I may be proved totally wrong but i thought it removed it?

I had semi prodrive settings on my 00MY done by elite.

Had the BS mod at PS about a year later.......

Elite settings tidied the dynamics a bit.

When checked at PS the geometry was spot on for the prodrive settings.

Had the BS mod done and it does what is says on the tin...no more steering corrections as the front suspension compresses.

Also had rear anti-roll bar and links; both made a significant difference to the dynamics.

Cool

So much confusion

Bumpsteer is BAD, so of course PS try to remove it. Read Tune to Win, and you'll understand why (I did after reading each page about 850 times )

However, saying that the car goes from understeer into an oversteering monster is total BS IMHO.

It makes the turning in more sharp/predictable. But it does NOT eliminate power on understeer on a UK car.

You need to play with your centre diff for that (not even an ATB front diff removes understeer, although it does help a lot, just as the bumpsteer removal does.)

Sure, a good geometry will help a great deal, but it can not/will not eliminate the bumpsteer artifacts on our cars.

BuRR,

What John was saying was that PS remove the Bump Steer and this is a very good thing as Bump Steer is bad.

I have heard several people say that a good geometry setup was a noticable improvement and then removing the Bump Steer was as good again.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Indeed

Bump Steer = BAD

What is it you want steering your car, YOU or some Factory tolerence induced uncontrolable entity?

Great - we appear to have a few experts here

Million dollar question - if you had to pick three or four modifications to improve an Impreza's handling - what would they be?

- Improve the driver skills
- Reduce / remove bump steer
- Better tyres
- Bigger wheels
- Experiment with tyre pressure
- Adjust wheel alignment (toe and camber)
- Fit stiffer road springs (Eibachs?)
- Fit ajustable suspension (Leda?)
- Fit quicker steering rack
- Fit or upgrade items such as strut braces, anti-roll bar bushes, anti lift kits, diffs etc etc
- Anything else?

Please don't just say "all of the above" - I'm trying to gauge what improvements might be best for a road car to sharpen up the handling, improve grip and reduce understeer.

Sorry - I know this is like asking how long is a piece of string!

I guess it will largely depend on where your starting point is (my UK MY00 or John's Sti 5 for example) and what the drivers preference is, but hopefully you know what I mean...

Any comments?

Thanks

Rich

My cars got Anti-Lift Kit, Bump Steer, Eibachs and 17" Wheels, and the handling is phenominal!

My order would be as below

1)- Improve the driver skills, best bang for buck improvement posible, i learned a lot from Don Palmer, and i thought i was a good driver before i met him.
2)- Better tyres, Tyres are everything! 16" wheels are perfectly adequate, i would spend on tyres if the choice was wheels or tyres.
3)- Experiment with tyre pressure, set your tyre presures properly, it costs nothing!
4)- Adjust wheel alignment (toe and camber), if the suspension is out, even a skilled driver will be out of control, getting rid of the factory settings is a big step forward, they suck.
5)- Reduce / remove bump steer, the final icing on the cake for full control of the chassis

The rest are personal choice so in no particular order.

- Bigger wheels, can improve handling, but if they are heavy it will make things worse! Cheep big wheels are a bad idea!
- Fit stiffer road springs (Eibachs?), can make the car quicker in the dry but slower in the wet! It may feel faster but is it?
- Fit ajustable suspension (Leda?) How often will you adjust it and why? Do you really know what you are doing? overdamping can cause reverse jacking that will see you on the bump stops and into a hedge quickly.
- Fit quicker steering rack, very expensive, quickracks are fantastic but a bonus for road use, make life much easier on track.
- Fit or upgrade items such as strut braces, anti-roll bar bushes, anti lift kits, diffs etc etc, All help buty fine tuning really.

The biggest mistake people make is thinking stiff setups mean a fast car, absolute nonsense! In the wet or on bumpy surfaces stiff means slow. It's all about compromise, what is most important to you personally when it comes to how you use your car?

Yopu missed an important one! Brakes! Spend money on good handling mods, tyres and brakes before you spend a penny on engine mods, you will be driving a safer and much more capable car. Too many people go for power, you dont need it, ask anyone who has seen a sport driven properly.

Thanks John - just the kind of detail I was hoping for

- Adjustable suspension (Leda) - yep you're right - I wouldn't know what I was doing, and wasn't planning on doing it anyway, but I was just interested in the comments from any who'd fitted it.

- Brakes - agreed and I've upgraded mine - but I should have included them on my list above.

- Driver improvement - I've had the benefit of some of Don Palmer's instruction, but I've got a long way to go before I'd consider myself a good driver. Lots more practice required!

- Prodrive setting done. (though will need to check it again.)
- Tyres - currently using Toyo's and I like them
- Tyre pressures - more experimentation required...

That leaves the BS mod. which is planned (hence my question about Falkland earlier in this thread)

Thanks again,

Rich

My 2p's worth.

handling wise it's the best 120 quid I've ever spent. However I did get anti lift kit fitted at same time, so it's not a true comparison over just having the BS done. Even still, both of them made a very, vert noticable different to the handling. Car now grips and goes round corners! amazing!

I'm sure I've heard TSL do something like bumpsteer, but without shimming the rack, which is what PS do. not sure though. I'm sure Trouser will put me right if I'm wrong though.

M,

I think you'll find its just a very good 4 wheel lineup with out the bumpstear which needs shims.

Unless Trouser would like to tell me I'm wrong.

Different car-similar handling. My gtir used to understeer like mad on standard suspension.Went to PS and had Whiteline handling kit fitted(adjustable rear sway bar, polybushes, anti lift and anti dive)-big improvement in overall handling of car but still understeered when pushed.Recently had the BS mod done and understeer is virtually eliminated(still does it in the wet,but this may be down to tyres-SO3's on front). However, the car has if anything, too much front end grip and the tail can go light making for fun on roundabouts.Has been controllable up to now.

had the bumpsteer mod and antilift kit fitted at ps and thought it made the front more agressive over pot holes and the like and much harsher -was thinking i done wrong BUT i had the nearly worn out bridgestone re010 tyres on the car. ive just had goodyear gsd3 tyres fitted allround and guess what-its all come together now-amazing what difference tyres make.the car now cruises over pot holes and the like, its rock solid stable-no tramlining, brakes staight, and and has front end bite and no understeer.superb combination i think with the standard suspension.[uk my99 ppp] i really enjoy driving it now.in short i think the tyres were hiding the improvements of the bumpsteer/antilift mod. and now im very happy.also note that ps will alter your front and rear camber to minus 1 degree- slight negative camber- [which are fast road settings i think] to help it all along.these settings all rubish the original subaru settings as well.

while were on the subject of 4 wheel tracking.i recal a chap called mr pat thomas of kelvedon motors[i think he deals with lotuses now] near peterboro in spalding lincolnshire.he sets the car up by using weights on each corner of the car- actualy tailer made settings of your individual car-never used him but has anyone else? seems like a expensive and exact procedure[apperently it takes about 8-12 hours to set a car up!! and costs ~£40/hour. one for the track boys i think. his tel;01775725457
