait and watch people start typing, see nothing happen, look worried, have a look around and then walk off very quickly.... many amusing afternoon in Brighton before hitting the arcades.

lol.. you just reminded be about something..

Our trick for the shops was to write a small basic program on the Commodore 64 to pause for about 30 seconds.. then play random sounds... of course you turned the volume up full and then ran the program and walked away... class!

Or the Spectrum one... Poke 16384, ??? something anyway, locked up the program so no-one could break into it.

Well funny, especially when run with "Hello World" or worse...

EdCase - SPEEDBALL.. excellent - are you not doing it for anyother platforms?

BoxerFlat4 - gee I remember leaderboard on the speccy and F117A on the Amiga... well done..

Hmm.. commandos was cool on the speccy, never did get into Elite...another classic was something like 'Deathrace 2000' where you were on a bike trying to drive at speed through trees n stuff.. hhmmm...

Some I've owned in the past that I though were good are..

Manic Miner / Operation Wolf - Spectrum 48/128
Wings on the Amiga (trying to remember other games.. but can't... used to use AMOS after i moved from a 500 to a B2000).
Bonk on the PC Engine...
Lords Of Midnight on the TurboGraphix Duo
Street Fighter Turbo(and Hyper)/Zelda/Mario Kart on the SNES
Fatal Fury / Art Of Fighting on the NeoGeo
Sega Rally on the Saturn
Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast
Final Fantasy 9 / GT on the PSX
Xtreme G 3 / Mario 64 / Super Mario Kart on the N64
MGS 2 / Teken Tag (3) / TimeSplitters 2 on PS2
Super Mario Sunshine / TimeSplitters 2 on GameCube

I missed loads but having trouble remembering!.. oh damn.. just realised where all my money has gone in the past... Rss!
