You could always try a PUSH BIKE, it takes me 1hr 40mins on my bike from B' Stortford to Bow (E3), ie, it's quicker to go from home to work by bike than to walk to the station, train to Liverpool Street, and then back out to Bow on the District Line

Stansted Mountfitchet is the last place you can get a seat on before all the ravening hoardes descend at stortford - it's like a kind of natural selection - the strongest and fittest push to the front, while the elderly and infirm have to stand.

I used to bike it in from stortford to the city (the motor variety) and to be honest it took me slightly longer inweard bound than the train - but parking is just a joke now that every tw*t turns up on scooters...
