SAP is a company and the name of the product they produce.
It is correctly pronounced ess-ayy-pee. It is actually an acronym for System, Application and Products in data processing.
The company is currently 29 years old and was founded by 5 former IBM employees.
The software was originally focused at Financials for manufacturing. It has established itself as one of the leader (current market share is larger than competitors) of the products formally known as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).
Now it covers areas from:
Financials, Inventory Management, Warehouse Management, Human Resouces, Payroll, Logisitics, Production Planning, Plant Maintenance.
It also covers:
Supply Chain Management, CRM, ESS, Portals, e-Procurement and Business to Business processing.
It is able to operate in multiple languages and in different lagnuage scripts (including Japanese). It is capable of operating with multiple currancies and as a 24/7/365 system.
It was certified Y2K compliant alsmost as soon as the certifications became available.
The original company SAP AG is based out of Walldorf in Germany and SAP AG employees around 10,000 people. The whole of the SAP group employees around 27,000 people worldwide.
SAP also has several partner organisations for development and implementations of the systems.
The current system is known as R/3 which does not stand for Release 3 (a common mistake) but actually Real-time 3 tier architecture. This system runs on a client-based system.
The client list is very expansive.
I hope that answers any questions.

SAP has several layers. The Basis System is the heart of the data operations and should be not evident to higher level or managerial users. Other customizing and implementation tools exist also. The heart of the system from a manager's viewpoint, are the application modules. These modules might not all be implemented in a typical company, but they are all related and are listed below:
FI Financial Accounting
Financial Accounting -- is designed for automated management and external reporting of general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable and other sub-ledger accounts with a user defined chart of accounts. As entries are made relating to sales production and payments journal entries are automatically posted. This connection means that the "books" are designed to reflect the real situation
CO Controlling
Controlling -- represents the company's flow of cost and revenue. It is a management instrument for organizational decisions. It too is automatically updated as events occur.
AM /AA Asset Management/Asset Accounting
Asset Management--is designed to manage and supervise individual aspects of fixed assets including purchase and sale of assets, depreciation and investment management.
PS Project System
Project System -- is designed to support the planning, control and monitoring of long-term, highly complex projects with defined goals.
WF Workflow
Workflow -- links the integrated SAP application modules with cross-application technologies, tools and services
