Bamba - 4 wheel drive doesn't necessarily give you better 'handling' (and I put that in quotes because handling is a composite, non-defined word, which may or may not include steering feel, turn in, stability, ride etc etc). What 4wd does give is better traction, which in turn can lead to better handling.

It also gives more cornering grip.

Early morning Scooby update.

I shall be away visiting for the weekend in the West Country and my hosts have promised to take me to a Scooby garage they know of. It is in Yeovil I am told. This will provide a welcome interlude to the tedious task of munching canapes, drinking Champagne and making small talk. I look forward to it.

My friend has computing technology, so I will be able to update you on my findings and, if I may, ask some pertinent questions if they should arise.

I have tasked Oddjob with seeking out some local garages today (much to his displeasure I add), so instead of a day spent in semi-recumbence with motoring magazines, I hope to actually see some cars.

I am already practising saying: "Awright chief, got any decent motors then? Gis a look mate".

I am hoping this will endear the tradesman to me. Well, either that or I will be leaving in hurried fashion with my tweeds inserted in some surprising places.

See you this evening.

Kind regards,
Bamba.

Bamba,

Welcome to the Scoobynet
Your written etiquette is like a breath of fresh air on these shores. (Not than I’m slagging everyone else here.) But I laughed from start to finish once I’d grasped the use of a dictionary!

Being a Yorkshire bloke (chap to you) myself, its not often I hear such use of voluptuous vocabulary.

Priceless start to finish.

BS.

Bamba - If you are the person you claim to be then may I offer my apologies for what was a needless poke about grammer, and also welcome you to the BBS. As you have already pointed out, language is a tool for communication, so it is entirely acceptable to use any form of wording to get your point across. This place has an expert on everything, so I'm sure you you will find all you need to know. You may find that the majority of people here may be slightly biased towards scoobs, but they are entirely correct. Good luck with your weekend and give my best regards to oddjob

Fast Bloke - come on, do you really think we are addressing the real 'Bamber' Gascoigne here - the guy that used to host 'University Challenge' before Jeremy Paxman got the job??

Anyway - Bamba - you're very welcome old chap. Good luck with your search for a suitable 'horseless carriage'....

Fast - Good point. His name may very well be Bamba Gascoigne, after all. I was only concerned that you thought he was 'the' Bamber Gascoigne...

Why don't we ask the erudite man himself to step forward and clear up the confusion.

Bamba - where are you? Why aren't you on the telly any more?

Well, it's lovely to see English being used rather than slashed to pieces in a text message.

Two points though, Bamba; firstly, you mentioned "bloviate". I've looked this up in two massive English dictionaries (one of them being the OED CD-ROM) and can't find it. Care to enlighten us, or are you using progressive English (ie making it up) rather than traditional English at this point?

The other puzzle was that you talked about "automotive erotica". You may care to see the film "Crash" on this topic. Otherwise, your Freudian slip may be corrected to "automotive exotica", which will gain you more friends, though on a less intimate level.

Best regards, stick around (though again without use of solvents )

I just spent the last hour searching the Web to find out what a 'Scooby' was and spent an inordinate amount of time with some anoraks who were passionate about the old cartoon.

There is only so much of that one can take and I was running low on Prozac, so I was delighted to find this site (via the Evo site) and I am now happily enlightened to the fact that a 'Scooby' is a Subaru.

Kindest regards,

It was mentioned that Bamba's email address (on another site) was root@xxxx.com. Now a few years ago there was a character who called himself Henry Root who wrote to all and sundry to see what reactions he could get. I have one of the amusing books in which he published the letters and replies. Is this Henry bringing his techniques up-to-date?

First, a starter for ten. I am not the Mr Gascoigne of University Challenge fame. I am a Mr Gascoigne who acquired Bamba (spelt as such) as a nickname many years ago. Neither am I Henry Root, although from what Mr XRS says, he seems to have a rather fascinating pastime.

Before anyone asks, my inside leg measurement and the gusset strength of my undergarments are pieces of information I feel it would be fruitless - and a little shocking - to impart. Suffice it to say that I am not a dwarf, nor a transvestite and I have no erotic proclivities beyond those that would be considered normal in today's society.

Now to the business of cars.

A young chap who claims to be a relative of mine took me out for a drive in his Porsche today. It was a 'Boxster S' and seemed to be a rather nice vehicle. The business of driving fast is something I hope I shall grow into as today's ride throughly frightened me and my toupe has not been the same since.

The fright subsided after a while and I began to enjoy the occasion, thus convincing me that the purchase of a fun car might offer the pleasures I had anticipated. Naturally I still had Oddjob work the young whipper-snapper over for causing me to ululate in an ungentlemanly fashion as we took corners at seventy but, in general, I would describe the day's outing as a success.

This, however, has not moved me any closer to the purchase of a vehicle for myself, but it has convinced me that there is more to cars than simply getting from A to B.

I now feel in dire need of some Prozac so I will take my leave and join you all later, clad in smoking jacket and sipping upon the best claret that Oddjob can muster from the cellars.

Kind regards,
Bamba.

Oddjob has perused the map and we are about to leave for the West Country. I hope to be there for lunch, but Oddjob continues to prevaricate about the route we will be taking, muttering much about tractors, queues and - for inexplicable reasons - Fishguard. It seems we will be embarking upon one of Oddjob's legendary short-cuts, which is always something of a worry.

I shall be attempting to view some Scoobies this afternoon at Yeovil and shall report back this evening from my host's computer (one presumes they now have electricity in the West Country).

If any of you West Country Scooby owners see a white Rover with a tweed-clad individual - concomitant with fetching cravat - waving furiously from the car, then you can be fairly sure it will be me. If we are spotted anywhere near Fishguard, then please be decent enough to flag down Oddjob and tell him just how lost we are.

I wish you all a pleasant day,

Bamba (a man who can now tell a P1 from an STI)

I have seen some Scoobies at last, although I did not spend as much time admiring them as I would have liked. My host seemed impatient with my new automotive interests and it would have been rude to press the matter.

The Scooby I was particularly interested in had modifications to its exhaust system and its ECU (which I thought was a currency). The explanations presented to me about the activities of said modifications may as well have been in a foreign language for all I understood about them, but they sounded jolly impressive from the bits I did pick up between the tradesman's macaronic babble.

Oddjob smiled anyway, and he has not done that since his mother-in-law was savaged by the family's Alsatian.

The remainder of the weekend was a tedious bore and I spent most of the time drawn between the seneschal's grumbling about modern art and his wife's flirtatious attentions. She has been on more laps than a napkin and I have no wish to include my own tweed-clad midriff amongst her conquests.

At length I am pleased to be back amongst my own accoutrements and have returned to my standard semi-recumbent position atop the chaise longue for most of the day. It is from here that I have been planning my next step towards evoness (impressed?). It seems likely that this will involve an automobile by the name of TVR.

If any of you kind chaps could find the time to say a word or two about TVRs to help my preparations I would be most grateful.

Kind regards,
Bamba (one man who now knows that 'de-cats' have more to do with de cars than de dogs)

I've only ever "lurked" on this board for the last few years (since I ordered a MY99 but gave up after waiting over a year for it).

However, having read most posts in all that time I nominate these posts by Bamba as the most amusing I have read. It even beats a lot of the classic muppet ones!

No disrespect Bamba old chap. What a refreshing change to have someone posting on the internet with a highly developed sense of humour and the ability to demonstrate a fine grasp of written language.

I shall await your future postings with great anticipation.

PS what strength Prozac do you use as I find two of the 20mg tablets per day about right?

I also have a comprehensive grasp of the English language and your topic title has led me to reply thus:
