Good points there Carl. I have no idea. Thought the pics may have helped. Just for some info the HSV Group A was wind tunnel tested and also developed Using the MIRA Wind tunnel in UK by Tom Walkinshaw who you all probably know.

LOL

some funny ideas out there.

The area in front of the winscreen is a high presure area, thats why the inlets for things like your heater fans are located there. Turning the scoop round wont help at all IMHO, in fact i think you will get virtually zero airflow through the scoop, at least when pointed forward you have some ram effect to help cool the engine bay.

Stef, do you remember cadwell last year when i went on track with my bonnet catches undone on the westie? we were doing 130MPH and the bonnet stayed on, that was because the area above the bonnet in front of the screen was being pushed down and not sucking up as you would imagine.

If you install a sport bonnet you will generate more front end lift as the bonnet acts like a wing on the sport, it produces less lift on the turbo because the airflow is more disturbed. Do you really want less front end grip in the fast corners at the ring? I dont think so mate.

Leave it standard, it does a good job allround.

I think Stef doesn't want extra air in, he wants to extract hot air from the engine bay by turning the scoop around. I posted the piccies thinking that because the "Walky" gets cool air from the back of the reversed scoop, that it would be the same for Stef if he reversed his. In other words he would NOT extract, but instead take air in and would need a front type of duct to get rid of the hot air, that is, cool air coming in from the back and nowhere for the hot air to escape. On the Walky hot air comes out the front as there is a duct gill. I posted thinking Stefs idea would not work. I guess I was wrong though, as Carl pointed out the scoop on Scoobies is too far forward, missing the high pressure area.

Cool

Stef,

The Ugly Duckling WRC car has a slot in the bonnet behind the intercooler and rad that ducts the now warmer air out and over the bonnet... this allows for a smooth and constant flow of air through the cooling gear and also helps keep downforce/under bonnet air pressure factors under control.

Maybe you could get some UK company to make a mould of your bonnet and design something like the Trial (Japan) replacement bonnet to give you some of the WRC advantages?

Have you ever noticed that the raindrups on the back of the scoop hardly move when running at normal highway speeds? I even remember having a spider there when I left for work. It was still there when I arrived at work. For that reason I'm pretty sure the reversed scoob won't extract lots of hot air when driving.

If hot air is coming out of the engine bay, what is going to be replacing it? Cold air? I think so. Therefore, having the normal open forward facing scoop will help fill the engine bay with cold air, pushing hot air out, probably from underneath the engine.

When you're not moving, then convection is the most significant heat movement. And with convection, the hot air will rise out of the scoop irrespective of whether its facing forward or backward.

Looking at the problem from a styling perspective, and thinking that the q-car idea is a nice one, i think an evo style flush grille, losing the scoop completely, would be good... to a trained eye, obviously the car is quick, but most people look at a scoob for the bonnet scoop and decide if its quick based on that. Anyway, having an open flush grille would probably extract air from the engine bay by the venturi effect.

That's the answer. Leave the scoop as it is and get a pair of those 550 Maranello-style vents down the sides

I think the old style WRC used the two side vents to get rid of the hot air from the radiator / intercooler. It used a carbon fibre shield to direct all the air coming through the front of the car up through two big tubes (ducts?) either side of the engine bay and out through the vents. Have you got any contacts at Prodrive? Not sure if the original bonnet scoop was blocked off or kept for cooling though.

Thanks guys, a really great debate with some interesting points raised.
However, my decision may well be swung by this....
