READ THIS For Sale -- Bad Experience !!

woodster1, you came back with a very similar response to the guy who messed me about.
You broke a deal and were not fair to the guy. people seem to think that because they have a sob story about their circumstances that excuses sticking to a deal and doing what you said you would do. Not in my book it doesnt. If you agree to do something you should stick to it, no matter what the circumstances.
Maybe i am too old fashioned for the 21st centuary and this "look after number1! crap we have to live with.

Like Woodster says, it's very rare to buy or sell a car privately without getting messed about at least a little. By rights, 555 should have had first refusal but if someone comes along and has a wad of cash, I would say that it's going to be hard to wait on a promise. I mean, how many times have buyers not turned up to view a car as arranged? I think 555 is right to be annoyed about a wasted journey, but I am afraid that it's a case of *such is life*.

The guy was not just saying look after no1 but was looking after his family, and anyone with kids will know that to turn down cash in the hand, on the say so of someone you have never met would be just daft, it would not be doing the best by your family and ultimately your responsibility as a parent to do this.
I know it dont make it fair, but if you yourself had a 2nd child on the way, would you turn down money you could well do with? If yes then maybe you are more afluent than some people and would never find yourself in this position of having a forced sale anyway, but to those people who are in this position what would you suggest they do?
Having principals is all well and good but at what point do you say, hang on they are not my priority in life, my family is.

ROTFLOL @ Edge Crusher....do you normally get this angry not even knowing the person Someone else is refering to? Looks to me as you are the one that needs to grow up my son!
Perhaps you have been named and shamed before for doing this very same thing and have something to prove to us moral people who stick to verbal deals??
Well speak up little boy

As you had so many people calling about your car, you IMHO you should have waited. (however maybe I am to honest too)
As you got £200 more that you thought you might, as a gesture of goodwill you could offer to pay his petrol as suggested above) if you are that concerned about it.

Or give him the £200 as compensation for his wasted time. You were prepared to accept £6,500 and I can understand the 'bird in the hand' versus the person who may never turn up. You got £200 more than you expected -- either give it to 555 or split the difference, IMHO

Thank you Demon Dave, Ian 555 and Proper Charlie. I'm not asking for people to join sides but it is nice to see that some people realise the predicament I was in. I also appreciate the negative comments which are justified in some respects.
However it's just a shame that there is a small minority on here find that it's a great place to slag people off whom you know nothing about. I might be a nice guy, I might be a t*sser (and some of u seem to think), I might even be a mad alcholic axe murder, but at the end of the day unless you have met me you don't know. Please think about it?

What!! How rude are you! I could afford a scooby at the time but the cost of owner ship is to much to justify with a new baby on the way. I'm sure even scooby 555 would agree that there comes a time when u have to make difficult descisions and to me my family come first! £6000 will make a lot of difference to mine (and most other peoples) family as will the cut in insurance costs.

No, but i will say it again. I have a family to support and there was no guarantee that upon viewing the car 555 would have bought it. If you read my post I DID NOT do this on purpose and had no intention on messing anybody around. I feel bad about what happened and have appologised publicly that fact. I have myself lost out on cars before but I have never heard of anyone getting compensation....if it upsets you that much then maybe you could put a collection together!
I am sorry....I wish it hadn't happened, If I could go back in time I'd have done things differently...I've said it - end of story.

Can we let this one go now.
Both sides have spoken. Views have been aired and I think this would be a good point to park it without it getting out of hand
I understand 555's disappointment ... but the phrase "it wasn't meant to be" comes to mind and the right car for him is still out there
and being with a family myself I know how had it is to justify scooby ownership, it gets more expensive each year.

Time to close this forum, thank you all apart from Edge Crusher, can I add at the age of 40 my ***** have dropped and the Scooby was to be my second car!!
Woodster [ simon] It is time to move on, I accept your predicament albeit I would have kept to the agreement myself, thanks for explaining it better.
I hope you can see that I was mature enough not to slag you off or name you.
I really do feel enough has been said before it turns into a Muppet show.
I will find another car -- I am dissappointed but as stated Life Goes On it's not the end of the world.

For future reference...
If you are travelling a long way to view a car, try and make an elentronic transfer of say £100. This is a deposit subject to tests etc.
You must be serious to be travelling a fair distance so you've no doubt spoken at length about the car, so in theory if it's as described you'd buy it. In this case the price was even set in advance.
That's my opinion of course.

Go on then, explain the relevance of a picture of his daughter to a debate on whether its correct that having agreed a buyer has first refusal on a car, you sell it to someone else just before they get there after a 2.5 hour journey ?
If you could keep the debate on-topic and abuse free I stand a much better chance of understanding your view point - and Webmaster will be much happier

Carl,
No, make a CHAPS payment it should clear same day.
The idea being this guy first phoned on Thursday and went to view the car saturday - he could even have got the sellers bank details and deposited the cash in his account, this clears the same day. So plenty of time to go to the cash point...

A relatively mature way of resolving what cold have turned into a bitter dispute.
The fact that I think that you have a child on the way is entirely beside the point is not gonna change anything.
Mr555 - it wasn't meant to be mate. Best way to look at it, and good luck with continued scooby searching
