What a great post.

I'm 23 with a cossie, which I've had since I was 21. My brother also has one and he's 20.

We both work damn hard to afford to keep these cars going , and don't drive everywhere like idiots.

I think it boils down to this. When you're young, you do drive fast, almost everywhere. Then you get to an age where you realise you don't have to be a racing driver on the roads all the time. This, in my experience either comes as a result of an accident and the cost involved, or points incurred and the cost involved.

Occasionally, there are those people who did drive too quick, and when maturity kicks in, realise the difference between going quick, and inappropriate speed.

The scoob will pull through as it still commands a decent price tag in most areas, Try owning a cossie, and seeing the derogatory comments you get!

Whats wrong with a 17 year old driving a scooby ?

i'm 17 and have enough to buy a MY99 impreza wrx! all my own money and NOT from parents (just incase your wondering how i have 10k to blow on a car at 17 : i made about 8k a few months back trading on the stock market).

eversince i remember i have loved scoobs.

I'v driven my parents merc c200k a few times and never crashed it yet everyone told me that it would be to fast for me to handle.

Once i purchase a scoob i would get comprehensive trackday training !!!

So why is it that everyone says i shouldnt buy one ??? should i buy a 1.1 fiesta instead ?? lol !

tell me this : if you had a chance to buy a wrx at 17, would u buy a fiesta instead ???

Do i sense a wind -up wrxboy ?? I cant resist it anyway..
in for a biscuit....

Thers's nowt wrong with a seventeen year old driving a Scooby,
or any performance car. Providing he has the driving experience,
& maturity to handle it.
If you havent, i would say you would probably be an accident
just about to happen. (and i dont wont to be on the other end of it)
I'm not saying 17 y/olds are BAD drivers; ive pulled a couple of stunts in the past, (i'm not proud of them, i didnt cause an accident,) but i learnt from them. I now drive defensivly.
This has probably saved me from being involved in; say a dozen accidents in the last year. ( i do about 25k a year)
But the average seventeen year old would not last long in a scoob.

no this is not a wind up.

its just the fact that i dont like the way people say that you should start of with a 1.0 litre peice of crap, why ?

If i dont buy a powerfull car i will drive around in my parents 163bhp merc c200 kompressor, which most people say is also way too fast, although i learnt to drive on that car and it aint the easiest of cars to drive (it has a parking brake instead of a handbrake and is a manual version) but i still can easily control it. hence me buying something slower than that would be pointless.

I don't tend to take many risks while driving, i tend to keep well within my limits and the cars/road conditions.

you may think i'm your average 17 year old so called "boy racer" although i have a very mature atitude towards driving and i understand that a wrx is very powerful but i certainly would get comprehensive track day training to learn more about the cars handling.

One other reason is that i might not be lucky in the future financially as i trade a lot in the markets and if i dont buy a scooby or another fast car i would invest that money and have the chance of loosing it all.

I know for a fact that my driving attitude is much more grown up than a few performance car driving friends of mine who are over 21.

I also believe that you are more likely to crash a crappy car as it will take longer to slow down in one and you would generally tend to thrash it more.

Cool

hi wrxboy.
Its certainly not for me to put a downer on you getting one.
I just have this picture in my head of the way some younger drivers; drive their cars; and substitute the Nova for a scoob.
But i certainly shouldnt stereotype.

If you are, do it before you get married & have kids.
Just look at the guys on here that sell theirs cos they buy
a new house, have a new sprog etc

got any tips for the market ??

I Blame the parents.......

was initially taught to drive by my old man, at the time he had a manta (120bhp was a lot in the eighties as soon as i passed my test at 17, i put more miles on it than he did, until i could afford my own,i treated his(and any other company car that i borrowed) with respect, knowing that i would not get the use of the car again at best,or a severe kicking, so no heroics on my part in his pride and joy.

i also competed in club autotests, from the age of 15,so i would like to thing my car control was superior to other 15/16/17 yearolds at the time(i still think this should be part of the driving test!!) most of this was done in other club members cars, who thought nothing of lending me rally prepped asconas/mantas/escorts etc(and once using my personal holy grail an opal kadette "c" gte!!)

not all kids are nutters(apart from the music blaring type, who all sound like they are listening to speeded up sh1te ),but i suspect that in "x" years time when there is a new faster machine on the go,that in "x" + 6 years we will all be saying the same as now.
i am sure this has happened with all other performance cars,

my point af all this is....

If you dont like the image of the scoob,go and buy somthing else,no one will think anything less of you for doing so!!!!

regards
dave

Yeh trade options and futures, its the best way in the current dodgy world financial markets state. I tend to do day trading as i'm a bit weary of long term trading at the moment if you know what i mean.

nice one

if your parents buys you fast without any hard work of yours, you don't really car if you crash it or blow it etc. as they will buy you another one, so you drive senseless

if I crash (shiver in the spine) all those years of hard work and saving....

and yes I take an advantage of the power

so at the end of the day it's what feeling you have for the metal box which can go fast or the child of your family which you call Scooby...

lol am I talking nonsense
just like this thread as all replies are genuine

I too agree! Been labeled as a "boy racer" by a whole lot of people. And its just the car that does it. If i owned say a Mini Cooper S (or another sporty type car, civic type-r etc) would i be a boy racer then? Maybe, but to be completely honest i couldn't give two ***** what other people think of my car or my driving. I surely dont drive like a *** but on the odd occasion i do drive fast and if that makes me a *** then so be it.

@ 25 with an RB5 and now a P1 most people look at me and label me as a W4nk3r and thats pure jealously talking mefinks, i've had damage done to previous cars just because i'm young and own a fast, mint car that some 30+ year old people cant afford (no disrespect to the older generation scoob owners here). It used to make me angry but i try harder now to just turn a blind eye to it all. Life is stressful enough without making it any worse than it already is!

My 2p worth i guess!

Wrxboy,
why start out in a 1ltr when you can have a scoob?
Ermmm
Well, basically your more likely to have an accident in a car thats not as forgiving as a 1ltr well balanced fiesta for instance, trackday training will also not teach you to look out for hazards on the road that young and inexperienced drivers are not expecting this is the reason that people say start with a low powered car etc, not because you can buy a fast car but because having a fast car will mean that the hazards that are out there will be getting there much quicker and you havnt anticipated them (thus accidents happen )
Please also dont say about faster reaction times Michael Schumacher proved this to be a myth with Clarkson (both had equal reaction times but M.S. is a much better driver because he expects the unexpected )

Well I'm the opposite. At the age of 44 I'm STILL a boy racer. I don't try to be, it's just that I always rise to to the bait every time some young tosser tries it on. Maybe they just want to see how fast an Impreza can go. Well I show 'em. I'm not ashamed of it either. One thing though I'd never do it in a built up area.

D Noble, were you in the East Ayrshire car car club by any chance?

Cool

I guess I look at it from the other point of view. I'm 55 and have been driving Scoobs for the past 4 years - most of the time as fast as the road conditions will allow. When I was 21, everytime I saw a 50'ish guy driving a fast car, I used to think "what the hell is that guy doing driving that ?"

Well - now I know !!!
