The 98 UK definitely did have the smaller turbo to reduce lag and faster spool up.

So whats the best 280 model to buy? Do any of the 280 models come with 4 pots?

I like the sound of the shorter gear raitioed WRX STI imports. 275bhp with mega acceleration sounds the ticket. What years are the 280 models available on?

I think between us all we got there in the end I still think from reading the SIDC FAQ and having been in and driven several that its worth stretching to an 99 or 00 model if you can. If anything just cause they are newer and good clean low mileage examples can still be found quite easily. Before you get swept up in the import idea get an insurance quote. If you get your heart set on one and then phone up you might be in for a big disapointment!

Seriously though have a look at the FAQ ---> http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm look at section 2.1.1 it gives all the Japanese production runs and the models and PS outputs. PS is pretty close to bhp ie 280PS is 276bhp, 300PS is 295bhp. The really low geared cars are the Type R and Type RA. I have an RA and you learn to change gear very quickly .
